Her retreat was stopped by the question, her head tilting as Clare rattled off the list of possible abilities. "Well...I could use Elemental Cards and summon Elemental Spirits back home. Do you mean something like that?"
no subject
"I had to learn transforming from scratch, it's a bit longer a process to learn that way," Clare paused, she missed something earlier in this conversation. Best to do it now, "I'm Clare, by the way."
no subject
"The cards, however, had the spells engraved on them, and could only be activated by me..." She stopped and looked at Clare. "That one might be the key. I had to transfer my mana to the card in order for it to work." So, maybe that was the key here?
no subject
"Try focusing yourself as if you were projecting your mana into a card, just... without the card," Clare continued, "Your body knows what it is here, it should direct you the rest of the way... in theory." Worst case scenario, nothing happened. Plus it could mean not trying to throw herself down the Shinbusen steps as seemed to be the favored alternative learning method.
no subject
She grew quiet, falling back on her training to relax both her mind and body. Soon her breathing slowed and no offense to Clare, Sheena was no longer aware of her presence or of anything else surrounding them as she turned her attention inward. She imagined herself as one of her cards, letting it fill with both her power and desire to change.
One of these days, though, someone was going to have to explain the whole throwing oneself down the stairs method.
no subject
"The default location for the transformation to be rooted to is the heart, and if you feel warmth from whatever you're doing, that means it's working," Clare pulled out her notebook and flipped to one of the earliest pages. "Yes, warmth, chest, heart. That's the best starting point, unless there's somewhere more meaningful for your 'spell' to be hidden. Which should be the next thing to try."
no subject
Her eyes snapped open. "The heart?" She placed her hand over her heart, feeling its beat under her fingertips. Could it really be that simple? She had been told by her grandfather that in order to fight, everything--mind, body, and soul--had to be in sync.
Was that the resonance Gai had told her about?
no subject
"Now, just give it a try," Clare looked very optimistic, hope was one of those things Clare always lost, but even more surely she always found some of it after. Like right here, "Even if you don't transform fully, it's a step down the path. Or... sorry, I'm not used to making up teacher metaphors."
no subject
Sheena had been trying, but with that information about the heart, she had a clearer idea of what to do. She gave the other woman a smile. "I think you're doing a good job, Clare." She took a deep breath and tried again, going into a trance-like meditative state, using the beating of her heart as a guide.
Despite her eagerness to change, she didn't force it, trusting her soul to know when it was right--almost like knowing the correct moment to attack an enemy. She could feel what could only be described as a liquid warmth flowing through her, and her hands fingertips began to tingle.
Unknown to her, her hands had started to change, turning black and transforming into a braided cord like the one around her waist.
[ooc: That was weird. I replied to your comment, but it posted in the main thread.]

Clare tinted a bit pinker than before at the kind words, and went to flipping through her notes for anything else she wrote back when she first arrived. The five month stint back home was an added weight to remembering her notations clearly. Which, thankfully, is why you keep notes.
But she didn't need them as Sheena was doing very well her first time out, lacking Clare's own failure at relaxing or focusing. Hmm... her form was something she was wearing, that's interesting. Clare pocketed that journal and started writing small notes in her mirror instead. Sheena's transformation is not her's to write about privately, that's just... creepy.
But Clare didn't interrupt, let the girl keep going for now. No point telling her she did it to have the words break her concentration. "Whatever power you're grasping for, cradle it, protectively but gently like it was an egg or made of thin glass," still, couldn't hurt to give a few directions. So long as her voice stays cool and soothing, given the vaguely meditative look on Sheena's face being loud would be counter-productive.
[OOC: Weird... DW why u no work right?]
no subject
Meditation was part of being a ninja, so it was easy for Sheena to follow her seldom-used training, letting that liquid warmth continue to build and flow through her. The tingling, however, was a bit alarming, and she almost stopped when Clare's soft voice penetrated.
Did that mean she was succeeding? Sheena certainly took it that way, since Clare didn't seem to be telling her to stop. And the power she was grasping for? Her own desire to protect others, fueled by a promise she had made. A promise she refused to break. At that thought, the tingling grew stronger, almost numbing, but Sheena wasn't about to stop now.
Clare would begin to notice clusters of colored thread--red, orange, green, medium blue, pale blue, and violet--among the black, which would begin to fade as Sheena began to tire from the effort.
