Description: Every morning in the city, Morning Training takes place to prepare the guests of the city for the war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on February 25th.

[stooping so low as to ask for help from these people is positively excruciating... but seeing yugo figure out his abilities before him was even more so. as much as he hates it, this is the lesser of two evils -- or indignations, as it were.

of course, his seething rage is just that -- seething -- and so it's simple enough to cover it up with that ever-present smile of his. always has been. qilby offers a cheerful greeting, spotting their fearless leader...]

Aah, Master Kid, good morning. Could I trouble you for some help?

[careful Qiby, Kid might notice!]

Good morning, Qiby. I take it you want me to tell you what your Meister Ability?

[dissenter]

[le smile!] Right in one. I do believe a month is quite long enough to go without getting that sorted out.

[a deep breath, aaand exhale. easily-mistaken for a sigh, as if rueful because he waited so long to do this... but truthfully it's to try and calm himself. he's not certain if souls go so far as to reflect their owner's emotions, but he'd rather be safe than sorry.]

Is it... Really as simple as that? Just looking, I mean?

[perfectorder]

[a slight arch of the brow. yes...that was a long time.]

It is, and it only takes a few seconds.

[dissenter]

[he has the good grace to look at least a little shame-faced. the good grace, or the good acting.]

I suppose I have no excuse then. But better late than never, I suppose.

[perfectorder]

One moment.

[and he's closing his eyes as he activates his Soul Perception. to Qiby, however, it may look like nothing is happening.]

[dissenter]

[that's exactly what it does (doesn't?) look like. qilby was expecting a feeling of scrutiny, but in truth, he seems to be the one doing the scrutinizing... eyeing the silent boy, his natural curiosity overwhelming whatever reservations he had before.

he knew those with the gift of seeing a person's soul, but they were dragons -- his kin, far above the inhabitants that called this planet home. so how was it that abilities like that came to be on this world?

the old eliatrope's content to wonder, maintaining a courteous silence. if this is a power that requires concentration, he hardly wants to break it.]

[perfectorder]

[hm...an interesting soul that reflected traits he could already see from his few interactions with the older man.

his ability, however, is more interesting, and there's a slight raise of the brows as Kid examines it. he's not overly familiar with it, but he had done his homework.]

...That's rather fascinating.

[reopens his eyes and looks at him with renewed interest.]

Your ability is Soul Portal. You can actually deflect certain attacks by creating portals.

[his turn to arch both brows. qilby looks neither fascinated nor surprised, but simply... relieved. pleased, but relieved.

he lets out a breath he didn't even realise he was holding.] I'd... Hoped it'd be something like that. After my brother discovered he had the same power--

[there are a number of ways that sentence could be finished, but he opt for neither. they range from the petty to the hopeful... but mostly the petty.] --aah, this is far more reassuring to hear. Thank you.

[perfectorder]

[his brother? hm, interesting.]

So you're familiar with this type of ability?

[dissenter]

The ability to create portals is one unique to my kind. On my world, at least. [he can't speak for all the other worlds in existence. yet.

he smiles wryly.] Would you believe me if I suggested I came here under my own power?

[perfectorder]

[...say what.]

You mean to suggest you actually voluntarily traveled to this world as opposed to BREW choosing to bring you here?

[dissenter]

Under my own power. [he repeats; it's an important iteration.] But-- not necessarily voluntarily. Mistakes are made sometimes...

[he shifts uncomfortably, as if he's loathe to admit it. but mistaken or not, qilby sounds quite confident as he explains further.] I believe I told you that I created a device quite similar to BREW, a long time ago. With its aid, it's possible for people who've mastered our powers to draw forth portals to other worlds, other dimensions. [le sigh.] And I'd just passed through one of these portals when I awoke, here.

Though it is, I suppose, possible that it's just a coincidence. [again, not that he sounds too happy to admit it.]

