[Okabe whistles and darts around the grounds, trying to find where this fabled "meister ability" section is. He's damn curious as to what his is - he's not used to having special abilities. That is, past his Reading Steiner, but Reading Steiner is more like a third eye than a "special ability."]

[Maybe on a bit more sleep, this could even be... fun? In that dorky, "hey look I'm in an anime!" way. He might even start to show a little muscle on that wiry frame of his.]

[But he has business here. He manages to find the section he's looking for and enters casually, hands in the pockets of his lab coat. Now where's the guy?]

[The guy in question walks up to Okabe, hands in pockets. Anyone who knew Miles Edgeworth well enough would know that he was dressed down for the occasion; the sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up to his elbows, and over that shirt he wore a black vest, and his black trousers were made of light material. There is not a single patch of wine red/magenta/fuchsia on his ensemble, and no hint of frills.

He carries a practice sword balanced on his shoulder. While he's not built to be a fighter exactly, he shows signs of having been trained in the basics, at the very least.]

Good morning. You are here to figure out what your Meister ability may be, correct?

[Unfortunately, Okabe doesn't know Miles Edgeworth, so he raises an eyebrow. Spiffy guy. Spiffy guy even has a sword to complete the look.]

[And he looks like a complete hardass. He snickers internally. BREW seems to have a thing for people who can't have any fun.]

[He makes a sweeping gesture to the sign.]

Indeed I am. Now how will this work?
prosecutory: so far away; staind (♙ this is my life)

WELL YOU SHOULD'VE RANG IT LOUDER

[Do you know how much work Spiffy Guy put into earning that practice sword. DO YOU. Also actually he only had one hand in a pocket because wow Auste you do realize he needs the other hand to carry that sword.

Anyway, Auste failing to describe things aside, Edgeworth brings that sword down from his broad, delicious shoulder, sets it point down into the ground and uses it like a cane.]

It's quite simple. Because I do not possess Soul Perception, we will deduce your Meister ability from your skills and strengths, and the powers you possessed in your home world.

Alternately, Meister abilities may manifest in battle, so a sparring session is one way to truly discover what yours is.

[It definitely sounds like Edgeworth has pitched this speech to everyone else who asked - certain, almost rehearsed, and with an air of confidence. Clearly, he has been at this Meister ability business for quite some time, and has honed his study to improve at narrowing down a Meister's special power.]

[Oh, god. Spiffy guy is really, really spiffy - to the point he's using a practice sword like a cane. Okabe won't lie - he's kind of impressed, both at this dude's oratory skills and at his self-assured stance.]

[Kind of like a lawyer, almost.]

[Wait, sparring? With this dude?! Aaahhhhh motherfucker. Okabe twitches a bit, but quickly returns to an upright, smirking stance.]

Hm... See, at home, the only thing I possessed that could be a "special power" was my Reading Steiner. That was more like a third eye or a sixth sense, though.

[He sets aside that practice sword and instead brings out an organizer and a pen from the pocket of his trousers; he had specifically chosen these pants for their deep pockets, so he could fit his organizer into them.]

Can you describe it for me?
zealous_steiner: (badass couple)

[personal profile] zealous_steiner 2013-02-10 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, he's got one of those little agenda notebooks. Definitely a hardass.]

[But then... oof, he's got to explain time travel theory again?! He guesses he doesn't mind too much - it's really the only thing that makes him stand out, after all.]

To understand my ability, there's a bit of lead-up. Exposition, if you will. Stop me if you're familiar with any of what I'm saying.

You see, time does not consist of one uninterrupted line. It's made up of infinite timelines, which we call world-lines. If you are killed, for example, and someone travels back in time to prevent your death, two divergent world-lines split off from that point: one in which you're dead, one in which you're not. When your consciousness jumps world-lines due to a time traveler's act, your memories are ordinarily overwritten to reflect the change that happened.

The essence of Reading Steiner is that when I change world-lines, I retain the memories I had from the previous world-line, and the world-line before that, and so on, and I can sense small changes in world-lines that others cannot.

[Edgeworth nods, and then prepares to listen and take notes.

Time travel, huh. At this point, having accepted the notion of various universes and versions of worlds, Edgeworth hardly raises an eyebrow at this story. There's no reason for anyone to fabricate anything in front of him unless they wanted an inaccurate deduction on purpose.]

And how do you change these world-lines, exactly?

[After some help with Neji, Steve waits around the correct area until it's his turn to get his 'soul read'... or something like that. He wants to know what meister ability he has, so that he can fully use it to his advantage. It's wartime, and as long as it's not completely destructive, he plans on fully utilizing his ability.

Even if it's not something he can really use, it's still good to know what he has.]