Maybe she should have done this instead of physical training first.
no subject
Clare waited for Sheena to come out of it and watch to make sure that letting go turned Sheena back to normal. Bakura had gotten stuck before, and Clare often found when quick changing she couldn't shift back as quickly if she was out of practice or overtaxing herself. "I can tell you what your weapon form is, and that you're on the right track."
That wasn't the end of Clare's thoughts, there was definitely more to it, "But I think you need to take it a little slower. You started to lose your progress toward the end, you might need to work on your... spiritual flexibility, I don't have a better metaphor."
no subject
She looked down at herself, making sure that everything was okay. The tingling was still there, but it was more like what happens when you stub your toe or hit your finger and was fading away just as quickly.
"Towards the end, I felt...I'm not sure how to put it... Everything had been growing steadily--the warmth, the tingling, then suddenly, it just seemed to rush forward and all of a sudden, I felt exhausted." She looked up as some of Clare's words registered.
"You know my form? What is it?" she asked eagerly.
no subject
Clare thought about how to better explain resonance, wavelength, and partnership. Because she found while she easily made resonance happen, like she easily shifted her form. It was never strong, that was her stumbling block. Of course Clare instantly dismissed the guitar-amp metaphor, "You're... used to a certain form for yourself, I guess. You pushed yourself into a new form, but you had to keep the pressure on yourself as your soul and body didn't want to change. Thus the drag and your transformation reversed itself. ...I can't be certain, I don't have Soul Perception so I couldn't see. Just observe how you were acting."
"As for your weapon form, you're wearing it," Clare pointed at the belt Sheena had on. "Your hand and arm shifted into something along the lines of that when you changed. Your abilities will probably be something you already are capable of, at least when you were back home." Clare was trying to find the right balance between wild speculation and logical deduction. The method and madness of this place was a tricky thing, so it was hard to define anything as 'truth' until you do something with it. "Take a break, try again when you're not as taxed."
no subject
She leaned back on to her hands to relax and gather her strength. She wasn't about to try to change again that day, but she did close her eyes to try to remember what she had done and what she had felt while she had been doing it. She nodded along with Clare's explanation. "That makes sense."
It took her a moment to realize what Clare was telling her about her form. She looked down then turned to the other woman slowly. "I'm an Obijime? Why in the name of Martel would that be my shape?" She paused. "Please tell me it eventually makes sense."
no subject
"As for what that form is, I'm a shield. I defend and protect my Meister and others. I can do offense but it is very limited," Clare's hand went up and her forearm flashed white, the back of her arm replaced with a single gleaming metal plate. "Partial transformations let me use my shield as a bracer, letting me defend myself a bit better. But I'm not skilled enough at combat to make it work for me against real opponents."
"Your form isn't always conventional, and some of the less conventional forms have more devastating powers," Clare tried to think of an example but most of the weapons she knew were rather standard. "I know one person who turns into a small computer, one guy here turns into a ten sided die... but all weapons do things. I can remove my meister's scent and sound from anyone nearby, a little stealth trick. Your form is something to you, and your abilities will reflect who you are."
Clare grinned and turned to look at Sheena, "In other words your form is your own making, somehow. Maybe it'll make sense to you one day."
no subject
She looked at Clare with a new appreciation. Someone who would, without thought, defend another--especially a child--at the risk of their own life was worth knowing in the ninja's eyes. How ironic that she wasn't a shield, Sheena thought to herself, considering her history. Watching Clare partially change her arm, she gave her a bit of advice. "The key is to always remain as calm as possible and try to watch your opponent at all times. The movement of their hands and feet can give you the best clues about what they're planning." She didn't know if Clare had ever been shown that, but it was always sound advice.
Her eyebrow raised in agreement to Clare's assessment. "Less conventional is right," Sheena chuckled. "I'm a braided cord." She paused as she mulled things over. "But something to me? Up until know, I always thought my Obijime was nothing more than a piece of clothing. Well, depending on who my Meister is, he or she can be stylish with me around their waist," she joked. "And if they don't wear an obi, I can be used as a hair-tie!" Silly right? Not at all anything like the techniques she was taught on how to hide and sneak up on people. Nope. No stealth abilities there.
"My own making?" She looked down at her own attire before glancing back at the other woman. "I guess so. At least I didn't pick this," she said, holding up the end of her pink obi. "I don't think I could handle being a huge bow over someone's behind."
[ooc: BTW, love the technique for your icons. :D]
no subject
Clare chuckled a little, comparing the troubles each side had. Learning new tricks versus learning any tricks. Clare might be at a bit of an edge starting from scratch. Is... that why BREW took her? "I'll keep that in mind. I'm getting better at defending myself. But since blocking blows is effective with metal skin, it won't serve me without my powers. It's the fighting back bit I'm really bad at."
