[ It doesn't take Duo very long to spot Qilby, even in the crowd, and he makes his way over, picking a path through all the people. Morning training wasn't particularly the worst thing he's ever attended, but at the same time, shooting and physical training were things he was pretty much used to doing himself, and so he'd pretty much only been looking forward to this training session of sorts with the other man.
He waves as he approaches, grinning. ]
Hey, Qilby!
no subject
when he recognizes the young man, however, any trace of chagrin at being interrupted vanishes (from his face, at least) and he shuts his book and sets it respectfully aside before getting to his feet.]
Aah, Duo. Good morning. [a pleasant smile, one which should be pretty familiar by now.] Forgive me for not seeking you out earlier... I'm afraid I got caught up in some training of my own. But it's as good thing you're here -- I could use a bit of calm, after that.
no subject
Sorry to interrupt your reading.. [ The teenager approaches close enough to not seem as though he's standing awkwardly far away, hands tucked in his jean pockets. To say he was a little nervous about trying this whole focusing and meditating thing is an understatement. It's a natural gundam pilot thing to not like to fail. ]
It's fine, I was at the shooting range and getting some exercise in. Hopefully it wasn't too bad for you, though?
no subject
but another part of him's curious to get to know the boy with his tales of space and wars among the stars, so it's not as bad as all that.] And no-- quite the contrary, today's efforts have been rather fruitful for me. [he does his best to look encouraging.] Which bodes well for us.
That is... Assuming you're still interested in learning about the more spiritual side of things?
no subject
Well that's good news! For a second there I thought things hadn't gone so well.. [ Another slightly nervous laugh, but he seems put enough at ease. He's still not quite thrilled about trying this, considering his stunning failures at this a long time ago, but he gives a nod anyway. ]
Yeah... Let's see if I can manage it this time, eh?
no subject
As you might imagine, meditation is best done away from the sight and sound of several dozens of people sparring and whatnot.
[the grounds are quite large, however, and a nearby sunny clearing in a copse of trees is quiet enough for their purposes. the old eliatrope takes a seat right on the grass, crossing his long legs and resting his good hand on one knee.] There. A far better place to clear one's mind.
[he smiles as he waits for the boy to pull up a patch of grass of his own.] I assume you've heard that mantra Shibusen's constantly repeating to its students?
no subject
[ He follows after, pushing aside the thought that he wasn't quite sure how this might go. Now wasn't the time for doubts, at least that's what he told himself as he followed after him, looking around at the scenery. Earth scenery was a lot different than the planned lay out of colonies, and he was still getting used to this whole 'in the desert on Earth' thing. ]
Yeah, I'm pretty distracted just by little noises, so.. [ More like jumpy, but he wasn't about to tell Qilby all about his issues of forgetting 'soldier' for a little while. He takes a seat across from him, legs criss-crossed and elbows rested on his knees. ]
Mmhmm. I've been trying to absorb as much about this place as I can, but there's just.. a whole lot to absorb, you know?
no subject
But for now, I'd like you to forget all about absorption of any kind. Hear my words, but don't don't cling to them. Meditation is ultimately about clearing your mind -- although you'll need my instruction, it'll end up distracting you if you lean on it.
And, speaking of leaning-- [the corner of his mouth twitches, despite his effort to not smile.] --you'll want to sit up straight.
no subject
Eh I think it more depends on how receptive you are, than your age or anything like that. Even people my age can be closed off and .. not so good at learning because of it. [ But, there again comes that almost oddly sinking feeling at trying this whole meditation thing, even though he knows he can do it if he puts his mind to it it's still... well he's never really been good at it before. A classic teenager, though, he seems a bit surprised about the comment on his posture, but he shapes up anyway, sitting straight like a solider. ]
Alright. What's up next, then?
no subject
[he nods in approval at the improved posture, though! keep slouching the way you were before and you'll have back problems before you're thirty! take a hint from the ten thousand year old space... dragon king, here.]
What's next is relaxation. Start with your shoulders-- [and even as he speaks, his own shoulders drop] --and work your way down your body. Large muscles to small muscles, your arms to your fingers. Adjust your posture if you need to. Keep searching for even the most inconsequential muscles you didn't even know you had and concentrate on relaxing them.
[his eyes are closed. it seems easy for him; he looks the sort of person who's just naturally relaxed. or tired. but even so--] This early in the morning you may find it tempting to fall asleep. I advise against it.
no subject
[ What is it with Duo and attracting Dragons? Regardless, Duo's had his own lessons about sitting up straight while Father Maxwell and Sister Helen were trying to teach him things, so he's no stranger to having to improve his posture. He's bound to have joint problems anyway, at this point, but he doesn't really want to think about the levels of arthritis he'll develop just yet.
