Description: And then it gets worse.



By now, no one is popping in and out of existence, but that's hardly any consolation when odd things keep happening.

At first it's not that bad. An innocuous item or two shows up. Something harmless wanders around that you're sure has never been in Death City before.

By the second day, bigger and more dangerous things start showing up and by the third...

Well.

As long as you don't mind the giant pieces of debris or creatures blocking the road or the sky, it's not that bad, right?

[He actually smiles.]

It's so intimate. Like being no one at all, and very important, at the very same time.

[[A smile. A real smile, not one that hides a knife. Bakura can't help but pause and almost admire it and the warm feeling that comes with it.]]

You aren't no one. You're still you. [[There's a soft, warm smile of his own]] Just not the title any longer. Instead of carrying that... you have people you care about you carry instead.

[Just because there's no knife doesn't mean that the smile is without sharp edges, the variety that results from a broken mirror.]

Something like that... but it's not such a risk, because I know that I'll be carried if I need to be. That you won't use any weakness I show you against me...

Yes. You and Light are the only ones I've ever had.

[[After a pastry break the pair heads back towards their apartment, only for Bakura to pause once more]]

...A helicopter...?

[L blinks, cocking his head.]

I beg your pardon? A...helicopter? Where?

[He doesn't hear anything to suggest as much.]

[shiromadoushi]

On the rooftop over there, [[nods in the direction before pausing and instead pointing]] Can you make it out at all? It's a bit hard to see...

[dead_black_eyes]

[His map leaves no doubt as to the unfortunate location of the craft.]

That's Black Mesa... Matt's building.

[He says so as if this is enough to deter him from wanting to get any closer. But Light's words ring alongside those ever-present bells.

So hate them, then. If they weren't your successors, you plainly wouldn't be tolerating this. So what is it that's making you? How much do you owe them, really? At the end of the day, they're only people, L. People who have designed a future that you have no room in.

His fist clenches at his side, and he strides forward, past Bakura and toward the building.]

If we move fast, we can probably check it out. Let me know if I'm about to run headlong into something.

Eh? Aaaa--- [[Bakura hurries after.]] Let me get in front, I'll get the door...

[dead_black_eyes]

We're not using the door. There's a fire escape and it should get us up to the roof. Or close enough to pull ourselves up the rest of the way.

[There's a white-hot determination coursing through him, now, and Bakura would be hard-pressed to try to change his mind.]

[shiromadoushi]

A fire es--- Ryuzaki, I can't climb up onto something like that right now...!

[dead_black_eyes]

Then maybe you could go through the door, but understand that I would likely be removed from the premises if I tried to join you. Be discreet, at least... I'll meet you on the roof.

[shiromadoushi]

[[blink. blink blink]] ...You would? But...

[[he trailed off]] ...will you be all right, by yourself?

[dead_black_eyes]

This is hardly the first time I've climbed a fire escape to evade notice.

[He sounds insulted by the implication.]

[shiromadoushi]

...I should have expected that...

[[a soft sigh]] If you're sure... See you soon.

[[and with a last glance, he heads for the door to make his way to the top]]

[L does the same by way of the fire escape. He's fairly certain that it's under surveillance, expecting nothing less from a former successor's premises. He absolutely expects thoroughness; he just doesn't expect care. Once it's clear that he's not here to sabotage or hurt anything, except perhaps himself, whoever might be watching will probably glance away.

He thinks he can live with people glancing away from him.

Though his going isn't particularly swift, it takes him two or three minutes tops to reach the roof, and the second he touches the helicopter, his face lights up. He won't know if it's his until he is actually inside and is able to check whether his 37-digit passcode is accepted to even fire the thing up, but he's excited, nonetheless.]

[[It takes Bakura just a fraction more, and he pushes open the door in time to see that expression. Which... honestly befuddles him just a bit.]]

...familiar with helicopters...?

[dead_black_eyes]

Yeah.

[A relief to hear Bakura's voice instead of someone harshly telling him to step away from the vehicle.]

I think it's mine... I had two custom-built for the investigation, you know. They were wonderful.

[He opens the hatch and pulls himself inside, sitting happily in the cockpit and running his slender fingers over the access keypad.

37 digits later, the lights are on and humming, and for just a few moments, L looks like he got just what he wanted for Christmas.]

[[Bakura hesitates a moment before very very carefully climbing in after.

... it's a little strange, seeing L looking like that, he has to admit.]]

So you know how to fly it?

[dead_black_eyes]

[He blinks slowly.]

Yes. I know how to fly it. It's my helicopter.

[But his smile slips a bit, along with his fingers away from the keypad.]

Knowing how and being able are different things, though.

[He rises, tumbling gracelessly aside into the copilot's seat.]

Get in.

[shiromadoushi]

[[Bakura's reply of pointing out that Ryuzaki could have had someone else to fly it for him was cut short as the detective continued.]] Ee--eeh?! But...

[[he hesitated a moment more before moving into the newly vacated seat, a bit of nervous excitement starting to fill him]] I've never done anything like this before... [[He's pointing out the obvious, he knows, but....]]

[Someone else, when time is absolutely of the essence? Silly, ignorant boy.]

I'd bet that no one outside of a video game tutorial has ever taught you how to operate any mode of transportation. You could just admit that you're thrilled, already.