"We're different types of weapons." Clare considered what best would explain the idea, "You'll be about what you do, me about what I am. Even without my abilities, I am a shield. When I transform I'm always converting soul into a defense wave. What you do we can't be sure of yet, but you do something. We'll find it eventually." Clare put a comforting hand on Sheena's shoulder, Clare was nothing but empathetic about not being of use yet. She wasn't useful yet, and she could transform.
Clare laughed, "I think they would rather wear you as a shoulder sash in that case. But a few Meisters here might find a giant bow very stylish." Not everyone in Death City understood fashion, and some outright defied it.
[ooc: I'm at 700+ icons for Clare, and I still have four more eps to icon from this season. I kinda have to. ^_^]
no subject
She turned away from that thought and focused on what Clare was saying. Despite her original hesitancy in asking for help, Sheena was glad she did. This was one thing she probably would never have figured out for herself. And even with the other woman's assistance, she was still going to have trouble wrapping her mind around her Weapon form--she could tell.
Listening to Clare, she agreed. "Yeah, I can see where having a metal arm can help with blocking. But if you're a shield, not only can you push the enemy away, but you can be used in striking and slashing motions, too." Lifting her hand palm out, she kept it flat as she demonstrated, pushing against the air, then delivering a uppercut with the tips of her fingers, then slashing down. Chuckling, she said, "The blows would probably hurt more coming from metal than my fingertips."
She looked at Clare with a soft smile. "You defend Clare. You protect a life. And to me, that's pretty useful--no matter how you do it." Which could probably also be said about her own form, and if she never found out her ability--at least she knew she could still be used to help others.
She stared at the other woman for a minute. "I think I'd prefer the sash over being a huge bow. Wouldn't you?" She hadn't seen everyone yet, but she had seen some fashion mistakes she didn't want to be a part of.
[ooc: I wish I had thought of that, sooner. I had cut my icon collection down because of the limits. But, you've given me a great idea. :D]
no subject
Clare laughed, admiring the effort but finding it misplaced. "I didn't mean I wasn't useful, I know how useful a shield can be. Just once you figure out your abilities you're be more destructive than I am. ...Probably." She couldn't actually be sure, but what she knew about the city it was a pretty good shot. Forms and abilities are built on who you are as much as anything else. And Clare... was never a fighter, Sheena was and in the end that would probably make the difference.
"Oh, I would definitely prefer the sash over the large bow, but someone I knew at home could probably make a large bow work with the right outfit," Clare's smile was a little fragile as she mentioned this person. Something Clare didn't feel like going into, but she couldn't help but bring up.
(OOC: Glad I could help. ^_^ )
no subject
Sheena's eyes narrowed slightly at the laughter. She didn't like being laughed at--especially when she was being sincere--and Clare's rubbed her the wrong way. Until she learned why she was laughing, then she relaxed and smiled. "Oh. I think I get it. Because I'm used to fighting, right? I'm also used to using my whole body as a shield, too. This could get interesting, since I doubt a cord can offer much protection.
Her head tilted at Clare's response, and she suddenly became concerned for this woman she just met. "Are you okay, Clare?"
no subject
Clare quickly tried to shake off her thoughts with a very fake smile, she didn't want to get into things she couldn't fix, "Old Ghosts, nothing that you need to worry about. I'm fine."
no subject
"That's right," she finally said. "You mentioned that you could hide your Meister's presence from enemies." Sheena was trained in stealth and using illusions for diversions. Now, she was beginning to look forward to finding out just what she could do.
The young ninja shook her head slightly, still wearing a soft smile. "Those Old Ghosts pop up at the strangest times, don't they?' she asked softly, her voice full of understanding.
no subject
"Yup, but it doesn't make them invisible so it's not exactly great," Clare wasn't entirely sure what was going on with her abilities. They towed a very fine line between vaguely familiar and completely foreign. "I think I sorta convert standard destructive wavelengths into other forms." Power in this world was a soul, and that power was almost always used to destroy or injure. Either the Kishin attacking, the Witches' magic, or a Meister's combat. Clare defended and concealed, but both clearly took energy. As with them her offense was limited to that of any standard non-living weapon.
"Strange and unhelpful timing, guess everyone has a few," it was sad that this was on Clare's short list of things constant between everyone. That as she tried to understand everyone, and get everyone to understand her... old wounds was what they all shared.
