Time: 6am to 9am
Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on Monday, August 30th.

The Watch

[Neji's been looking much better in the past few days, and it shows in the way he spends less time than usual here. It's a comparatively cool morning for the desert, after all. He's been at the office for a few days now, and just recently returned to patrols, all in all fully active for the Watch again.

But there's a fair bit he's missed and still catching up on, so if there's anything anyone needs or wants to bring up, now's the best time]

[ after the scorching heat of Egypt, Sasuke is very aware of the cooler temperature of the desert of Nevada. though he isn't cold, per se, his shirt is zipped to his chin as he makes his way passed the busy breakfast table toward the Watch. he makes a point to swing by here every training session, even if nothing has changed.

call it habit, or training.

as he draws up to the designated area, he nods to Neji. ]

[Neji's not surprised to see him and returns the mild greeting with a faint smile. A lot has changed in the past week, his reservations about Sasuke among them. It feels like all of them have grown closer somehow]

Good morning. I trust your mission went well?

[ it's an agreement, and Sasuke's gaze sweeps out to the field, inadvertently looking for the slash of blond that is his partner's hair. ]

They've been giving us extra eggs, when we come back.

[ it would be a bad omen, if Sasuke believed in such a thing. ]

[Neji however, isn't so sure, and it shows in the way he glances sidelong in response to the information. That's never happened before]

They must really need more Deathscythes.

[And he really needs to get Lee out on the field more, but something's brewing further south from what's heard..]

Things could only be simple for so long.

[ not that Sasuke thinks they had always been simple. so much had happened— he recalls Naruto's kidnapping, the vector tails...

but it was very different, when their numbers were smaller. ]

Smaller numbers mean we need to hit harder.

[So Shibusen's running out of time, and they feel the strain that's losing veteran partnerships, that's BREW's instability and their tenuous existence. They might be well be handing out souls that'll vanish just as quickly as they're consumed, but it's a risk they're taking.

It doesn't bode well for victory]

And exercise more care.

[The world is beginning to look more and more like their own, and there's an ache in his chest that will never fully heal]

[ Sasuke understands the sentiment. with things coming down to the wire, they need to be fast and strong and smart. these are things Sasuke has been cultivating since he was young. it was harder with a parter like Naruto, reckless and rash, but to Sasuke, winning this war was all that mattered.

but after his conversation with Naruto the night prior— for the first time Sasuke was considering his future.

a heartbeat passes between them as he considers this before Sasuke glances back at the other shinobi. he has no capacity to understand what he might be thinking; they are far from being anything resembling that close, whatever this strange, tentative bridge between them is.

which brings him to one of the reasons he came by— but that, too, is difficult. Sasuke seems to hedge for a moment before speaking. ]

They were pleased with your gift.

[He feels Sasuke's eyes on him, but doesn't turn to meet his gaze until the Uchiha speaks again. It takes him a moment to recall those gifts, but he hums, faintly amused]

So they told me.

[But you didn't, he doesn't say. But he'd never been out for gratitude anyway, not when those gifts were meant to be a show of his own. Of the three of them however, he's indebted to Sasuke the most]

[ conveniently, Sasuke looks away again once Neji has decided to glance toward him.

Sasuke has never been good with gratitude. he's aware that Neji may have given him those keychains as a thank you for picking him up from the station, for bringing the healer as soon as possible.

but the fact is, they represent much more to the young Uchiha. ]

Where did you find all of them?

[ it would be easy to mistake his question for all of the gifts. if Neji is at all perceptive, he'll know what Sasuke really means. ]

[ Oh look, Neji isn't going through his super thorough all-encompassing training regimen anymore. That means that this is an ideal time to approach him. Despite that she saw him all the time at the Watch HQ, it was always nice to talk outside. The weather is nice, and it's early enough that at least some relaxation can occur outside of hard work. ]

[ But, being Ghoulia, she has to start with business. Because she totally left the Watch later than Neji did and... ]

Good morning. [ A slight pause, enough for a response. ] I hope you'll forgive the stack I placed on your desk last night.

[He does leave the office earlier nowadays, mostly because of his Weapon's insistence on him needing more rest]

Ghoulia. [And he does wince a little, because it feels like all he's been doing has been paperwork lately] Well that's not surprising, given how long I was on leave. Hopefully I'll be able to get through most of it today before you're too much more efficient.

[ He does need more rest, and he has a lot of other things to do. Ghoulia, meanwhile, specializes in putting her brain to use and she puts it to use best while she's working. ]

[ And while sleeping. She even dreams of work, whoops. ]

[ She catches the wince, and offers a reasurring attempt at a smile. ] If it helps, over half of them are just signatures. I took care of what I could. I'd rather not be caught in the business of forgeries, of course.

[Well that's slightly better, but he still does need to read all of them so he knows what he's signing. Even if he is sure Ghoulia wouldn't hand him anything untoward]

I appreciate your hard work, Ghoulia. I suppose I deserve all of it, given you came back to the backlog of work I'd neglected while I recovered. Unfortunately, my shoulder wouldn't cooperate with me long enough to do even paperwork for awhile.

[Mami has heard about the Watch from some people around Death City, and she is more than a little interested in it. Which is why she has meandered her way over to this section of the morning training field and peers around for someone who can help her.]

Excuse me? Is there where I'm supposed to be to sign up for The Watch?

[It's rare that new people stray over to this area, but it's a pleasant surprise and Neji moves to greet the girl]

Good morning. I'm Hyuuga Neji, current commander of the Watch. You mentioned interest in joining?

[Mami clasps her hands in front of her, looking delightedly as Neji speaks to her.]

Ah! Yes, that's right, Hyuuga-san! I'm Tomoe Mami and I think I would be a good asset for your group, especially since patrolling is something I've been doing for years anyway!

[She looks young to his eyes, but he knows plenty about appearances in contrast to capability. This girl could be all of a thousand years old for all he knows.

But a smile tugs at the corner of his mouth, because hardly anyone addresses him in such a fashion anympre]

Impressive, Tomoe-san. You do sound well-suited. Do you have any combat training? It's not mandatory, but advisable.

[She nods energetically, striking a bit of a pose almost as if it were second nature to her.]

I have plenty of training in the form of actual combat! I think I'm a perfect fit!

[Neji hums his amusement, watching her move with all the energy one might expect from someone her age]

Very well, then. You do sound very well-suited. Is there a time of day you'd prefer working? I have a number of shifts open in different districts.

Well, I'm used to patrolling in the afternoon and late at night. If you have anything around then, I think that would be wonderful!

[Then maybe she can get a job during the day or something, yes.]

Then how does second shift sound? Hours are from 6 to 12 at night.

[Neji lifts a clipboard at his side to flip up a sheet and glance over the open spots for second shift]

That sounds absolutely perfect! And I'm more than willing to take on some extra shifts if you need them filled too.

[Okay, she's waaaay too into this patrolling thing.]

[He does smile this time, charmed by her enthusiasm and willingness to help. Yes, she'd fit right in]

I'll keep that in mind. For now, you might consider seeking out your zone leader Mello, and informing him of your new position. He'll give you a rundown of the area and what to keep an eye out for.

As well at some point, I'll need you to come by Headquarters to finalize a short bit of paperwork so I can ensure you're paid appropriately. Other than that, you're free to start as soon as you'd like.
