Morning Training Log!

Location: Training Ground, Shibusen
Rating: PG-13 for violence of the training sort
Time: 6am to 9am
Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on May 4th.

[Even as Rise's been working hard today, with Kanji there she knows she should help to keep an eye on him if only to take some of the weight of worry from Naoto.

Not that it would. She knows Naoto'll worry no matter what. But she's worried about him too.

And so, while she has spare moments where she can help at the SEES area anyway, she goes to check in on him]

Hey. How're you feeling?

...Glad not to have my face wrapped up. I kept tellin' 'em my eyes're fine and they were freakin' out too much. Clinic's fulla paranoid people.

[He bent close to his work and bit off the end of the thread, tucking it into the seam to hide it. That glove joined its buddy on the 'finished' pile, marking his last mending project for the day.]

Other than that, fine.

[He nodded.]

So Cupid gave me a pretty good idea about this shit goin' on in Death City. She says some kinda meeting with the heads in the city to talk 'em through this stuff might help out a little. I was just thinkin' of screamin' at 'em until they listen, but they've been hurting people and not pullin' their punches...

Kanji, they did what they felt was right. Better that they were over-cautious than not cautious enough, especially when it's something like your eyes.

[And she's sure he's heard this before already, but she's not going to let him play this down too much.

Though she frowns a little as he begins to talk about arranging meetings]

Well, I think she has a point. If we are going to do anything, we should do it diplomatically - yelling at people's only going to make things worse. But...are you sure you should be thinking about this right now? I mean, if you need the rest of us to take care of things for a while, you can tell us. I might be new to this but that doesn't mean I can't help.

[He shook his head.]

I can't just sit here and let SEES stagnate any more than it all ready has. We had more members in the Investigation Team than we do in SEES right now.. y'know that?

The people that can this group before... they had their shit together. They knew how to run somethin'. So SEES was real big, people knew each other, and SEES got shit done. For the last month or so, not so much. BREW kept sending people home.

So I can't just let it all sit, Rise. I can't just sit while everyone else pulls the ropes. Me and Naoto have to put our heads together and pull up our britches, get this group doing what the founders wanted us to do in the first place. We're small... but if the current-standing Leader's any indication, you can be small but mighty.

[A pause.]

...Uh, d-don't tell her I called her small.

[She fell quiet at his speech, somewhere between impressed and aggravated all at the same time. She could see his point, but at the same time was any of it worth him making himself even worse?

But right away, she could see part of the problem and she wasn't going to pretend she didn't]

But it's not just you and Naoto. I mean I get it, okay, I get that you're both stubborn and neither of you will admit it when things are too much but you already have other members who are willing to help. And there are other people here who will want to join - I've been helping out here all of one morning and I already talked someone into signing up. So don't sit there and talk like the weight of it is on your shoulders alone when there are people around you both who can and will help if you'll let us.

[Her resolve wavered, then, just a little as she continued]

I've been here barely a week and already I've seen you get badly hurt. So for one, what's the point in insisting it's all on you and Naoto if it means the rest of us are stuck if something else happens? And two, do you think any of us wants to see you make yourself worse because you're taking on too much too soon?

[He clenched his jaw. He never really thought he'd be leading SEES when he signed up to join the group, yet here he was trying to figure out what to do. Rise was right, and he nor Naoto should be shouldering all the weight when they had numbers, albeit small, to achieve far more than even he thought.

So he sighed quietly, rubbing the back of his head.]

I don't want what's goin' on to get worse, but I also don't want it gettin' worse because I'm all busted up.

But... damn it, you're also right. We all gotta flex our brains a little bit and come up with a plan. I like the 'community meeting' idea. Think I wanna go through with it, but we gotta meet up when I don't feel like fresh hell to work out how it's gonna go.

Then that's what we'll do. Once you're feeling better, we can bring everyone together and talk through how this is going to work.

[At least he was accepting what she'd said, or appeared to be. There was more she could do, of course, but that was something she wanted to do without leaning on Kanji and Naoto for it. To show that the rest of SEES were just as willing and ready to help.

