Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on May 18th.

Well, you should. It's a good way of making friends. [Or to figure out who was friends with your friends. Although in Sai's case he's definitely not using the term 'friends' the way it ought to be used.]

I've... been told as much. It just really isn't the kind of thing I'm very good with.

[Sai doesn't have anyone like that though~]

Not good with the technology? Or just not good at making friends?

[Admittedly, Sai is also not very good at that. People that used to hang around him tend to either want to use him or to worship him.]

[He hesitates for a moment. He wasn't expecting to have his statement questioned, and it's a little embarrassing to admit to someone he's only just met when the conversation has been so awkward already, but...]

The second part. I... wasn't very well liked back home.

[It wasn't that Sai particularly cared or that he wanted to be sympathetic. He was just curious and he liked having his curiosity satisfied.]

Why? What was wrong with you?

[Wow, as if there weren't enough excuses for Shinji to not want to go into too much detail about his home world, that particular phrasing isn't about to change his mind.]

People just... Had their reasons. [He can come up with plenty of valid examples for not being liked, but if Sai wants to find any of them out, he's going to have to try a little harder than that.]

You killed someone? Lots of them? Or maybe your personality was just unlikeable? You were creepy? Dissected animals for fun? Killed your grandmother? Embezzled public funds?

[He could go on and on.]

[Oh. ... Oh. He feels his stomach bottom out a little bit when Sai starts guessing, and even though it was obviously him just taking wild guesses pretty fast, he still visibly pales.]

N-no, th-... that's taking it way too far...!

[Those aren't wild guesses though. He actually knows people who did those things.]

Then what was it?

[Perhaps, but his initial reaction was that Sai knew more than he was letting on with those first couple of guesses.]

Nothing that's worth bringing up. [Even if it's obviously making the situation somehow even more uncomfortable simply by trying to broach the subject.]

Why don't you think it's worth bringing up? I want to know.

[And he isn't leaving until he gets a proper answer.]

Because... it doesn't matter here, does it? [Even if it is clearly still a sensitive topic, and therefore matters to him personally despite the whole world-shift thing. But, still, he is going to do his best to keep a tight lid on this information.]

It could, you know. [Especially because it is clearly a sensitive topic and Shinji isn't telling him anything.]

A lot of it had to do with... specific situations happening in my world. There's no way it could matter here. [Not that he sounds particularly assured of this fact, but it's a vaguely comforting thought for him, at least.]

Then why can't you just tell me? Stingy.

Because... because it doesn't matter and I really don't want to talk about it.

[He actually sounds rather decisive about this, if not distraught. He's starting to seriously consider simply getting up and leaving to be an acceptable solution to getting out of this conversation.]

It seems like it matters to you a lot though, doesn't it?

[Leaving wouldn't work. Sai would probably chase him.]

W-well, of course it does. [It has to do with him, so why wouldn't it matter?]

Hm....

[Sai has to take a moment now to think back on why Shinji is so defensive about this. And how best to get him to break and just tell him already.

People didn't like him. And the reason was important to Shinji of all people. Why was that?

And then he remembers the way Shinji's face had paled when he had started guessing.]

...Guilt?

[As much as the idea of letting this incredibly strange person know any sort of details about his life left Shinji feeling nothing short of apprehensive, he found himself wondering just how much information it would take to satisfy Sai's curiosity and get him to leave him alone. Before responding, he pauses to figure out just what he wants to let him know.]

There was a war going on back home, and... things didn't always go the way they were supposed to. [Even admitting that much felt like a bad idea. Ugh.]

[It really depends on how interesting the information is and how much it bothers Shinji.]

[There's no judgement in his tone, although Sai is watching for Shinji's reaction.]

[He remains silent for a few moments, because while Sai is right, that particular incident wasn't something that he actually received any sort of anger from other people over until he was brought to Death City. Strange how things like that work, sometimes.]

A lot of things happened. [He tries as much as he can to keep a neutral tone, but fails to keep out a lot of bitterness.]

[Ah.

Sai tilts his head to look at Shinji, who he is sure has dodged the statement again.]

And?

[Dodging uncomfortable topics is one of his more well-hones skills.]

I'm not sure why you want to know so badly. [And it's time to go on the defensive a little more.]

[But being so dodgy is practically like admitting it. Only the truth ever made people that dodgy.]

It's a bad habit of mine from back when I didn't know if I was a human or not.