Still, as he tries to follow Qilby's instructions he can't help but give a little frown. ]
How the hell am I supposed to fully relax and sit straight? [ It's more muttered than anything, but, still loud enough. He's concentrating, at least, brows furrowing just a little as he attempts to do as he's told. ]
Hah - well, I am a teenager...
no subject
he's not upset, though -- on the contrary he chuckles and slumps over. it's undoubtedly the first time so far duo's seen him anything other than tall, straight, and regal.] Your spine's well-designed enough to handle yourself on its own. Properly seated, you hardly need to make an effort to sit straight.
Have you ever had to do two things that seem contradictory, before? [the talk could either distract or help the boy relax -- he'll see.]
no subject
[ He frowns a little, more at the question than his assertion that he could sit straight up while relaxed. Biologically it made sense he just... associated relaxation with slumping much more than sitting up rod straight. Has he ever done two things that seemed contradictory?
Well, that's practically his life story, Qilby. But the whole helping him relax thing isn't really what's happening, and he reminds himself to let his shoulders relax. ]
.... Yeah. I've done that a lot.
no subject
We as people, whether human or Eliatrope, live on such a small scale. You've seen the universe yourself, you must know how little we are in the grand scheme of things. While two actions may at first seem so large, may seem to contradict each other-- with time, all things become one. A field is burned down so that one may harvest from the fresher, stronger crop that grows in its place. Millions of stars die each day so that millions more may be born from their remains.
Life, death... Though opposite, it's all the same thing. [tens upon tens of thousands of years of endless, maddening cycles of birth and rebirth have taught him that much.
qilby smiles and lifts his finger, motioning vaguely at duo.] ...My extremely roundabout way of telling you that it is indeed possible to relax and sit straight at the same time. You're looking better already.
no subject
[ He can't help but crack an eye open as he listens to what Qilby is saying, thinking about his own experiences back in his world. OZ, Whitefang, Mariemaia, everything seemed so cataclysmic at the moment, in the heat of battle, but now that he looked back on it, all of them were just small pawns in a war that was much more complicated than even gundam pilots had originally thought, weren't they?
Everything was a small fish in a large pond when it came to the universe, that much he was aware, people were not but star dust that happened to have amino acids and developed - they were all dust in the jar at the end of the day. ]
Yeah, but even the smallest bit of stardust can manage to be a kink in the much larger machine if you give it the chance or time of day... [ A little shrug, though he can't help but break into a little smile as he tells him he looks like he's doing better. ]
That was a hell of a round about..
no subject
Now that's just the physical aspect of meditation -- settling your mind has been the hard part of it, I take it. [he closes his eyes, and breathes in deeply.] Hopefully you have a good imagination.
I'd like you to focus on an image that calms you. A flickering flame, perhaps. Rolling waves. [a knowing smile.] ...I find it easiest to count stars. Let nothing else intrude on your thoughts, let your breath flow naturally.
no subject
.. Well as long as you aren't an ass about it like Wufei always is.. [ But he can appreciate a joke at the cost of one's self, and he quirks a little smirk, shaking his head lightly as he laughs along with him. From one guy who can take a pot shot at himself to another - well, he's glad he managed to accidentally run in to Qilby as he had. ]
Yeah.. I tend to be running at eight thousand miles a minute in my head and it doesn't slow down just to sit and think to myself.. [ But he sighs, face screwing up for a moment in concentration before he relaxes. Counting stars, or rather, just the image of space itself, is always calming, and after a few moments he gives a little nod. ]
.. Alright.
no subject
The rest is up to you. Hold onto that image, to keep your mind from wandering. Keep breathing steadily. [a few deep breaths, as if to demonstrate.
quietly now.] When you've mastered being able to focus on one thing at a time, following that it's far easier to completely clear your mind.
[he falls silent, closing his eyes. a clean, blank mind is exactly what he doesn't want-- and he hardly bothers trying to understand why people equate it with enlightenment. knowledge was power, and he filled his head with so much of it that was nearly fit to burst. as long as he could continue to do so, there would be no need for inner calm to perish his darker thoughts. they'd simply have no room to fester.
perhaps it's a mortal quirk, empty-headedness: their lives are so short, they barely have time to experience stress of any real consequence, and so the petty comforts of meditation are a more than adequate band-aid. it never worked for qilby. he was too far beyond that. and yet, here he was -- teaching it and all its virtues to some child. story of his life, right there.]
