Oh, I see. Were the other girls around your age too? Head housemaid aside.

[Please excuse Hughes for all the questions. He likes learning about people.]
malandragem: (Well logistically speaking...)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-08 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they were- though two of them were older, even if not by much. We all started work at the estate around the same time- though I work most closely with the Head Housemaid than the others.

[She doesn't really mind- she's just never had anyone be this interested besides maybe Bumblebee.]
comradery: (yes yes)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-08 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see. Was she sort of like a mentor for you then? Were you going to stick with that job as long as possible?

[Good, because Hughes is a very chatty person. Yep.]
malandragem: (Please stop reading those texts aloud)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's okay with this- most people she's met here aren't.]

Yes, to both of those. It is not the most profitable of occupations but it is work- and making any amount of money is better than not making any at all.
comradery: (heh)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-10 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's very true. It's usually pretty tough to find a good, stable job, too. Did any of your other siblings work? Or were you the only breadwinner?
malandragem: (That's something I'd like to see~)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-10 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Some of the others did as well, but some are too young to help. Each of us simply does what we can. What about yourself? What did you do for work?
comradery: (sup)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-10 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Mm. [Hughes nods.] It's good to hear that you and your siblings managed all right.

Me? I was an investigator. I solved crimes for the military. Catching bad guys and stuff like that. A lot of the work was desk work though, which is really, really boring, but it's the only way to get some of the stuff done. I was mostly put on obscure cases that involved alchemy.
malandragem: (Well logistically speaking...)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-11 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
We try our best.

[She perks right up when she hears what he does though, interest evident in her expression.]

I have never heard of someone solving crimes for the military. Is it much different from solving crimes for the police? [A beat, and then hesitantly-] Alchemy?
comradery: (yo)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-12 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't suppose it is. In my world—well, the country I lived in in the world I'm from—we didn't have a police or something like that. Everything was maintained by the military. So, in a way, it's kind of like what the police does except we're the military. At least, that's how I see it.

Oh, right, alchemy... Mmm. I guess you could say it was kind of like magic or something? But basically it was the ability to manipulate elements at an atomic level. So like...for example, if you ripped a piece of paper in half, you could reconnect it again by using alchemy to restructure the atoms along the edges of the cut so that it is reconnected and not torn apart anymore. Does that make sense?
malandragem: (Well logistically speaking...)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-13 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, so I suppose you technically are the police then, in a way... Well, that is still interesting; there are many militant states in South America- the continent I am from- where the Military is in charge of day to day things.

[Never mind the fact that those places usually aren't the best to live in.]

Ah, so it is somewhat like being able to rearrange and connect the atoms of something in order to change them? Or, return them to the way they were, so to speak? That sounds incredible.
comradery: (guess what)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-14 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Oh? I suppose the concept isn't unfamiliar then, huh. Is that good or bad though? I have to wonder. It could easily get out of control, after all. From my understanding at least.

Yeah! You can separate stuff too. So like...if you had water, you could separate it into hydrogen and oxygen separately. Or you could also create alcohol or form ozone. It's really up to how you use it. A lot of alchemists tend to prefer a style or specialization to focus their skills on.
malandragem: (That's something I'd like to see~)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been known to, in some areas. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

I see- what sort of things do people generally choose to specialize in?
comradery: (yes yes)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Politics is a pain in the butt. [A professional opinion there.]

Some people like focusing on a particular element or compound. Other people focus on manipulation and technique. There are also people that learn it just to use it as entertainment. There's really a lot of different ways to specialize.
malandragem: (That's something I'd like to see~)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It certainly does seem to be, from what I have seen of it.

[Also dangerous, in some cases.]

So really it all depends on the person with the ability what they choose to do with it?
comradery: (sup)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

[Hughes nods at the question.] Basically. People's preferences tend to be a big influence in that.
malandragem: (That's something I'd like to see~)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-15 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you have a particular specialty, Mister Hughes?
comradery: (no)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-07-24 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Not in alchemy, I'm afraid, hahaha. I never really got into it. Though I know the rules and basics about it, I wasn't that interested in having it in my own skill set. I prefer keeping all my abilities physically in my control rather than relying on something that's not entirely tangible.
malandragem: (Well logistically speaking...)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-07-31 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I see- well, I cannot say I find fault with such a decision- it is really quite sensible.
comradery: (yo)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-08-08 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Glad you agree. I ended up specializing in standard close quarters combat, which I tend to prefer anyway. Alchemy fights are pretty unpredictable in comparison, honestly. Not as stable of a situation to deal with.
malandragem: (That's something I'd like to see~)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-08-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I can see how that would make things more difficult than they would need to be, yes.

Although...Close combat? Do you have a weapon style you prefer?
comradery: (come again?)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-08-10 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I typically use handguns, but I do favor throwing knives. They're pretty handy in tight spots, and my aim with throwing them is top notch. [Especially since he kept them hidden.]
malandragem: (So about that compensation...)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-08-12 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I know some people back home who use handguns in combat- unfortunately, I do not yet have the aim for it, though I have been doing my best to learn.

[That doesn't mean, however, that she doesn't have something to use regardless.]
comradery: (guess what)

[personal profile] comradery 2012-08-16 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? Not a handgun person, eh? What do you usually use for combat then? [Not that he assumed young people her age would normally be wielding firearms in the first place, however, she did not seem to detest it as much as most of the other people he knew and clearly had no problems talking about it openly.]
malandragem: (That's something I'd like to see~)

[personal profile] malandragem 2012-08-18 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
[She doesn't actually like using guns if she doesn't have to- but she won't deny that they're at least a useful deterrent, usually.]

I generally try not to use weapons unless I must, but when I do, I use shotguns, usually- though they are different from usual models...

[personal profile] comradery 2012-08-25 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, not using weapons except when necessary is definitely a policy worth following, I'd say. A shotgun? [Woah, that is surprising.] You're capable of handling the recoil?

[Considering how small she is, that must mean she has a lot of upper body strength. How does a young girl learn to wield such a weapon though?]
