Description: Every morning in the city, Morning Training takes place to prepare the guests of the city for the war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on February 25th.

[She slipped her own coat off, folding it and setting it neatly on the ground.]

[He nodded and stooped, lowering his hands as a makeshift step. He'd straighten and boost her up once she was in position.]

[Naoto has to examine his position before understanding what she has to do. Stepping onto his hand, holding on when he boosts her up, and grabs the first branch to climb off quickly]

Now then, show me what you can do.

[He dusted off his hands and watched as she effortlessly perched. And now it was apparently his turn.]

Oh. Uh...

[Oh, there was one! He shifted a step and made a jump to grab it. He swung a foot to press against the tree trunk for leverage as he pulled himself up with an arm, just enough that he could loop a leg around that branch. It was a really sloppy way of getting on a branch, but it was all he had.]

[pishirogane]

[She watched, finding it somewhat amusing how sloppily he pulled himself onto the branch. Once he was settled, she nodded]

You have to take it slowly. You have to begin by finding the branch you want to reach and examining your routes to take. [There's a high branch she has her eyes on. She brings her attention down, finding a nearby branch she can reach to pull herself up higher]

When you're ready for the next branch, stabilize yourself against the tree itself and go for it. Try to avoid the ones that require you to lean too far.

[Naoto demonstrates, climbing up to her next branch with each step she just explained]

[He brought his legs around to sit on the branch instead of straddling it like an idiot as he listened. Now that he thought about it, it wouldn't be long before he'd climbed higher than he'd ever gone in a tree.]

Okay.

[Hell yeah he was ready! Bring it on, branches! He checked for a route and found another that looked sturdy. After working to bring himself upright, hanging on to the trunk for stability, found a foothold and slowly made his ascent.]

Shit, how dumb would that be, goin' home with a broken--

[Snap! Bad foothold! Bad foothold! Kanji hugged the trunk and took a moment to find new footing, before pulling himself up just a little higher. He'll need a minute to keep his heart from leaping out of his throat...]

[pishirogane]

[... As he was saying, with a broken rib she believed? Maybe an arm? It happens, but that snapped startled her a bit too.]

[She gave him a few seconds to a minute before asking]

Are you ready for the next one?

[topgun_textiles]

Sorry! [Okay, heart, settle down... there. That's better.]

[But when asked, he nodded.]

's easier to get down than goin' up, right...?

[Naoto rose and climbed up to the next branch.]

It generally is.

[He had to be a little extra careful. Weighing nearly twice as much as the detective, some branches wouldn't take too well as they would should she use them. Okay, that one looks good, but he had to reach a little.]

I think this next one's gonna break my record...

[Hmm, but he had to get another foothold, this branch sagged a little under his shoes. Maybe that knot in the trunk would do. He'd test it first, pushing himself up before making a grab for it, and he just barely managed, pulling up. Kanji looked up. She was more like a cat in a tree...]

[...But he was more like a dog. He was a little grumpy as he saw a few ants easily making their way up the trunk. Showoffs.]

[pishirogane]

[Naoto remained perched on her branch, watching Kanji make his way up. He wasn't exactly graceful, but he was doing fine making it from branch to branch. He just needed to be slow and steady.]

Try not to misjudge a branch. I have a feeling this one hasn't been properly pruned so there may be a few mixed branches in here that are considerably weak.

[Kanji developed a system, giving a branch a test tug to see if it's sturdy before he'd pull himself up.]

Got it! Man, this is a helluva lot easier than I thought it'd be...

[A mild lie as he checked out the next ones he had to deal with. Those didn't look sturdy at all on his side. He sought a foothold and shifted sides.]

[Soon he was pulling himself to her level, though he had hold of another branch, leg hooked on another entirely.]

Sup.

[A somewhat breathless greeting and a little grin. He'd be pro at this in no time.]

[pishirogane]

[She doesn't move, watching him systematically haul himself up branch by branch. Ah, now he's testing them. Very good]

[When he reaches her level, she smiles]

You're improving. Do you want to climb higher or is this far enough?

[topgun_textiles]

[He laughed a little.]

Hell no! Let's hit the top!

[pishirogane]

[She chuckled lightly]

Very well. Follow me... [And she headed up to the next branch]

[Ghk-- God, she was cute. A nod, and he sought a new foothold a little higher up before he resumed that slow but steady system. Tree, you were getting conquered!]

You usually hit the trees since you got here, or was it just back home?

[He watched a bird make a hasty getaway when he reached its level, angrily twittering at the intrusion. Well screw you, bird.]

[pishirogane]

[She paused a branch or two higher than him]

No. Just at home, but it's been some time.

[Ah, angry bird. Is there a nest nearby?]

[Oh, whoops, there was. Kanji had to stop and check out those three babies nestled at the end of one of the branches, cute and yet ugly as hell at the same time. He knew better than to touch the nest, however.]

[He didn't want to deal with the angry mom (dad?), either, so he decided to keep on climbing, giving that branch a wide berth as he heard a lecture in bird-language not too far away.]

Tch... we had nesting birds at the shop for a couple years in a row. They'd dive-bomb anybody that tried to come in. I gotta admit, they got balls.

[pishirogane]

It's not like they're purposely attempting to prevent you from receiving customers. The loft at your house would be a secure location from potential predators.

[Fortunately, everyone around there seems to feed the stray cats too. She climbs up to the next branch and waits.]

Well yeah, but some'a the regulars started to bitch, so I was always sent out to go borrow a ladder from the Konishis to go 'shoo 'em away'.

[He went quiet for a moment as he caught up with her. This was gonna sound so dumb...]

I, uh... didn't. I mean, the babies are big enough to fly away in a month anyway, so I just kinda left bread n' stuff out for the parents. I figured maybe they wouldn't be so pissed off if they were fed, y'know?

[pishirogane]

I see...

[She nods. From getting to know Kanji, he didn't seem like the kind of person capable of chasing off a nested family of birds.]

Well, they wouldn't perceive you as a threat like that. I can't say the same for your customers.

[topgun_textiles]

That's the weird thing! The second year they came around, they didn't dive-bomb me.

[He blinked down at that nest.]

I think somewhere in those bird brains, they remembered me.

[pishirogane]

[She climbs up to another branch]

It's possible. For example, a crow has been known to recognize individual human faces and be capable of holding a grudge if you cross them.

Damn... that's kinda cool! Well, I ain't gonna go pissin' off crows, then.

[Hmm, the branches were getting a little thinner. She could probably go a lot higher than he could... he had a feeling he'd just break the branches near the top.]

[It was also rather eerily quiet, the murmurs of departing Guests a dull roar.]

A wise decision.

[Hopefully, Kanji never considered pissing one off.]

[She stops at another branch, glancing up]

This is far enough without risking extensive bodily harm.
