EVENT: The Great BREW Malfunction Pt II [OPEN]

Description: And then it gets worse.

By now, no one is popping in and out of existence, but that's hardly any consolation when odd things keep happening.

At first it's not that bad. An innocuous item or two shows up. Something harmless wanders around that you're sure has never been in Death City before.

By the second day, bigger and more dangerous things start showing up and by the third...

Well.

As long as you don't mind the giant pieces of debris or creatures blocking the road or the sky, it's not that bad, right?

[Of course he's right. Even if he occasionally comes across as a bit of a lunatic, L has pretty good instincts for certain things. And flying a helicopter happens to be one of them.

Never mind that this is insanely dangerous and irresponsible.]

If you're nervous, it'll just negatively affect your performance. Ordinarily you'd put on a headset to remain alert of air traffic, but I don't know the channels in Death City. So put it on anyway... it should be in the compartment to your right. Also to your left is a lever called the collective, and that controls your altitude by changing the angle of the main rotor's blades... at the top of the collective, you'll feel something that twists and that's the throttle. It raises your engine speed, which needs to go up with the collective. The RPM always has to be in line with whatever the collective is set to, that is extremely important. The lever between your legs is the cyclic, and that changes your tilt forward, backward, and on either side. Your feet should be on the anti-torque pedals, and those control the direction that the helicopter is pointing. If you don't keep your yaw balanced, you could send us into a tailspin and kill us.

[He's pretty cheerful explaining all of it.]

Aaa... [[a small falter before Bakura points to each thing and recites back what it is, looking over to L for confirmation before a pause.]]

.... what's the yaw? Something in the back? How do I balance it?

[L seems largely unconcerned, which is in itself pretty worrisome. But he retains his cheerful composure as he elaborates for his nervous new pilot.]

Yaw just means... basically a name for the type of movement that occurs when you use the pedals to change the orientation of the craft's nose. You'll get the hang of it.

[[a small nod]] There's a warning system if it's not right, right? Something that beeps to tell me to fix it...

[[If it were a video game there would be, and goodness knows there's enough tech in this thing to make it feel like one!]]

[L's thumb wanders to his mouth.]

...sure. Yes, I will say something if we are about to crash.

[[blink. blink blink]] I think by the time you can tell, it wouldn't be much warning...

Then you'd better not crash.

[L considers himself a reasonable man, Bakura, get with the program already.]

...I'm going to be trying not to...

...Say something if it seems like we're going to before it starts to happen, okay?

You do? [[a distracted blink as he's trying to feel out all the controls and test them out before turning the helicopter on.]] Specific ones?

Don't tell anyone, but I'm having surgery on my eyes.

[[Bakura turned, eyes wide]] You are? They have a way to fix them...?

[He puts his hand over the throttle.]

Before we take off, you have to make sure this is all the way open.

[[a nod before he puts his hand lightly over L's]]

If you need me... no matter when... just call, okay? [[says softly.]]

Yeah... I'm really not sure how things will be after the transplant, but... I will.

[Firmly, he takes his hand out from under Bakura's and wraps his fingers around the throttle.]

This helicopter has a 9 to 1 ratio, and that means that the engine will operate at 2700 RPM, amd the main rotor will be at 300 RPM. You'll know it's OK when the rotor tachometer needle and the engine tachometer needle are superimposed over each other... look at the dashboard, they are marked.

[[A nod as he lets the personal subject drop and focuses on the helicopter]] aa--- Un, I see it. So just keep them both in sync, and it's good?

[As the throttle opens and the RPMs align, the whole helicopter vibrates as the blades start spinning. L's almost grinning.]

So... Once they're in-sync, and only then... very slowly... Raise the collective, and we'll be off the ground, and then you have to use the cyclic. It'll shudder at first... don't panic, that's normal, but be prepared to do what I tell you, as I tell you to do it.

Got it... [[a nod. There's that nervous anticipation.

He had no idea what he was doing. He had to trust in Ryuzaki to tell him what to do so they both didn't die.

[The copter lurches forward, the entire craft shuddering as L had said it would.

Hopefully, Bakura wouldn't be scared enough to do anything rash or, worse, freeze up.]

[Good thing, too, since they're officially airborne, hovering over Black Mesa.]

It feels like we're leaning a little bit to the left... push the right pedal as you raise the collective to level us off, OK?

[[...Praise from Ryuzaki? That wasn't about his cooking?]]

Aaa-- [[and he adjusts as instructed]] Like this?

Probably. You have to use your own judgment. You're the one who can see... are we level?

I think so... I'm a little nervous so it's a little hard to tell! [[a small laugh]]

That's normal, but unnecessary.

The reason we were shuddering a moment ago was a phenomenon known as Effective Translational Lift, or ETL for short. It's the transition from vertical to forward movement... so now you need reduce the collective, but follow through by pushing forward on the cyclic. If you let up, our nose will go too high and our speed will decrease. Steady on.

[[He nods, thought he's not 100% sure he got all of that. He caught what he hopes was the important part, pushing forward]]

[L can feel the forward movement, but so much of this is just faith.]

I think so, yes.

If you master the collective and the cyclic, and get a good feel for them, I'm telling you right now that most maneuvers only need those. So... if you let up on the forward cyclic pressure, we can gain altitude and start climbing.
