Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on May 18th.

I was fighting a demon. Then I lost, fell off a building and got a crane dropped on me.

That was a pretty unexpected explanation.]

That sounds... pretty horrible, actually.

[He laughs. (Although it really isn't a laughing matter.)]

I can't even remember how many bones I broke that day. And Ai got all mad about it too.

[As if this conversation couldn't be any more unsettling. Shinji thinks it's probably high-time for a topic change.]

Hey, I don't think I ever got your name...?

[Sai doesn't mind the topic change at all, because topic changes usually meant the other person had either run out of things to say or were uncomfortable with the topic. And he liked it when other people were uncomfortable.

He tilts his head, still friendly.]

I'm Sai.

[Well, Sai has definitely hit the uncomfortable vein for Shinji, so that's a point in his favor.]

I'm Shinji. Ikari Shinji.

[He'd get a 'nice to meet you' if it wasn't for the fact that he's not entirely convinced that it would be truthful.]

[Sai takes the fact that Shinji didn't even react to his name as an indication that no one has warned him not to associate with someone named Sai yet. Silly people.]

Ikari Shinji. It's nice to meet you. [And when Sai says it, he's being very, very truthful. Meeting anyone new and potentially interesting was always nice.]

[There hasn't been a single warning, nope. He really has no idea what he might be getting in to, here.]

Likewise. [A little less honest and a little more begrudgingly polite, but he at least tries to keep the sentiment from sounding forced.]

[It doesn't bother Sai. Although people who had been warned beforehand were fun to chase when they ran, there was something refreshing about someone who hadn't been warned at all.

The topic change from before is already a good enough indication that Shinji was uncomfortable. And when someone was making you uncomfortable, Sai was sure that you wouldn't actually feel that it was 'nice' to meet them. But he doesn't give any indication that he's noticed. He just tilts his head and smiles.]

[And with that, it looked like Shinji was going to have to steer the conversation a little more. Maybe away from the whole 'broken bones' and whatnot that had made this encounter particularly uncomfortable.]

So, how long have you been here, anyway...?

[This whole encounter was probably destined to be uncomfortable from the get-go.]

I've been here since February. But...you haven't. Right?

[That sounds about right.]

Yeah, I've only been here for about a month.

And you haven't been on the Network very much, have you?

I've looked at it a bit. [More than just 'a bit', actually. It was something to do to pass the time when he didn't feel like leaving his apartment.] I haven't really posted to it, though.

Well, you should. It's a good way of making friends. [Or to figure out who was friends with your friends. Although in Sai's case he's definitely not using the term 'friends' the way it ought to be used.]

I've... been told as much. It just really isn't the kind of thing I'm very good with.

Not good with the technology? Or just not good at making friends?

[Admittedly, Sai is also not very good at that. People that used to hang around him tend to either want to use him or to worship him.]

[He hesitates for a moment. He wasn't expecting to have his statement questioned, and it's a little embarrassing to admit to someone he's only just met when the conversation has been so awkward already, but...]

The second part. I... wasn't very well liked back home.

[It wasn't that Sai particularly cared or that he wanted to be sympathetic. He was just curious and he liked having his curiosity satisfied.]

Why? What was wrong with you?

[Wow, as if there weren't enough excuses for Shinji to not want to go into too much detail about his home world, that particular phrasing isn't about to change his mind.]

People just... Had their reasons. [He can come up with plenty of valid examples for not being liked, but if Sai wants to find any of them out, he's going to have to try a little harder than that.]

You killed someone? Lots of them? Or maybe your personality was just unlikeable? You were creepy? Dissected animals for fun? Killed your grandmother? Embezzled public funds?

[He could go on and on.]

[Oh. ... Oh. He feels his stomach bottom out a little bit when Sai starts guessing, and even though it was obviously him just taking wild guesses pretty fast, he still visibly pales.]

N-no, th-... that's taking it way too far...!

[Those aren't wild guesses though. He actually knows people who did those things.]

Then what was it?

[Perhaps, but his initial reaction was that Sai knew more than he was letting on with those first couple of guesses.]

Nothing that's worth bringing up. [Even if it's obviously making the situation somehow even more uncomfortable simply by trying to broach the subject.]
