Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on June 4th.

[...well, she's never so much held a sword before, so right now she just stands there, holding the practice sword in front of her, her feet about shoulder length apart.] Alright, this seems fine...now what?

*Auron studies her for a moment.* That was to see how good your instincts are. *Which...sadly you need some work on.* Grip the blade tighter at the hilt and sink in your stance.

[...instincts? She sticks her nose up into the air, taking a hand off of the hilt to stick it into her chest.] Heh, I'm the best when it comes to th- [Okay, what, she brings her hand back to the hilt, squeezing her hands on it tighter, and actually looking as though she's falling back into her stance.]

She sounds like a charming young lady in her canon

Before I can teach you anything, you have to have a good stance. Everything you do in a fight relies on being centered. If I can get you off balance by nudging you with my practice sword here *which he holds up* then you won't be effective.

Oh she is a really charming person, you'd want to eat lunch with her

...so, what, do I just have to stay in place like this as you nudge me? Ha! That should be a piece of cake. I've seen tougher shit before, so this shouldn't phase me!

Glad you're so enthusiastic. *Without warning, Auron cracks his wooden sword against hers. If she really doesn't have a solid grip on that thing, it's going to fly out of her hand.*

[She definitely heard the cracking of the two swords meeting, seeing hers fly out of her hand as she sorta stares emptily into her open hands.] ...Oi! You could've given me a warning, retard!

[nofarplaneyet]

I thought you said you wouldn't be phased by this. *Auron gives a less than impressed glance at her from his single eye.* I asked you to stay centered and hang onto your sword. Since you couldn't do that, we'll have to practice with that for the rest of training. *Nope, he's not kidding either.*

[vulgaris]

[..wait, this guy can't be serious about that, can he?! She's practically pointing furiously now.] You can't expect me to actually work on that stupid stance for the rest of the time I'm here, do you!? It seems like a waste of time!

[nofarplaneyet]

*Auron points his wooden sword right in her face. His raspy voice drops even lower.*

Let me make something clear. You asked for instruction. I gave it to you. Now you're choosing to whine about it because it's not what you expected. Learning combat is neither easy nor fast. It's endless repetition so if you're ever in an actual combat situation, you'll come out alive.

You've been thrown into a city at war. I've been here long enough to see people die during missions and attacks by kishin eggs. If you're going to go on missions or even survive being attacked, learning how to fight is essential.

So it's up to you. You can walk away or you can learn.

[vulgaris]

[...so this is where being in this place leads her, huh? Getting lectured by some old guy...tch, how she wishes she had her Branch of Sin, but...

She lets out an elongated sigh, rubbing the back of her head as the lecture goes on. Man, how she's heard something like this before...]

...alright. Fine. Guess I'd be willing to learn about this...stance shit. And...sorry, for uh...complaining earlier. Guess I was a little frustrated myself about not exactly knowing anything.

*Since she apologized, Auron relaxed his expression.* That's fine. Trying to start something as complicated as how to fight can frustrate anyone. *He picks up her sword and hands it back to her.*

Let's try this again. Only this time, I'll get into a stance with my sword and you try to knock it out of my hands. Watch what I'm doing to prevent you from doing that.

[vulgaris]

[Oh, so now it was her turn to try and knock it out of his hand? Well, with a huff, she quickly takes back her practice sword, trying to actually ease into a stance once more.]

Alright, so, just gotta knock that sword outta your hand? And gotta watch what you're doing...alright. Just tell me when, and I'm ready and raring to go!

*Auron grabs the hilt with both hands and sinks into a stance. It's not extremely deep but he's also not standing upright. It looks like he's rooted to the earth with his back straight. He holds the sword out from him at a 45 degree angle.*

Okay. Try to knock it out of my hand.

[vulgaris]

[She's actually waiting for a moment, studying the stance he's in. Right...so, if that's all it takes for someone to hold a sword steady...she's making a mental note of it as she lunges forward, swinging the sword as hard as she can to try and knock it out of his hand.]

You know, for an old man, you're pretty wise about this sort of shit, aren't ya?

[nofarplaneyet]

*Auron grins as he take the hit square on his sword. Nope, not knocking it out of his hands. Granted she's just a newbie and doesn't have the kind of strength needed to do it, but it's good practice for her to see how to ground yourself.*

I'll take that as a compliment. When you're fighting, even though you're striking with just a tiny surface area, you're using your whole body. So when you want to defend, you use that same strength to defend. Most importantly, you have to be grounded, or having your feet touch the earth at all times.

[vulgaris]

[And thus she actually seemed to get knocked back a bit when she couldn't actually knock it out of his hands. A bit of a frown popped up as let out a bit of a scoff, looking at his stance as a whole.]

Right, right...jeez, this is so different then fighting back at home... [She nods, actually imitating his stance a bit for herself.] Like this, right? Feh, didn't think sword fighting was actually complicated...

That's better. Fighting with a sword seems very simple when you watch it but hard to grasp when you actually do it. I started when I was about 7 and I can't claim to know everything there is. There's always someone better and there's always something new to learn.

[vulgaris]

Hell, you've been doing this since you were seven? Shit, more power to you. And here I thought people started in their teens...heh, guess I shouldn't right you off as a dodgy old man in the first place. [Although she's still probably gonna call him that for a good while.]

Alright, so, just gotta keep this stance...oi, think you can strike against the sword once more? I wanna see if I can try and keep it in my palm instead of watching it spiral out into Shitville.

All right, let's give it a try. *He didn't offer to pull his punch either. She looked determined and, getting an idea for her temper, he thought she would be highly insulted.

He waited for her to sink into that stance and be serious. Auron swiped his practice sword across hers in a swift cut. Did she hang on this time?*

[Does she hold on? Well, her grip and her stance was pretty good, so she was sure it wouldn't fly out on her this time.

But while she did make sure the sword didn't fall out of her hand, she seemed to stumble a bit, the force of the cut knocking her back some.] Tch, so much for me trying to keep my damn ground...

You did keep a hold of the sword. That's good for a start. Trying to stand your ground when someone taller and stronger than you is attacking you will take a lot of practice. If you're up for it.

Heh, why do you think I'm here in the first place? I don't wanna sit around and be a useless piece of shit for the time I'm here- losing my fighting abilities back home means I gotta pick up some new ones, doesn't it? So hell yeah I'm up for this.

Good. Today we'll work on stances. Tomorrow we'll move from there.
