HEY i'm one of those!
but today, though he shows up a little later than normal, the old eliatrope's in high spirits, looking as if he's shed a few hundred years. he greets itou amicably, positively beaming.]
Aah-- please forgive me, Itou. You know I don't make a habit of being tardy.
No you aren't
[Here, have your short wooden sword.]
>:(
he accepts the weapon, which has grown rather familiar in the past few weeks. not quite like an old friend, rather more like a second-least-favorite aunt who visits far too often. but it's fine. though he's made it very clear through his constant (false) reminders that he's not much of a fighter... he's quite up for a spar today.]
Good or bad, I find it has little effect on my swordsmanship. [le smile. it's almost... cheeky.] That being said-- perhaps I am feeling lucky today.
>: )
[Although so far, Itou doesn't seem to have any judgments for or against Qilby's swordsmanship. He's aware that the man's something of a beginner, and Itou sort of is right now, too. As far as he can tell, their progress is fairly quick given the disadvantages they have in number of limbs.
Still, it's healthy to be wary. The only people he can trust here are the members of the Shinsengumi and Megumi. So while he doesn't have any animosity against Qilby, he watches his back.]
[Itou steps back a proper distance, since where they are is a good place as any.]
no subject
he doesn't resent the other man, though. on the contrary, he's quite glad he managed to dupe someone into teaching him all this crap! the aches and bruises will be worth it later -- "it'll be worth it later" is an ostensibly-comforting sentiment he's very well acquainted with.]
A warm-up, as you say. [qilby waits until there's adequate space between the two of them then, meeting the other's eyes, flashes a quick smile before taking up a rough approximation of a fencing stance.
a second later, he seizes the first strike: a light, testing jab at itou's torso.]
no subject
[He deflects that lightly with his own practice sword, thumb up and blade down as he's learned is easier for defense. However, that's a clear sign that he's not going to move in for an attack any time soon. Take your time, Qilby.]
no subject
qilby had always been an aggressive fighter (when he had the force to back up that aggression) so this poking and prodding simply makes him weary. it's so much more fun to have your opponent on the run -- which itou certainly is not -- and so, frowning, he makes his next thrust a bolder one, advancing forward a step.
time is the one thing he has a lot of, but if the other man won't attack, qilby'll just have to insist on it. keep things moving.]
no subject
no subject
qilby responds to the shortened distance between them by jumping back. it's an awkward sort of movement -- considering he has to keep his right side forward -- but with no apparent fear of attack, he soon follows through with a swing angled downward at his opponent's legs. he puts perhaps a bit too much of himself into it, but it's been an admittedly tough transition from a large scythe to a dinky little stick.]
no subject
[It's always bad to outbalance yourself, Qilby. Itou steps backward, going low -- and instead of deflecting the stick back, he hooks it using the angle between his blade and handguard in the same direction it was already going at in the first place. He doesn't pull it hard enough to cause a stumble, but the intention is to pin the weapon down long enough to make a point: Some reach is never worth the disadvantage in balance. And then he lets it go just as quickly, in case Qilby pulls a strike up and Itou certainly doesn't want to get hit by that.]
no subject
balance had never before been an issue for someone who simply danced around the rules of spatial relationships; it's been strange, having to think about these things in battle. it's a good thing itou pulls back, as qilby does follow through with a swing and a miss.
but the lesson's learned, however begrudgingly, and so he doesn't chase it down with a second swing. instead, he hangs back, blade up in a ready position.]
no subject
Itou flips the short sword in his hand in a more traditional hold and advances. There's no attack forthcoming yet from him.]
no subject
jaw set, qilby forsakes defense once more (to his credit, he lasted more than five seconds that time) and opts to meet the other man's advance with a harsh, overhead slash. he'll give him a reason to be unbalanced. it'd be so much easier -- so much more entertaining -- if he could pull off a trick or two to mix things up, but kings were supposed to fight with honor...]
no subject
Oh, no, Itou doesn't give two shits about honor when it comes to battling. He's a samurai of the highest rank, but in a war, one of the first things he learned was that refusing to be underhanded once in a while means death. In a foreign world, that's probably even more of a fact.]
[So when Qilby raises his arms like that, he ducks and steps in, and promptly applies an elbow onto gut. He moves quickly, but not fast enough that Qilby can't dodge or retaliate.]
no subject
he stifles a groan and brings his arm (still awkwardly gripping his weapon) to reflexively cradle his middle. but he's not forgotten he's still in a fight and -- seeing how itou was so kind to duck down for him -- brings his knee up in retaliation.]
no subject
no subject
it's certainly not entirely his strike that's landed itou down there and so he quickly anticipates the sweep. leaping straight up, long legs bent under him, he avoids the trip and brings his sword down on his descent. he even allows himself a little self-indulgent grin -- he'd always preferred his enemies on the ground.]
