By now, no one is popping in and out of existence, but that's hardly any consolation when odd things keep happening.

At first it's not that bad. An innocuous item or two shows up. Something harmless wanders around that you're sure has never been in Death City before.

By the second day, bigger and more dangerous things start showing up and by the third...

Well.

As long as you don't mind the giant pieces of debris or creatures blocking the road or the sky, it's not that bad, right?

[Unfortunately, Bakura's idea of "a lot of space" isn't quite the same as L's. The detective is a habitual and largely oblivious encroacher. When Bakura halts his steps, L bumps against the very back that Bakura wants to protect and recoils, not nearly as interested in the game shop as Bakura seems to be.]

Don't stop that way because you saw something to do with games.

[[There is a very sharp intake of breath as L knocks into him. It takes him a moment to compose himself because OW.]]

It happened to Light and I two days ago. I understand the sudden distraction, but if it's closed, there's not much reason to stay, is there? Unless the owner was in the habit of leaving doors unlocked, in which case I still want to move on.

Give me a minute... [[it's said softly, almost pleading. Because damnit, his back is still smarting. Going to slowly and VERY CAREFULLY start walking again...]]

What happened to you and Light?

[He's impatient, but he holds back for his friend's sake, waiting for him to recover.]

I found our handcuffs, and he found his father's police badge. It was an emotional day for him.

Bakura blinked, going to turn to look behind him before realizing there wasn't far just his neck could go before his back started trying to move too. Bad idea.

"Your handcuffs...?" he repeated, eyebrows rising.

[He rolls his eyes, and though they're whited out, it's not too hard to miss the expression of impatience and annoyance.]

Yes. Come on, didn't you ever wonder why a pair of handcuffs was my Weapon form?

Not really... they just fit you. Didn't think there was a specific pair that were significant...

Light and I were cuffed together for months. Because I suspected him. There was never more than a distance of six feet between us at any time.

[shiromadoushi]

[[This time Bakura did turn, only to wince and slowly turn forward again]]

And you didn't kill each other...?

[dead_black_eyes]

It would have been fairly incriminating if he'd tried anything of the sort. And I wasn't about to murder my prime suspect before he proved his guilt.

[He pauses.]

Not that we didn't come close, a few times.

I'm not sure if it says more about your stubbornness or patience that those things kept you both from it...

There's no need to sound so amazed. We're both stubborn, and we're both more patient than we're given credit for. Besides... you know as well as I do that I see little point in living without him. That's what things are like, after you've met your match.

[shiromadoushi]

[[a soft sigh]] Un... that much I can see, at least... You'd be lost without him to push against....

It's sort of like a twisted version of a soul mate, in a way...

[[he trailed off with an unhappy note, thinking of his own situation.]]

[L snorts, darkly amused.]

How disgusting. Misa Amane loved talking about soulmates and it took everything not to gag every time her mouth opened.

He just always knows what I'm talking about. And that's worth giving up a lot of things for.

... about her and Light...? [[It was an easy guess, that]]

...Just don't give up too much, okay?

She thought they were in love, and it made her happy to live in that delusion. I pitied her, rather than resented her. She was annoying, but I had what she wanted: the full attention of his incredible mind.

[His voice gets a lot softer at Bakura's plea.]

Unlikely. I have so little.

[shiromadoushi]

[[There's a soft sigh]] That's why you shouldn't give that up... [[His voice is also soft and quiet as he pushes open the door to the pastry shop, hoping it open until he's sure L has caught it.]]

[L catches the door, this time careful to make sure it doesn't swing back and hit Bakura in the back.]

Life is like boarding an airplane. If you travel lightly, there are fewer things to hold you up.

[[The teen shook his head slightly.]] The less you carry, the more what you have to sacrifice leaves you crippled....

I am carrying him, now. And you. I am responsible and accountable for nothing, and no one else...

[He actually smiles.]

It's so intimate. Like being no one at all, and very important, at the very same time.

[[A smile. A real smile, not one that hides a knife. Bakura can't help but pause and almost admire it and the warm feeling that comes with it.]]

You aren't no one. You're still you. [[There's a soft, warm smile of his own]] Just not the title any longer. Instead of carrying that... you have people you care about you carry instead.

[Just because there's no knife doesn't mean that the smile is without sharp edges, the variety that results from a broken mirror.]

Something like that... but it's not such a risk, because I know that I'll be carried if I need to be. That you won't use any weakness I show you against me...