[perfectorder]

[he listens carefully, trying to parse the information. it was...hard to believe, but then again it was not impossible for other worlds to have such mechanisms. at this point he was almost willing to believe just about anything. almost.

still there was some skepticism, if only it really was hard to believe at first.]

So this...world traveling is common where you are from? And that it might have been possible for you to come here without BREW's help?

[dissenter]

Common among my people, yes. But we were an old race, and so sometimes our knowledge and capabilities far outstripped those of the newer ones on the planet.

[they aren't the humblest words, but there's a distinct matter-of-factness in the way he speaks. to him, his people were objectively powerful -- that's just the way things were.] And, as I say, that's what I believe. If I'm correct, it raises some interesting questions about the laws of your universe -- such as where my powers went, if BREW did not take them.

[a pause, then more quietly--] Or if it's possible to return the way I arrived.

[perfectorder]

[...hm.]

It certainly does...and that is an interesting question and theory.

On the other hand, it could also be dangerous. Assuming there was a way to create some sort of mechanism or portal to other worlds, it would be disastrous if such knowledge and technology fell into the wrong hands. BREW is bad enough with being able to bring people in. I can only imagine the damage if it were possible to go to other worlds.

[especially if the witches could still use their magic or even bring or affect Madness there.]

[dissenter]

[so that's the kind of leader this boy was. too scared to seize power, too weak to hold onto it. for all qilby's spiteful thoughts -- my portals wouldn't be for you -- his calm expression never flickers. he's far too practiced at lying for that.]

I see your point, and it's an important one to make... [he rubs his chin thoughtfully.] You've certainly got enough problems to fix on your world, without worrying about doing the same on others. Having that sort of accountability's an admirable thing.

Do you envision a time where you won't have to worry about your enemies, like that?

[perfectorder]

[it was all about balance, but also pretty much true at this point. maybe once he was more confident he might be able to push more, but definitely not right now. there was too much at stake and too much uncertainty in himself for that.]

I do, and I will make it happen.

[there was just too much imbalance and disorder in the world. it was one thing to be just against witches. at least that was only one "evil power." but having to deal with the kishin as well?]

I also don't plan for this war to be drawn out longer than it needs to be.

[dissenter]

Which is something I think all of us can be grateful for.

[a substantial pause.] ...Forgive me for a moment, here. People of my age tend to believe everyone around them wants, and would appreciate their advice.

The greater your domain, the greater the reach that your actions as a leader will have -- consequences that reach further than you could even imagine, so many factors are affected by you. You may find that what seems like the decision with the fewest immediate disadvantages will end up creating even more problems than you'd avoided... Or vice versa.

Sometimes the only truly wrong decision is the one unmade, out of uncertainty. [although qilby's never come off as the most overly-merry fellow, there is a distinct sadness in his tone that's not normal.] Your conviction is going to be one of your greatest assets.

[perfectorder]

[he stood there a little surprise. no, he had not expected such words of wisdom, but he listened to it regardless. in fact, he did appreciate it. although he had come a long way from how he was almost nine months ago, he still was uncertain about a lot of things. his need to do things right only made it worse, and he knew it.

so he's silent for a few seconds before he finally responds.]

Your words hold a lot of wisdom and truth of them. Admittedly, I'm still trying to figure out how to best fulfill my duties and follow in my father's footsteps, but you're right. No matter what I do, I have to see it through to the end and have faith in both myself and everyone else around me.

It's a difficult, sometimes thankless job that doesn't get much easier with time. There are simply those suited for rule and those who aren't -- I find that all you can do is just be the sort of person who is.

[just like there're those that excel at telling people what they want to hear. qilby, for his part, has grown to be so good at deception, flattery, that the thought that he might not be the king he says he is never crosses their minds. quite the skill to be proud of.]

You're quite welcome and-- should you need any more wisdom or truth, I'm always available to share. [a laugh, which breaks his earlier melancholy some.] I've got both in spades, especially if it's for a fellow leader.