And if anyone disagreed, well, she'd have a few stern words for them.

But she would also accept that it was Kanji and Naoto running things, which was where her next point came from.]

In the meantime, if there's anything you need any of us to do, just speak up. You might as well use those of us you have.

...A'right. Thanks, Rise.

[But in the interim, hmm. He had to think.]

I think in the meantime, uh, we gotta figure out whose ears we gotta perk up. H-how do I put it...

Say someone we can't stand walks up to me and tells me to like 'em. That shit ain't gonna fly with me, y'know? But if someone walked up to Senpai, stated their case, and he went to tell us all about the talk, we'd listen a little better right?

[His reasoning stopped them from dumping Namatame into the TV, that's for damn sure.]

[She thought for a moment, trying to unravel what Kanji meant before replying]

So in other words, we need to find the people who'll listen to us, and who have enough influence over everyone else that they can let them see our side of the story without making them more upset?

[Though she wasn't sure who that would be, exactly. This wasn't a small group like the Investigation Team, after all, at least as far as she could tell]

Well, maybe we start with the people who like us already. I mean, what we really need are people who aren't Guests or connected to Shibusen but who like us being here. If we can get them to defend us, that's an easier start than trying to figure out who might be able to influence the most people...right?

[Path of least resistance and all. Citizens would be more likely to listen to other citizens, at least she figured]

Oh. Yeah... trick is tryin' to find the people that don't hate our guts. I mean, a lotta places still hire Guests and have no problem with us, but the Average Joe is ready to knock our lights out when they so much as see us.

We'll do that, then. Work out who ain't out for our heads. Think you guys might be up for some old-fashioned investigating?

Like you even need to ask. And hey, at least this time I won't keep getting sidetracked by people trying to bug me about being Risette.

[Her tone light, but with serious intent behind it]

And actually, I was going to suggest we start with the people still willing to hire us. And I meet a lot of people where I work anyway so I can probably scope them out, figure out the ones who stick to the native maids and those who are willing to give Guests a chance.

[A nod and a grin. This was making more sense as this goes.]

Cool! A spy dressed up like a maid. I'll check some people out at the bakery and Yesterday's Magic, maybe ask Naoto to look up folks who hit up the Agency.

I think we got ourselves a little somethin' goin here! 'Bout damn time... the city turns to shit, especially at night.

[She couldn't help but giggle at the way he phrased that first part]

Well you know, I don't think meido spy has ever been done before. Who knows, maybe there's something to it.

[And the light teasing continued now that they seemed to have a clear goal, now that the worry was fading just a little]

See, this is what you need me around for. Keeping you guys on the right path is kind of my job, after all.

Yeah, yeah... [But he was sounding a little more lighthearted now.]

What'd I tell ya? Not everybody BREW drags out here's gotta know how to throw a right hook or hold a sword, yeah?

[He turned his head when he heard someone blow a whistle. Looks like that was the announcement of the last half-hour of training before everybody was dismissed. He nodded to her, then.]

Ahh, I should probably get a little more productive before they kick us outta the park. Y'wanna squeeze in a little resonance practice?

Yeah, all right. You were right all along.

[But she looked just a little more reassured than she had before. Even though she'd been the one to boast about her role, it helped to ave someone else confirm that her role actually mattered.

She, too, looked up as she heard the whistle, already thinking towards what she had to do after training was over. But her attention was soon drawn back by Kanji's question, a mix of caution and surprise in her expression]

Wait, is that okay? I mean, you're still getting your strength back and even if you weren't, well...

[And there was the rub. The one person she would feel somewhat at ease in opening her soul to was the one person she didn't really feel she should be asking for help.]

I'm still a little sore, but it ain't like it'll cut into my resonance much. It'll be easy, since we know each other, yeah?

[He set his work aside and blew out a breath of exertion as he pushed himself to his feet, clenching his jaw to bite back the discomfort there. Naoto'd told him 'first wince and it's straight home with you'... and he wasn't in the mood to head home just yet!

Felt good to be back on his feet, though. He extended a hand to her and nodded.]

