[Open] Morning Training! - February 16th

Description: Every morning in the city, Morning Training takes place to prepare the guests of the city for the war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on February 16th.

I was curious about the sword you have.

[Kenshin touches the grass in front of him, an acknowledgment of her request to kneel. He's growing accustomed to inquiries about his sword: first in Meiji Japan, where they're outlawed, and then in Death City, where only a few carry non-human weapons. He offers it to her, sheathed and hilt-first]

It isn't worth much as a sword, for most.

[Nodding her thanks, she kneels before him, and bows slightly before taking the weapon. Probably surprisingly, she holds the sword with ease and examines it while still sheathed.]

It seems to be well-made and well-balanced to me. Is it the weight? I know people prefer heavier ones.

You know your swords. [his smile grows. he's had to stop being surprised at women's knowing weaponry. kaoru and misao had been unusual for meiji japan, but he's been in death city long enough to understand the different circumstances] Not the weight. The blade.

My Grandfather taught me how to use one. [She returns his smile easily. The sword is actually one of several weapons she's been trained to use.].

The blade? Is it made from something other than metal? [She's seen a few like that on her world, and she continues weighing it, trying to determine the material.] Oh, my name's Sheena Fujibayashi, by the way.

I'm Kenshin Himura. Pleasure to meet you, Sheena-dono.

[he shakes his head]

It's metal, but it's a sakabatou, a reverse-bladed sword. One can't kill with it. You may draw it, if you like.

[Smiling, she shakes her head.]

Nice to meet you, too, but there's no need to be formal with me. You can just call me Sheena. [It's bad enough at home being called "Chief".]

A reverse blade? I've never heard of that. [Thanking him, she bows slightly before drawing the blade far enough to see what he means. She studies it for a moment, contemplating the significance.]

This blade isn't designed to kill, is it?

I have no intention to kill anyone, that I do not, so it allows me to fight without holding back. I was lucky that there was a smith willing to forge it when I arrived here since my own was left behind.

But why not have both edges dull, then? [She's just curious, not criticizing. She uses cards, so she has no room to talk.]

I bet that smith was eager to try something new.

Balance. [not weight—philosophy] Both sides of a katana are not sharp, either, that they are not. Both sharp and dull edges are essential to the dualism of nihontou, for the best kind of sword.

Oh, you mean the positive and the negative, right? [Were they reversed like the blade on his sword? The dull positive-strong, and the sharp negative-weak?]

Precisely. ♥ Though swordlore has never been my strongest area...

I see. [She sheathes the unusual sword and holds it out to him.]

It takes a lot more strength to not kill someone than people realize, doesn't it?

[She's not insulting his weapon. Sometimes people need a visual reassurance of that particular vow, since words can be just that--words.]

[he's surprised by that and stares at her for a moment, then drops his head and quirks his lips in a smile as he takes the sword back.]

That sounds like something she would say...

[Sheena returns his stare, a look of surprise on her face. She relaxes and smiles slightly at his comment.]
