Morning Training

Time: 6am to 9am
Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on April 24th.

[ Audrey's got a plate with some of the sweeter breakfast foods piled onto it - hey, that is just a stereotype - and she's sort of just walking around a little, trying to mingle and catch some idea of what's going on. It seems like the entire city's congregated here, for one reason or another.

Then she spots someone... a little strange-looking. But he also looks somewhat lonely, and something pulls her to him.

Her eyes narrow. Her gut leads her in strange directions at times - but it's seldom wrong. Slowly, she makes her way over, stopping completely when she's just a couple feet away.

She attempts a friendly smile. ]

Hey. Do you have any clue what this is? I've seen it over here before, but I haven't been able to really figure out the logistics of such a huge gathering. [ She sounds genuinely curious. ]

[Psii blinks up at the human woman from behind sunglasses (ones with red frames today). Still isn't used to strangers approaching him, though this human seems friendly (and harmless) enough.]

Is morning training. For those who want to learn about powers, or find partner. Or eat breakfast.

[ She nods thoughtfully as she sits down next to him, balancing her plate on one knee and tearing off a piece of pancake. ]

So what they do here- [ Chew chew swallow. ] What they do here is tempt you with food and try to play platonic matchmaker?

[ Audrey watches him closely as she rips off another piece. He's very... interesting to observe, to be honest. ]

[Psii notices that human isn't using nutrition tine or sustenance scoop either, and, with relief, sets his aside as well, and picks a bit of chocolate off a pastry.]

Am not sure what 'matchmaker' means.

[ So the lack of pronouns continues. Audrey can go with that. She's known plenty of people with little tics like that.

At his reply, she can't help a small, amused smile. ]

A matchmaker... Is basically someone who helps you find a significant other. They help you find your "match."

[ She eats another piece of pancake before giving him a puzzled look. ]

I'm sorry if I offend you, but- What's with the horns? [ She gestures to the top of his head. ] And your skin? It's gray. [ Very astute, Parker, she teases herself inwardly, then she turns her attention back to the... man? ]

You're not human, are you?

['Significant other'? Psii doesn't know what that means, either. 'Match' makes it somewhat clearer. Odd human idea of having only one romantic partner. He files information away and moves on, given that isn't interested in having even one.]

Am a troll, and am not offended. Is almost certain come from different universe. Definitely come from different planet.

[He edges another piece off chocolate pastry topping with claw, and eats it.]

[ Troll. That rings a bell. Mello mentioned trolls and aliens. Possibly something about the trolls being aliens? She isn't sure now - though this one certainly does look alien.

She'll be honest - his appearance is more than a little jarring. But he's nice enough that it really doesn't bother her.

Smiling as she watches him eat with his claws, Audrey takes another bit of her pancake, shifting her weight a little to get more comfortable. ]

My name's Audrey.

[ Nice and slow, Parker, she tells herself. Easy does it. Somehow she gets much the same feeling from this guy as she does from the Troubled, so the same technique should be applicable. ]

Am called Psii.

[Is almost embarrassing to be focus of so much attention from someone barely knows. He looks down at food before going on.]

You're from Earth?

[ Her smile just brightens. ]

Yes, I'm from Earth. What's your planet called, Psii?

[ A name. Names are good. Just keep it slow. ]

Was called Alternia. Hadn't seen it in hundreds of sweeps. Expect will never see it again.

[He toys with a piece of pancake, and glances up at her.]

In your world, did humans have space travel? Know many don't.

[ Perplexed, she tilts her head. ]

Sweeps?

No, we don't have space travel there. Well, I mean, man's been to Mars, but not any further.

I did meet someone who knew aliens though. [ She smiles a little and nods. Sometimes she wonders where Wesley is now, but she knows that he's at least happy. Everything else, really, is irrelevant when it comes to the Troubled. ]

[Right, humans use years.]

Sweep is approximately two human years.

Have been to edges of own galaxy. Was CPU of spaceship.

[ Audrey puts two and two together and figures out that Psii meant before that he's been away from his planet for... hundreds of years?

She gapes at him a moment, the rest of what he just said barely registering. CPU, she knows, is a computer term of some kind. What kind, she isn't sure; Audrey's never been the best with technology.

Is he- Could he be like me? she wonders, watching him a moment longer. Then she discards that train of thought. They're similar in that they've both been around for a much longer time than most of their respective races, but Audrey's sure that's where the similarities end. ]

Um... [ She has to take a moment to gather her thoughts. ] How were you a spaceship?

