EVENT: The Great BREW Malfunction Pt II [OPEN]

Characters: Everyone and anyone
Location: Anywhere in Death City!
Rating: PG-13
Time: July 16 to July 18th
Description: And then it gets worse.

By now, no one is popping in and out of existence, but that's hardly any consolation when odd things keep happening.

At first it's not that bad. An innocuous item or two shows up. Something harmless wanders around that you're sure has never been in Death City before.

By the second day, bigger and more dangerous things start showing up and by the third...

Well.

As long as you don't mind the giant pieces of debris or creatures blocking the road or the sky, it's not that bad, right?

((OOC: List of canon items and creatures arriving can be found here. Remember, the list only tells you where they initially show up. They'll probably move on soon enough to a new location.

Remember to put Character | Location | OPEN/CLOSED in your subject!))

The small, unimportant sound of metal securely latching into metal, and the cold kiss of it on his skin was more than enough to halt Light mid-step.

He didn't just--

Bringing his wrist up into his field of vision confirmed quite the contrary. There they were - the same cuffs that had been the bane of his existence for months. The ones that ensured that, at no time, were he and L more than six feet apart from one another. Of all of the things that this place had regurgitated to haunt him, he had assumed these, at least, would stay gone.

"Take them off. Now." he demanded in a lethal tone.

L blinked several times, as if surprised by his own action.

"In hindsight, that was not logically motivated..." He said slowly, almost dreamily. "Because, while I found our handcuffs, I haven't the key..."

Light's eyes widened in disbelief. Not that it was, by far, the most impulsive thing he'd ever seen L do, but all the same.

He drew a breath that shuddered with fury before abruptly continuing in the direction he'd been going, yanking L along for the ride whether he liked it or not.

L wasn't certain about the result he'd expected, but he fully realized that this one wasn't particularly surprising.

He staggered on his skinny legs to keep from toppling as Light dragged him along, wrapping the chain several times around his hand to keep from tripping over it. "Where are you going?" he demanded, not particularly relishing the idea of careening into something or someone.

If only L had thought of that before placing them both in this situation.

"To find something to take these off." he said, heading directly for the elevators without leaving L room to protest. As far as Light was concerned, he could either follow him inside, or take his chances out here when the cart left without him but took the chain with it.

L dug his heel in.

"That won't work, you'll lose your arm, certainly," he said, looking horrified as he misunderstood the situation fantastically.

"Get in here." was the hissed reply, as Light gave the chain a sudden, tremendous yank.

It was enough to pull the blind detective over the threshold of the elevator before the doors closed, and to send him sprawling at Light's feet.

"That hurt," he whined, rubbing a newly bruised elbow and looking wounded. "You're just trying to torment me, now, you know how I feel about elevators."

"Just like you know how *I* feel about the handcuffs." Light groused, punching the lobby button as the doors swiffed shut on the two men.

"I didn't think it through, and you are apparently never going to let me live it down," L scoffed, sounding anything at all but sorry, stiffening as the elevator started to descend but making no move to actually stand up. "It was a moment of panic. Much like this one."

"That's your problem." Light informed him, already mapping out an agenda to soothe himself.

With all of the odd requests and needs the residents had in this city, surely not many people would raise a brow about detaching two people handcuffed together. Especially if L readily admitted it had been an accident.

....which he had better.

Rather than hand L any ideas for how to complicate things if he hadn't already been considering them, Light remained tight-lipped and silent for the brief descent from the sixth floor down to the first. When the doors parted to allow them exit, he allowed a brief moment for L to stand of his own accord before stepping out.

From the security desk, the guard eyed the two strangely as he looked up from filling out his hourly log.

"It's our problem, because like your laundry, we are both wearing it," L hissed, straightening with as much dignity as he could muster (not much at all) and pushed past Light as the elevator doors slid open.

He strode up to the security desk, making a point to bump into it. On the wrong side.

Poor, poor blind guy.

"Excuse me, there was some trouble we had, upstairs in our room...? You wouldn't happen to have a key for handcuffs, would you?"

The guard, still trying to take in the ridiculousness he'd been presented with out of the blue shifted his eyes first to the, apparently, blind man at his desk, and then to the decidedly-healthier looking man on the other end of the length of chain between them.

"Umm..." he began, stifling a chuff of laughter. "Not on me, no. I could probably call a locksmith maybe...?"

He was already fumbling for the phone directory as Light gave an open sigh of disgust.

"There. Help is on the way. You're welcome," L said, assuming that the problem was solved and that the offer was serious and would go into immediate action. "Then we can go back upstairs, and you can have another little drink In the kitchen."

Light wasn't particularly in the mood for a drink. What he was in the mood for was knocking that smug tone of voice and expression right off of the detective. Which, had they not been standing in front of the man serving as Fatality Condominiums' direct line to the police, might have been a plan he'd put into action immediately.

As it was, he could do little but fume, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he turned his back both on L, and the guard, looking for something - anything, really - to focus on instead.

His eyes skated with idle interest over the slope of the staircase that led to the second floor, the pastel paintings of landscapes lining the wall, and--

He did a double-take at the nest of spanish moss that one of the lobby's potted plants was nestled in where something that didn't belong hung out in plain sight. Someone's wallet, maybe...?

