Morning Training

Location: Training Ground, Shibusen

Time: 6am to 9am
Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on April 24th.

[Akiha reacts by bringing the staff up to meet the strike, blocking it. The strength of it was good to feel, but it was a little wild, so she pressed forward to knock the staff aside. With a quick reversal, she aimed a strike at Ange's exposed side.]

Is that supposed to impress me? Do I need to fight blindfolded for this to be a challenge?

[ It almost looks like she's going to hit her, but she manages to barely block the move at the last minute. Ange's expression very much indicates she hardly even believes she made that - it's definitely more difficult to focus on that part while she's more emotional. It has upsides and downsides, apparently.

She pushes until Akiha's staff is away from her. ]

Do you really think you're that much above me, Tohno-san?!

[ Another strike, this time aimed high. ]

Judging by that attack and our rankings - yes.

[Akiha deflects the strike and brings her staff down with the end going for the back of Ange's ankle.]

[ That one actually does connect. And there's a moment where it looks like she might lose her balance and fall because of the hit, but if there's anything Ange is an expert at it's falling - so she manages to regain her balance before that happens. Still, Akiha actually hitting her only makes her resolve to try and so something stronger, she can't let herself be humiliated like this, right? ]

So what if we've done a few missions less?!

[ There's nothing 'so what' about it. It's something she's plenty insecure about. But maybe if she just pretends hard enough that she's indifferent about it, she can delude herself into believing that too. She grits her teeth, swinging her sword at Akiha's shoulder the moment she's done speaking. ]

[Akiha had moved inside the range of Ange's sword, trying to take advantage of her connecting strike, to follow through, but she had to abort and bring the staff up to block the strike.]

Have you done any missions that weren't part of a large group where it's just you and him and no one there to save you when you mess up?

[She pivoted while holding the pressure against Ange's sword, trying to drive her knee into the other woman's stomach. Akiha's style -was- a mixture of staff and hand-to-hand.]

Or are you too afraid of failure to go?

[ Shit-- she's almost too distracted by the words to see the knee, but then it flashes out of the corner of her eye. Quick thinking is - unlike strength and technique - something that doesn't fail her, so using the force of the weapons pushing against each other she manages to lean back just far enough for only the tip to brush her. She's having way too many close calls here though. Yeah, she knows that Akiha easily outpowers her. And that this will probably end badly for her at this rate, despite it just being a spar. Or a little more than that by now But despite rational thought telling her to just give up, she's too stubborn to.

Especially right after hearing that. ]

And since when is whatever Yuri and I do any of your business? [ Her tone is definitely annoyed though. It pretty much indicates Akiha's right - she's too scared that she'll fail Yuri again, that she'll look like an idiot again. ]

[With the knee strike missed, Akiha pushes them apart and moves back to where her staff had the range advantage, slowly circling Ange.]

Yuri is my knight. I'd be remiss as his lady if I let his potential be wasted on a meister to scared to do what is best for him. A sword that isn't used rusts in its scabbard.

If you won't take him into battle, perhaps I will. Your fears keep him from getting stronger. Your fear is holding you back, Ushiromiya.

I'm not scared!

[ It almost instinctively comes out. Sure, she's not scared of the monsters, the danger, even harm or death isn't something Ange fears. She's long past that ever since she was prepared to throw away everything that night on that skyscraper. But Akiha is right, there is fear. Just not the kind that Ange herself thinks of, so she just completely overlooks it.

It causes her to move closer and wildly lash out at Akiha again, but it's a complete miss. ]

I don't even have anything to be scared of..! [ Another swing, this time at least in the right direction. She doesn't even care where it manages to connect, she can't even think about it now she's too emotional compared to usually. As long as she can just prove she can at least fight back somehow.. ]

[Akiha eyed the first strike, chuckling just a bit, and then waits for the next one. She was well acquainted with how anger affects combat, having succumbed to it enough times in her and Sion's early missions. She dashes forward under the strike with her staff parallel to the ground.

The strike hits her hard on the shoulder, making her grunt as she wasn't quite as fast as she'd thought she'd be, but with a broad attack to Ange's front, Akiha tries to bear her to the ground underneath her.]

Yes, you are. If you aren't, then tell me why you refuse to go on missions? I think you're just afraid of losing.

I just want to make sure I'm ready! [ At least she's telling the truth now. Not the entire truth, but it's close enough to it, either way - maybe it's due to the slight sense of happiness that she was actually able to land a hit like that. ] It wouldn't be fair if we didn't go as eq--

[ She can't finish the sentence since she's pushed halfway through. Hard. Enough that this time she does lose her balance. She does manage to hold onto her weapon, but she falls to the ground all the same with a groan. ]

[Akiha followed through, dropping down with her knee aimed right at Ange's midsection.]

As equals? You're partners! You have no meister points and he has no Kishin eggs. You're most definitely equals. If you're waiting to know for sure you're ready, you'll never be. You just have to have trust in your partner and go.

