By now, no one is popping in and out of existence, but that's hardly any consolation when odd things keep happening.

At first it's not that bad. An innocuous item or two shows up. Something harmless wanders around that you're sure has never been in Death City before.

By the second day, bigger and more dangerous things start showing up and by the third...

Well.

As long as you don't mind the giant pieces of debris or creatures blocking the road or the sky, it's not that bad, right?

[L has a surgery for his eyes tomorrow. He knows that he should be resting and preparing but ultimately, it's very, very difficult to sit still with so much going on, and with the ringing in his ears so loud that it's impossible to think straight.

But he's not just a patient, and he's not just mildly distracted by that "bell" problem he's had since the end of his part in the Kira case. He's also a detective, still arguably the world's greatest, and still holding out for some kind of solution to why BREW saw fit to switch the role of so many Meisters and Weapons. Going back to the place he first appeared as a Meister a few days ago seems like a logical starting point, and he does so, wearing his discreet headset and making his way toward the church.

There's something blocking his path when he reaches the threshold. His hands press against the thick metal that is fairly baking in the July heat, and he withdraws them hastily, not just to avoid being burned, but because another bell is just like a knife twisting in his gut.

It's not from his world, but it's as if it was placed there just for his sake. And like so many things lately, the sense is that it was all to screw with him.]

[shiromadoushi]

Ryuzaki...?

[[Bakura pauses, blinking. He has a shopping bag in hand, just a few things inside it]]

...Did something happen?

[dead_black_eyes]

It's just...

[Difficult to articulate without sounding like he's a complete loon?

Oh, right, but Bakura has always thought so.]

It's just a bell. I wasn't expecting to find it here. This just keeps getting worse, doesn't it?

[A commentary, and also a little fishing question in an attempt to confirm that, yes, things actually are getting worse.]

[shiromadoushi]

[[Not a complete loon...]]

The things showing up? Un... [[His hand started drifting to his chest before falling back to his side.]] More and more of them keep showing up...

[[a pause as he side eyes the bell]] ... and bigger things too...

How big?

[He can't tell much, just that it is much, much taller than he is and many times wider.]

And what else have you seen?

[Honestly he's partly just looking for an excuse to get away from it.]

...I think it might be almost as big as the church... though it's a little hard to tell from this angle.

[[He hesitates just a moment]]

The Sennen Ring was in the claw game at the arcade...

[dead_black_eyes]

[The news concerning the bell's size causes L to take several hasty steps backward, as though he is afraid of it. And, really? He might be. Everything in his manner and bearing suggest it.]

Did you get it...?

[shiromadoushi]

[[Bakura shook his head]] Nanami did when I was calling the other Bakura... thought I was still hallucinating...

[[a hesitation]] ... is everything all right...?

[[Another weird phobia...?]]

[Unfortunately, something like that.

L knows better than to ask if Bakura can hear bells, too. And he knows better than to admit that he hears them all the time. He's only said that to one other person, ever, and it's better to keep that number low for as long as possible.]

I suppose it's just unpleasant to think about someone being here when it appeared. It would be a terrible way to die.

Who has the ring now?

[shiromadoushi]

Who do you think? [[a soft sigh]] ... I don't think there's anything it can do here... it's unpowered like everything else.

[[another small pause]] ...I was heading for the pasty shop... shall we go together?

[dead_black_eyes]

Yes... I think we can.

[He sounds uncertain. He had a somewhat unpleasant encounter the last time he went out for pastries, but he was alone then, and he thinks that any less-than-friendly approach will be deterred by the mere fact that he is being accompanied.]

You're sounding more lucid than you've been.

[shiromadoushi]

I stopped taking the pain meds from the hospital, [[He smiles as he starts walking. There is a slight stiffness as he moves, as he's still taking great care to keep his back still and not brush against anything.]] Just taking some normal ones now. So I can actually thing.

[dead_black_eyes]

[L follows, the odd collection of shapes and numbers that represents Bakura courtesy of his headset simple enough to fall into step behind.

A little exhilarating, to think that he'll soon be past this and seeing again.]

Good. It's taken an incredible amount of patience to deal with you.

[[A soft laugh]] I can only image...

Thank you, for that. I know that patience with people being idiots isn't your strong point...

Well, you really needed it.

[Said stiffly, as if trying to shake off the praise.]

Un. [[a soft laugh]] I'm a big enough idiot normally without something making me more of an airhead than normal, huh?

We should play chess later. A real game. [[Because he knows you were being easy on him. Because really. There was no way he should have done as well as he had when doped up]]

That's more than manageable.

[Provided it happens before tomorrow, before it's his turn to be on pain medication.]

In the meantime, make sure I don't run into any other large objects. Keep me informed. I have a good map of the city but it doesn't account for these new articles.

[[a nod]] Just stay behind me. I'm giving everything a lot of space since I don't want to do anything that might make something brush up against my back. Thankfully most things are pretty--

[[and then he pauses, blinking]]

...Yuugi-kun's grandfather's game shop...?

[[and indeed, there it was. In the middle of an intersection. With the "closed" sign showing....]]

[Unfortunately, Bakura's idea of "a lot of space" isn't quite the same as L's. The detective is a habitual and largely oblivious encroacher. When Bakura halts his steps, L bumps against the very back that Bakura wants to protect and recoils, not nearly as interested in the game shop as Bakura seems to be.]

Don't stop that way because you saw something to do with games.

[shiromadoushi]

[[There is a very sharp intake of breath as L knocks into him. It takes him a moment to compose himself because OW.]]

It's-- it's not that it's--

[[Deep breath. Ow. Ow. Dumb idea. Deep breaths move your back muscles. ]]

It's that it's Yuugi-kun's... and it's in the middle of the street....

[It sounds like he hurt him. Too bad he's so annoyed he practically doesn't notice.]

Do you need to stop and buy something, or do you think you'll last until after we've had pastries?

[For him to want to stop on the way, it needs to be awesome by his standards.]

It's not open... [[a soft sigh]]

Sorry... it was just startling... seeing something from home like that...

It happened to Light and I two days ago. I understand the sudden distraction, but if it's closed, there's not much reason to stay, is there? Unless the owner was in the habit of leaving doors unlocked, in which case I still want to move on.

[shiromadoushi]

Give me a minute... [[it's said softly, almost pleading. Because damnit, his back is still smarting. Going to slowly and VERY CAREFULLY start walking again...]]

What happened to you and Light?

[He's impatient, but he holds back for his friend's sake, waiting for him to recover.]

I found our handcuffs, and he found his father's police badge. It was an emotional day for him.
