EVENT: The Great BREW Malfunction Pt II [OPEN]
Characters: Everyone and anyone
Location: Anywhere in Death City!
Rating: PG-13
Time: July 16 to July 18th
Description: And then it gets worse.
By now, no one is popping in and out of existence, but that's hardly any consolation when odd things keep happening.
At first it's not that bad. An innocuous item or two shows up. Something harmless wanders around that you're sure has never been in Death City before.
By the second day, bigger and more dangerous things start showing up and by the third...
Well.
As long as you don't mind the giant pieces of debris or creatures blocking the road or the sky, it's not that bad, right?
((OOC: List of canon items and creatures arriving can be found here. Remember, the list only tells you where they initially show up. They'll probably move on soon enough to a new location.
Remember to put Character | Location | OPEN/CLOSED in your subject!))

[Action]
He tilted his head sharply at Light's pause, as if concerned that no answer would come, and when it did, it sufficed. They agreed that something that would benefit the detective was, indeed, good.
"Within a week, I think," he replied, revealing that he wasn't in fact positive. Results varied, and his eyes had been severely damaged. "But Light... if I'm going through with this, you can't leave. You have to be there before the surgery, and after the surgery, and you can't let them interfere with any aspect of it."
To whom "them" referred must have been obvious, as was L's forced-authoritative laying down of the terms. Under bandages and sedation, he'd go from "blind, but relatively capable when it suited him" to "weakened and very, very easy to kill, when it suited those who would rather see him dead." And that list was no longer as clear-cut as it had once been.
[Action]
"I don't have to do anything." he countered. "Do you really think I'd be stupid enough to allow my time to be wasted twice?"
Leaving the question to hang, he moved to brush past L back into the living room with intentions of going to the kitchen.
[Action]
That was the impression he'd gotten, after all, paranoid to the last and with little reason to believe otherwise.
"I don't want surgery, Light... I'm doing it because it will help me be your partner to the very best of my ability. You can repay that sentiment by making sure I get home safely, right?"
[Action]
"If they're paying close enough attention to know that we've kept our partnership ongoing, then I'm sure they're paying close enough attention to know we've gotten back in contact and upended their 'plan'. And the fact they haven't acted says pretty clearly, to me, that they don't care what happens next."
The explanation was brusque...maybe a bit cruel to hear if L had been holding out even vague hopes of his successors having a veiled agenda in his favor. But it was how Light saw things. For a moment, the only sound in the kitchen was the sound of orange juice being poured.
"I don't plan on going anywhere." he said as he put the carton away again. "Frankly, the sooner this entire ordeal is over with, the better."
[Action]
It wasn't so much cruel as effective. Dwelling would solve nothing, and Light's statement was decidedly forward-thinking. Better to plan for the future than dread the next blow from a disgruntled former successor.
"At any rate, we have a few days and it's important to prepare. You should go to the store and purchase the following: eclairs, black cherries, sweet tea, ice cream in mint-chip and praline fudge, croissants, cream puffs, and sugar cubes, of course..."
[Action]
"I said I'd be here to help you get around, not that I'd cater to every demand you made."
[Action]
"Look who's put out at a simple request. You should be thanking me for consolidating my requests in advance, so as not to be more of a burden than necessary when I'm healing."
Re: [Action]
With that, he considered the matter settled and drank off the juice he'd poured himself before setting the glass in the sink and moving to leave.
[Action]
Then why am I allowing him to?
He reached for Light's hand, casually and smoothly snapping one cuff to his wrist and closing the other around his own.
[Action]
He didn't just--
Bringing his wrist up into his field of vision confirmed quite the contrary. There they were - the same cuffs that had been the bane of his existence for months. The ones that ensured that, at no time, were he and L more than six feet apart from one another. Of all of the things that this place had regurgitated to haunt him, he had assumed these, at least, would stay gone.
"Take them off. Now." he demanded in a lethal tone.
[Action]
"In hindsight, that was not logically motivated..." He said slowly, almost dreamily. "Because, while I found our handcuffs, I haven't the key..."
[Action]
He drew a breath that shuddered with fury before abruptly continuing in the direction he'd been going, yanking L along for the ride whether he liked it or not.
[Action]
He staggered on his skinny legs to keep from toppling as Light dragged him along, wrapping the chain several times around his hand to keep from tripping over it. "Where are you going?" he demanded, not particularly relishing the idea of careening into something or someone.
[Action]
"To find something to take these off." he said, heading directly for the elevators without leaving L room to protest. As far as Light was concerned, he could either follow him inside, or take his chances out here when the cart left without him but took the chain with it.
[Action]
"That won't work, you'll lose your arm, certainly," he said, looking horrified as he misunderstood the situation fantastically.
[Action]
[Action]
"That hurt," he whined, rubbing a newly bruised elbow and looking wounded. "You're just trying to torment me, now, you know how I feel about elevators."

With all of the odd requests and needs the residents had in this city, surely not many people would raise a brow about detaching two people handcuffed together. Especially if L readily admitted it had been an accident.
....which he had better.
Rather than hand L any ideas for how to complicate things if he hadn't already been considering them, Light remained tight-lipped and silent for the brief descent from the sixth floor down to the first. When the doors parted to allow them exit, he allowed a brief moment for L to stand of his own accord before stepping out.
From the security desk, the guard eyed the two strangely as he looked up from filling out his hourly log.
[Action]
He strode up to the security desk, making a point to bump into it. On the wrong side.
Poor, poor blind guy.
"Excuse me, there was some trouble we had, upstairs in our room...? You wouldn't happen to have a key for handcuffs, would you?"
[Action]
"Umm..." he began, stifling a chuff of laughter. "Not on me, no. I could probably call a locksmith maybe...?"
He was already fumbling for the phone directory as Light gave an open sigh of disgust.
[Action]
[Action]
As it was, he could do little but fume, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he turned his back both on L, and the guard, looking for something - anything, really - to focus on instead.
His eyes skated with idle interest over the slope of the staircase that led to the second floor, the pastel paintings of landscapes lining the wall, and--
He did a double-take at the nest of spanish moss that one of the lobby's potted plants was nestled in where something that didn't belong hung out in plain sight. Someone's wallet, maybe...?
[Action]
Needless to say, he was still getting the hang of many aspects of it.
Unaware for the moment of where Light's attention had strayed, L leaned over the desk, helpfully recommending Death City's best locksmiths with a disturbingly informed memorized base.