Like most people who were either handed things or took what they wanted, L wasn't the best at knowing when he was pushing them too far, or recognizing when it could cost him. It was only recently that he'd been in any kind of position to lose a personal connection because he behaved viciously, dishonestly, or just downright poorly.

Needless to say, he was still getting the hang of many aspects of it.

Unaware for the moment of where Light's attention had strayed, L leaned over the desk, helpfully recommending Death City's best locksmiths with a disturbingly informed memorized base.

"Is this an issue you guys run into often?" the guard asked, no longer trying to hide his amusement as he grabbed up a pen to jot down the names L was rattling off.

Light inwardly cringed, deciding that leafing through a stranger's wallet to pass the time would be a suitable distraction from the trainwreck nearby after all as he leaned down to take the thin leather case between his fingers.

It would be easy enough to explain away if he were questioned, he decided. He was doing nothing more than seeing if the owner's identification and contact information was inside so that they could have what was theirs returned to the-

The thought derailed itself as he flipped it open and found himself staring at a face that was far too familiar. One that he had not seen in years. His father's features stared back at him, frozen in time, and wearing their usual look of hard-edged seriousness that Light had come to associate with the face of justice from a young age.

Why was it here...? Why had it been left somewhere so deliberate as if meant for him to find?

Why...?

The world around him began to haze into greys and feel as though it were falling out from beneath him.

"All I'm saying is that for handcuffs, it's better to call Mr. Grieves. The Bladeplot Brothers are good with custom work, but I would say that I am uniquely qualified to know that Grieves is the man for the job..."

L meant that he had been a pair of handcuffs when he had arrived in Death City, but the inferences doubtless added to the guard's amusement.

Light's silence, including the lack of indignant sounds, were enough to distract him from their embarrassing business. The chain slackened slightly, and he turned his head toward his partner.

"Light?"

Had he been confronted by this on its lonesome, it would have been badly jarring, but he might have quickly recovered and pocketed the police badge while assuring anyone who asked in a steady voice that he was fine. He knew exactly who it belonged to, and he'd be sure to get it back to them when he saw them next.

As it was, this unwanted relic turning up alongside everything else he'd put up with lately, Light found it hard to wrap his head around. His chest tightened as something threatened to tear out of him...something not even Light himself particularly knew how to prepare for.

Fainting. I think I'm fainting. he thought with a detached sort of giddiness as the floor floated up to meet him.

Whump!

It was not a body that struck the floor, but a book spine-up, accompanied by the jingle of Light's half of the chain which no longer had an occupant in its cuff.

If L was good at anything, it was wearing people down until they cracked. As the chain went completely slack, the cuff clattering to the floor, he knelt almost on reflex, assuming that Light was on the floor, going to be sick, perhaps even unconscious.

It was true that L hadn't been letting him get much sleep lately.

His fingers met with a leather cover and smooth, dry pages rather than Light's skin, hair, or clothing.

The guard leaned over the desk to get a better look. "Your Weapon?" he asked, squinting at the book.

"Evidently..." L murmured, lifting it and leafing through its pages, finding the pen and gripping its slender body.

"It also looks like a Chief Soichirou... Yagami... dropped his badge at some point," the guard added helpfully.

"Does it?" L asked, lifting that in his other hand and accepting it as the explanation for Light's momentary lapse in control over his physical form.

Taking on a task as demanding as cleansing the world meant that many things had needed to take a back seat. The things that Light Yagami might have mourned and regretted, Kira had needed to turn a cold shoulder to in order to keep moving forward. Most had interpreted Light's frosty distance as being admirable...a son who, in spite of his own grief, saw the importance of remaining stoically strong for his mother and sister's sake.

The truth was, Light had abruptly closed the book on the incident shortly after his outburst in the hospital room. Any way of explaining Soichiro's death away as a valid sacrifice, he had fed himself until the pain had ebbed and he felt that he had risen above it.

Dad... you idiot, why didn't you just let Matsuda take the damned eyes?

The brief domain he'd held over his transformation wavered, and then slipped away from him completely as he abruptly re-assumed his human form, stepping immediately away from L and the guard.

The handcuffs, the operation, none of it mattered anymore. He needed to get away.

The other man's hasty retreat wasn't quite the reaction L had been hoping for.

"Hey, Light..." he said softly, almost gently, though he had no earthly idea how to offer comfort or reassurance. "I... this is good, it means that we can still be partners," he offered, trying to focus on the positive, holding the police badge delicately between his thumb and forefinger.

Light, for the moment, was completely immune to anything L might say, reassuring or otherwise. If only for the fact he could not hear over the low whine in his ears that continued to command him to retreat. He did not speak, or look at either of the men as he hastily left the lobby, eyes burning and prickling.

L had seen Light furious, and he'd seen what certainly passed for sad and frustrated, but this was entirely new. The distant shock and strange, deliberate retreat was disconcerting. Rising quickly, he followed the other man, weighing his options.

It's so easy to say that his father's death was his fault, and that if it would make him so sad, he shouldn't have let it become possible...

Light was moving quickly, but loudly enough for L to follow at a similar speed. When he caught up, he grabbed Light's hand, pushing the badge into his palm, firmly wrapping his fingers around it, and stepping back to allow Light some space.
