Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on Monday, August 30th.

[Neji's not surprised to see him and returns the mild greeting with a faint smile. A lot has changed in the past week, his reservations about Sasuke among them. It feels like all of them have grown closer somehow]

Good morning. I trust your mission went well?

Hn.

[ it's an agreement, and Sasuke's gaze sweeps out to the field, inadvertently looking for the slash of blond that is his partner's hair. ]

They've been giving us extra eggs, when we come back.

[ it would be a bad omen, if Sasuke believed in such a thing. ]

[Neji however, isn't so sure, and it shows in the way he glances sidelong in response to the information. That's never happened before]

They must really need more Deathscythes.

[And he really needs to get Lee out on the field more, but something's brewing further south from what's heard..]

Things could only be simple for so long.

[ not that Sasuke thinks they had always been simple. so much had happened— he recalls Naruto's kidnapping, the vector tails...

but it was very different, when their numbers were smaller. ]

Smaller numbers mean we need to hit harder.

[So Shibusen's running out of time, and they feel the strain that's losing veteran partnerships, that's BREW's instability and their tenuous existence. They might be well be handing out souls that'll vanish just as quickly as they're consumed, but it's a risk they're taking.

It doesn't bode well for victory]

And exercise more care.

[The world is beginning to look more and more like their own, and there's an ache in his chest that will never fully heal]

[ Sasuke understands the sentiment. with things coming down to the wire, they need to be fast and strong and smart. these are things Sasuke has been cultivating since he was young. it was harder with a parter like Naruto, reckless and rash, but to Sasuke, winning this war was all that mattered.

but after his conversation with Naruto the night prior— for the first time Sasuke was considering his future.

a heartbeat passes between them as he considers this before Sasuke glances back at the other shinobi. he has no capacity to understand what he might be thinking; they are far from being anything resembling that close, whatever this strange, tentative bridge between them is.

which brings him to one of the reasons he came by— but that, too, is difficult. Sasuke seems to hedge for a moment before speaking. ]

They were pleased with your gift.

[He feels Sasuke's eyes on him, but doesn't turn to meet his gaze until the Uchiha speaks again. It takes him a moment to recall those gifts, but he hums, faintly amused]

So they told me.

[But you didn't, he doesn't say. But he'd never been out for gratitude anyway, not when those gifts were meant to be a show of his own. Of the three of them however, he's indebted to Sasuke the most]

Sasuke has never been good with gratitude. he's aware that Neji may have given him those keychains as a thank you for picking him up from the station, for bringing the healer as soon as possible.

but the fact is, they represent much more to the young Uchiha. ]

Where did you find all of them?

[ it would be easy to mistake his question for all of the gifts. if Neji is at all perceptive, he'll know what Sasuke really means. ]

[It's the first thing that comes to mind, because the other gifts weren't exactly treasure hunts. Though Naruto's had been a special order. The smile is faint, more of a quiet softening of his expression as his eyes glance back out onto the field]

Lain was adamant about collecting them, and she managed to redeem a Roy keychain to complete the set. I.. have plenty of mementos already.

[ Sasuke only ever had a few pictures to keep as personal momentos. when he left Konoha, he left all of those behind, all the ties that grounded him to swathe himself in darkness and hatred.

his gaze sweeps down, his lashes cast small shadows on his face under the bright of the sun. ]

I didn't realize.

[ didn't realize someone would put the time into making them, into collecting them. it seemed like such a mundane thing, and with everyone who was around when they were made— it likely seemed so frivolous.

but now they were a handful of memories of people Sasuke could no longer and would likely never see again. his hand flexes, tightens on the sword as though it might bring him small comfort. ]

[Sasuke should really stop with that. While Neji's not directly watching him, he'd be remiss as a Hyuuga shinobi to still not be aware of everything around him. He knows Sasuke won't attack him and that his hand is never very far from his sword, but the movement, the tension he senses in the Uchiha's frame puts him a little on edge. A sword is a weapon after all, and his nagging survival instincts are well aware that Sasuke's betrayed them once before.

And he knows Sasuke will notice the way his own body edges into alertness- a subtle tension and shift in weight that prepares them for those hair-raising moments on the field.

Continuing the thread of conversation doesn't seem appropriate anymore, so he shifts it to match the rise in tension]

If you're looking for a spar, you'll need to try harder than that to catch me by surprise.

[ he would be a fool of a shinobi not to notice the subtle shift in Neji's demeanor. Sasuke also couldn't expect the other nin to understand the subtle differences in his own tension. the truth is, if he'd wanted to catch the Hyuuga off guard, he wouldn't have stopped at gripping his sword.

Sasuke pointedly lets his hand fall from the hilt of his weapon.

he doesn't look at Neji when he speaks; though there's something stilted and awkward about it, like he's forcing his shields down enough to get this out. ]

I don't have much to remember them by.

[ his hands fold into fists, despite himself, a bid for control of his emotions that threaten to kickstart into something chaotic and frightening.

he still isn't looking at Neji. ]

[Sasuke's hand drops and he's almost surprised. He'd expected the Uchiha to rise to the thinly veiled bait rather than respond. But perhaps he's thinking too much about their last encounter like that. For all that Sasuke's not an enemy, there's still that thread of competition, though more light-hearted in nature now, rather than setting out to prove anything.

But he relaxes, the quiet words equally unexpected and he smiles. He hadn't given those gifts for the gratitude, but to express his own. Naruto and Sakura were the type to return the sentiment, but Sasuke.. Well he's pleasantly surprised]