Done it before?

But...won't Naoto-kun mind?

[She feels bad about practising with partnered Meisters anyway but Naoto and Kanji are something of a special case.

Still, he was speaking to confirm the suspicion she'd had, that she'd find it less uncomfortable with someone she already trusted.]

A little, yeah. Still trying to get used to that whole, someone's touching my soul thing but at least I'm not accidentally disrupting the link every time so that's something?

[And even that she was starting to understand, if only she could figure out how to turn it in a direction other than at the person trying to resonate with her]

[He shook his head.]

Uhh, well, she draws the line on me askin' for a second partner since I can resonate with two weapons at a time, but somethin' I learned here's that you gotta learn to be able to resonate on the fly with a buncha people. Toughens up the soul, too.

[If she didn't know they were dating, she might have been inclined to explore that resonating with two weapons at once part. As it was, she figured that was better left undisturbed.

Besides, there was something else she figured he could help her with even if it wasn't actual practice]

It's really that important, huh? Then...how do you get used to it? How do you stop thinking about the fact that someone's touching your soul with theirs? I mean, I can do it but I know I'm probably holding myself back by thinking that way. I just don't know how to stop finding it weird.

[He rubbed the back of his head.]

To be honest, it never really goes away unless ya make it go away. S'why a lotta people wanna practice with other people, learn to get used to pressin' up against different personalities and stuff.

I had a helluva lotta trouble resonating when I got here. I didn't like the idea of people touchin' the soul, finding out about all the stuff I fought to get comfortable with for half a year and find it gross or... or weird.

But somethin' I learned here is that people are seriously cool. Different. People don't even bat an eyelash about my hobbies here. [He gestured to the mostly-finished stack of clothing in need of repair.]

So... y'just need time, y'know? Helps to stick with a small circle of people that you can resonate with without much of a hitch, then reach out from there.

[Just hearing that Kanji had struggled with the same thing she was fighting with now was enough to make her feel a little better, more assured that she wasn't a complete failure for not getting it right away.

Wasn't going to stop her from wanting to push past it as fast as possible. But it was something.]

Yeah...I guess that's it. Just the idea that people can see the real me so easily...but you're right. I can't let that get the better of me. I just have to try harder not to let it bother me.

[Like she could just switch that off]

Heh. There ya go!

I know Naoto says no second partners and all, but I think once I bounce back from all this bandaged-up shit I wanna give a dual resonance mission a shot. I think it'd be real smooth since we know each other from home, maybe get a kishin egg souls under your belt.

[Even if she didn't know about Naoto's resistance to Kanji taking on a second weapon, she'd be wary of accepting; knowing as she did that the rule was in place, she was even less inclined to think it a good idea]

I don't think that's a good idea. Even ignoring the fact that Naoto wouldn't like it, you guys have a good thing going. I mean, you have that whole perfect resonance thing going on and everything. Besides, I still only vaguely know what I can do...I'd only end up holding you guys back.

Perf- ...oh. [He looked up.]

Uh... Guess I didn't really think of it that way. -- And cut that shit out! You're only gonna hold people back if you keep thinkin' it. That's...

[A pause, and he looked away.]

That's actually what kinda held me back for a while. I kept thinkin' if I push too hard, a rejection's gonna happen and I'll burn the shit outta my hands, and a Meister with bandaged hands can't do a damn thing to help.

So I just, y'know, let it happen. I opened up and all of a sudden Naoto turns into this big-ass arm cannon and lets loose a Megidolaon.

Yeah but it's kinda different with you and Naoto-kun anyway.

[After all, if any of the rest of the Investigation Team showed up? She'd probably open herself up to them in a heartbeat, given that anyone that might show up would have seen her Shadow anyway.]

Anyway, I wasn't talking generally. I just mean, I'm doing my best but you guys have been here way longer than I have. I'm not sure I can even catch up to you but right now? I'm only going to slow you guys down.

[And given what happened with this latest mission, Rise sure as heck wasn't going to put them at any further risk because she couldn't keep up]
