[Deryn's been wandering idly when she notices Aion by the sparring area, half transformed and alone. Sure, maybe she's still a little bit bitter that he stole her food earlier that day but she decides to approach him anyway.

Mostly because his weapon form seemed to be a sword and that interested her.]

Can you sword fight?
tuned_wrong: (cheer up loverboy)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
[He greets her with a tiny grin and gets up more straight.]

A bit. I learned how to do it back home as part of our training.
bellcaptain: (no you can't have my potatoes)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-06 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Only a bit, huh. You probably know more than me in any case.

[Still, being able to use a sword was probably be a useful skill, especially here.]
tuned_wrong: (silver lining on the horizont)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-06 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm~ Probably. [He tries to hide it but there is a certain pleased pride in his voice, even knowing that he isn't the best swordfighter around here by far.]

I didn't manifest any special talents so I was stuck with weapon handling a lot.
bellcaptain: (is that pie)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-06 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
Like... special demon powers? [She kind of thought they all had those.] Weapon handling isn't really a bad thing to know, though.

tuned_wrong: (my best theory)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-06 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Our powers tend to be pretty individual. My brothers have some pretty impressive ones, but the best I can do is a blast.

Using weapons can gave me an unexpected advantage at times.

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-07 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Because others don't expect you to be proficient with them? But still, a blast is still impressive. At least to a human.

[Deryn considers asking him to teach her how to fight with weapons since the best she can really do is shoot a pistol or handle a rigging knife.]
tuned_wrong: (silver lining on the horizont)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-09 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. [He smiles weakly. He often wishes for a stronger power so that he could do more, especially when the other Sinners got into trouble and needed help.

He looks at his 'sword' for a moment, smiling a touch bitterly.]
Most demons rely on their natural skills and instincts to defeat their opponents. Because of that I can get an edge by relying on weapons. Using them also helps me to learn not to let my emotions get the better of me.
bellcaptain: (alright noodles)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-09 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
That is barking convenient.

[Well, if he was good enough to get an advantage over demons who had powers maybe he wouldn't be a bad teacher. Couldn't be worse than Volger, in any case...

Besides, he needed to pay back for the food he stole from her.]

Would you mind teaching me, then? Not anything fancy, just enough to hold up in a fight.
tuned_wrong: (what the-)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-09 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
[For a moment he looks surprised. It's obvious he didn't expect a question like this.]

Teach you? Well, I guess I can show you the basics like how to hold a sword and not get it knocked out of your hand but it's demon style of fighting...
bellcaptain: (is that pie)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-09 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't mind as long as it's useful. Oh. Unless I have to be a demon to learn.
tuned_wrong: (my best theory)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-10 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
You don't. [He reassured her quickly, still frowning lightly. He had helped other younger demons practicing their swordplay before, but that had been in Pandaemonium and humans were in the end pretty difficult than most demons. Especially the wa they recovered and healed. He'd have to take that into consideration when they went at it.]

The demon way can be pretty much summed up with "whatever helps you win", so it can be pretty rough. But you don't have to be a demon to use it.
bellcaptain: (dinner is my favourite time of day)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-10 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I can handle it. [She's able to compete on even footing with boys who are older than her and sometimes even

beat them, she's pretty sure she can deal with this. Then again, climbing ratlines was probably different than learning sword

fighting meant for demons. Still, she's confident in herself enough.]

You can't improve if you do things that are too easy anyway.
tuned_wrong: (cheer up loverboy)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-10 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Her confidence makes him smile.]

Good. In that case I think I can spare a little time for the two of us every now and then. [He smiles.] Because it'll take longer than just a few rounds. How good are you with sword-fighting right now, would you say?
bellcaptain: (is that pie)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
[This makes her grin widely.]

I've had some training with fencing for-- [She pauses for a moment as she tries to mentally calculate.] -- several weeks. That ninny Volger hasn't really taught me much other than proper stances and techniques. I haven't tried dueling yet.

[Not that there was room in a tiny cabin for that anyway. But the thought of Volger makes her frown a little since her last conversation with him didn't exactly go that well.]
tuned_wrong: (I've got a plan)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-11 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Several weeks. [He nods, trying to calculate what that would mean if she were a demon from Pandaemonium, experience-wise. He doesn't comment on the "ninny", knowing that he called Duffau probably a lot worse when the duke hasn't been able to hear it (and sometimes when he could).]

Do you want to try it, then? We'll duel and I'll just test out how our skills compare to each other.
bellcaptain: (is that pie)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-11 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I suppose it won't hurt to try. [Deryn looks over her shoulder at the practice area to see if there are any spare swords there before turning back to Aion.] I'm guessing you'll be using your-- [she waves her arm a little] --uh, arm?
tuned_wrong: (get on top?)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-12 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
My arm? [He shakes his head and changes it back.] I won't, until I'm sure that I won't accidentally slice you to ribbons with it. It's not a game, remember? A small cut at the right place can end up deadly so we won't do any fooling around with real weapons until we know for sure that we'll both survive it with all our fingers still attached to our hands.

[He winks to show that he isn't picking on her.]

Besides, it's more fair that way.

bellcaptain: (dinner is my favourite time of day)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-13 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
[She takes his reasoning well enough.]

That certainly makes sense. Should we head over to the practice area then? I doubt this path makes a good place to fight.
tuned_wrong: (I've got a plan)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-13 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Let's. [He leads the way, leaving it up to her to choose a free spot for them while he goes and gets them a pair of practice swords. When he returns, he offers one of them to her, handle first.] There you go.
bellcaptain: (no you can't have my potatoes)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-13 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! [She accepts it and begins to go into the fencing stance that Alek and Volger taught before stopping and letting the sword drop to her side.]

But wait, this isn't like fencing at all, is it? Being a demon style.

[She stands there a little at a loss of what to do.]
tuned_wrong: (cheer up loverboy)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Not if you mean that fancy jump and poke style. [He holds the sword casually, raising it up lightly.]

We demons tend to use bigger and heavier versions of swords that are often upgraded for various uses. Most simply put, it's a style befitting a longsword. You can hold it with one hand or both, but I prefer the one with both hands since it gives you better control of your weapon.

Try holding it in a way that will allow yo to swing it with all your might.
bellcaptain: (what is it)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-14 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I see.

[Deryn shifts her stance a bit then holds the sword out directly in front of her with both hands.]
tuned_wrong: (gold and diamonds)

[personal profile] tuned_wrong 2012-03-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Good.

[He makes a smooth move and delivers a hit with his own sword that would knock it right out of her hand if it hits.]
bellcaptain: (you bumrag)

[personal profile] bellcaptain 2012-03-16 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
[The blow comes as a surprise and it causes Deryn to fumble a bit. She's able to keep hold of the hilt but not enough to keep the rest of the sword from tipping down towards the ground.]

Blisters!