[ She's a little nervous about bringing up the length of time he's been alive. It would probably mean bringing up her own weird history, and Audrey isn't quite sure she's ready for that yet. Only certain people in Haven know the truth about her, and she's kind of enjoying no one in Death City knowing yet. ]

[Psii has told basic story often enough that isn't difficult by now.]

Was a mage in own world, but. Near bottom of hemospectrum. [This he has to think about to translate into terms human would understand.] Low caste. Was born a slave. Rebelled. As punishment, was put into ship, made to serve.

[He dips pancake piece in syrup and eats it.]

Don't feel sorry. Is over now.

[ Dammit, Psii, that's exactly what she was about to say. Her mouth had sort of opened in shock when she heard what he had to say, and now she snaps it back shut at his last words, trying to make sure her expression doesn't convey the intense pity she feels.

It's awful. ]

Well, you uh. You seem to have come to terms with it.

[ Or he might be repressing some deeper emotional issue tied with his enslavement... Audrey inwardly shudders at the word. It's horrifying to think about. He seems so nice, somewhat timid. To think of him being forced into some kind of warped servitude...

Her lips tighten, and she has to look away. ]

Are you... Are you glad to be here?

[Issues? You didn't see any issues.]

Am very glad to be here. Am dead in own world. But best friend is here, and almost all trolls considered family. Others, too, never would have known otherwise.

[Sollux and Aranea, for start.]

Can't change what happened. Have no choice but to go on.

[ Something's bothering her, and she just wouldn't be Audrey if she didn't at least try to bring it into the conversation. ]

Is there a specific reason you don't use pronouns? Like I, me, my?

[Says this mostly to buy time to find right words, though it's true. Psii's not sure a human could really understand.]

Wasn't supposed to think for self when was ship. System had... way of enforcing things like that. Could make it very painful if poked into sectors wasn't supposed to, or tried too hard to keep self separate from ship.

Know am free now. But still feel weird if use personal pronouns.

[ Her eyes narrow and her brow furrows as she listens, somehow catching waves of something. Audrey shifts where she's sitting slightly as she tries to translate it all.

Anger. Mostly anger. There's a slight cringing sensation, coupled with awkwardness.

It dies down after he finishes, and she stares for a second, trying to process what just happened. ]

But you- You still want to use them again.

[ Audrey's tentative when she says it. She knows - now - that it's a sore subject for him. ]

[Psii looks down at nutrition platter, definitely feeling awkwardness most now.]

Of course would like to. Know am weird. Especially to humans.

[Though most have been kind about it. And with trolls, they almost all understand if hear word 'helmsman.']

Can do it, if try. Just don't like how it feels.

[ Audrey squeezes her eyes shut and purses her lips, cursing inwardly for making any mention of what she felt. ]

I'm so sorry- I shouldn't have called attention.

[ She feels so badly for him. Listening to him talk about his mistreatment makes her ache. ]

I'm sorry, Psii. You're not weird. You're you, and that's really all that matters.

Don't feel sorry.

[Seems to say that a lot, and means it. Pity from humans is... slightly alarming.]

Am much better than when first arrived. SS--best friend--had to remind to eat.

[Strange almost-ache of being disconnected from ship has all but vanished, too, recurring only sometimes, and Psii can walk as far as needs to now, without stopping to rest unless is Shibusen stairs.]

And. Don't mind being weird. Would be illogical to object to fact.

No, I owe you an apology for making you uncomfortable.

[ It isn't pity, Psii, it's guilt. There's a fine line between the two, and Audrey crossed it.

She smiles brightly when he mentions his "best friend." ]

You have someone here that you know from home as well? That's good.

[ He's obviously very reasonable, though maybe a bit naive. She'll have to make sure she keeps an eye out. If the Troubles have followed her to Death City, she'll most likely find Psii affected by them. The idea has her on edge. ]

[Psii hunches shoulders uncomfortably at repeated apology.]

Is all right. Really.

[But he relaxes when subject turns to SS.]

Yes. Has been here longer than self. Is called Signless. Think you would like him.

[Not just because thinks everyone would like SS, but because Audrey reminds Psii of him a little.]

[ Okay, okay. Changing the subject.

She smiles when he talks about Signless. Odd name, but she's heard odder. ]

Oh really? Maybe I should meet him sometime.

[ She picks at her plate. ]