[ She quickly tries to roll over a little, but she doesn't get far before Akiha is already hitting her all the same - except more against her side, which still hurts - it sends a sharp pain through her body. ]

Like you understand! You know that he's been a knight before back home and I haven't even really fought anyone before this, let alone held a sword--! [ With the last word she's already swinging her arm up despite being on the ground, trying to whack Akiha with her weapon to try and shove the other girl aside, maybe she'll have some chance then of still getting up. ]

[Akiha brings her staff up quickly to block the attack, but it shifts her weight enough off Ange that with some more effort she could get free.]

So? I'm sure he knew that when he agreed to be your partner. Do you think he's not prepared to help you?

He helps me all the time..!

[ The core of her frustration. Not with Yuri, but with herself. And the fact that she's finally throwing that out gives her a force that's enough to make her get Akiha off her even more and get up, even as she can feel her side stinging. Darnit, Akiha really did get her good there, but then again, she isn't planning to just give up from that. Forget the fact that this is a spar, Ange always gets into things way too much.

Who cares if Akiha hears this. Who cares if anyone does. Surely she'll regret it later, as used as she is to keeping her thoughts to herself, but right now she just has to throw it out. ]

He's constantly getting me out of danger already since I can't fight as well as him, I'm practically useless! [ And despite the pain she can still feel, she's already at it again, aiming a little lower to try and hit the other girl's legs, gritting her own teeth in the process. ]

[Akiha stumbles back as Ange gets to her feet, using the staff to keep herself upright. That meant she wasn't prepared enough for Ange's second attack, and the strike knocked her own weapon back into her leg.

With a hiss of pain, Akiha pivoted on her other leg, spun, and sent a vicious strike at Ange's back.]

If you can't fight, you need to think. Have you no pride in yourself?! Are you useless, Miss Unaffected-by-the-Madness?

[ She really needs to stop getting too caught up in the surprise of managing to make blows connect, it gives her just that split second pause where she's too late to block.. the hit knocks the wind right out of her, but she quickly tries to breathe in again before Akiha can just continue her attack even more. ]

Nothing is going to do much good if I can't even keep up a basic battle out there! Is that concept so difficult to understand, "Lady" Tohno?! [ Okay, that last part is a slightly different issue - mostly Ange being jealous over Yuri, but she doesn't even realise consciously that's jealousy, so it's not even anything she can fully spill.

She turns to face Akiha's weapon, attempting to push it further away from what was just her back with her own to gain some more ground. ]

[Akiha smirked.] Are you recognizing me as your better?

[The smirk grows with the way Ange moves, focusing on the staff and forgetting Akiha was a weird combination of staff and unarmed. She spun the other way, on her other leg to send a roundhouse kick... right at Ange's back. Again.]

How the hell are you going to know if you can or cannt keep up with basic battle out there if you don't go on missions?

[ .. Shit. She realises her mistake only a moment to late, right as the kick hits her and manages to knock her right back to the ground with a grunt. ]

I've been on those emergency missions that lots of people go on [ a cough. ] .. before! I know what it's like!

[ She's getting up, but it's going much slowly now her body feels so battered. Her mind is still going strong, but it doesn't help when her body is much slower in responding to it now. ]

[Instead of following up the strike to beat Ange down again, she twirled the staff up to rest on her shoulder and waited for the woman to get up.]

Those missions are nothing like the others when Shibusen isn't looking over our shoulders, there to save us when we mess up. Out there on solo missions, you learn to be resourceful. You learn to listen to your partner and when the enemy is before you and you're in pain, bleeding with a Kishin egg standing over you, you get back on your feet, take your partner in hand again and trust in them and their unique abilities.

It doesn't matter how great or competent you are on your own, Ushiromiya. What matters is how competent you are together.

How do you even know what I've been doing all this time..?!

[ At least she's fully come back to her feet now, more or less. Endurance is at least Ange has plenty enough of, or maybe instead of endurance it's more just general stubbornness. ]

The last time we saw a Kishin egg, I wanted to fight it!

Then what stopped you?

[Now that Ange was on her feet, Akiha moves in again, attacking with a simple thrust at Ange's shoulder. Simple, yes, but it's still hurt if it hit.]

[ At least she manages to block that one since it's pretty simple and she sees it coming. She can feel it's more difficult to get her body to move now though thanks to earlier hits, but she can still force herself. ]

Yuri literally carried me away without even asking! [ She swings her weapon at Akiha's arm while she has the chance, but halfway through it gets less strong as she seems to think of what follows. ] Since he's.. [ .. protecting her, right? Because of his promise. ]

[Seeing the swing falter, Akiha targets the wooden sword this time in an attempt to disarm her instead of just blocking it.]

Since he's what?

[ She barely even seems to notice the weapon being knocked out of her hands at first. ]

Since he's.. always trying to protect me first. Since he knows I'm not as strong as him. [ Maybe that's why - despite noticing her practice sword clattering on the ground - she doesn't immediately bother to move and pick it up, almost defeatist. ]

[Here, Ange, have your feet knocked out from under you.]
