Will the real Morning Training please stand up?

Morning Training happens every day in the city, and most days get handwaved. This training log happens January 30th.

[Obito wasn't necessarily an adult, but he wasn't a child either. He could hold his own in a fight, and he didn't want to be placed with a bunch of little kids, so intermediate level it was!

He hadn't taken up a fighting stance. Just stood there with this hands in his pockets, hoping someone else would come along to give him some instructions. There was a few people here he recognized, but they seemed tied up already with others in their fights.]

So are we fighting with weapons here or...?

[Uchiha Obito. Neji makes his way over, accustomed to directing new arrivals that weren't sure of what to do. And while Obito wasn't quite new per se, he'd likely only recently fully recovered]

That depends on your preferred method of combat. As an Uchiha, your focus has been on your doujutsu and fire jutsu. Obviously however, we don't have those options here.

I know you possess basic taijutsu training, but it's your decision whether you'd like to focus on it, or just improve and take up proficiency with a type of weapon. In either case, you'll have a suitable instructor.

[Neji nods over to said division, where 'normal' weapons are lined with a few instructors to guide them]

Tenten is part of the Weapons Training division, and my teammate in our world. She specializes in that field.

[Obito shifted and stood a little taller when Neji approached. There was something about being around another member of an old Clan that caused Obito to feel he should stand on occasion. It was a little uncomfortable.]

So much for having a permanent sharingan. [He pulled his goggles down over his eyes.]

I should probably strengthen my taijutsu. It would probably help me most, until I get a partner.

[He brightens at the mention of Tenten. It was always a plus to know there was someone reliable (and familiar) to help with training.]

I'll be sure to check out her area next time. What can we do to work on taijutsu today?

[Neji nods, moving to stand opposite of Obito]

In that case, I'm here to instruct you. First, I'd like to sort out where it is you need improvement, and the best way to do that would be through a simple spar.

[He moves back a step, settling into a loose, and very Hyuuga stance] This is just to test your current skill level. However, don't worry about holding back. I don't know if Gai-sensei told you, but I'm a Jounin.

[And that combined with just being Hyuuga made him more than qualified to stand up to a Chuunin in a pure taijutsu contest]

[[ooc: I'm not great at writing spars, but I don't mind trying! I'd be just as happy to handwave and move onto the immediate aftermath as well if you wanted. Neji'll be primarily on defense- mostly redirecting his attacks using Obito's own momentum, evade, and block when necessary, and throw a few hits in just to gauge Obito's reflexes and adaptability. Just for reference if you want to skip through]]

[Obito feels a ripple of anxiety when Neji moves into position. He can't imagine this turning out well for him, but it's not like Neji was looking to put him to shame. He would just do his best and try to not completely fail.

Taking up one of the basic defensive stance, Obito quickly tried to decide how to best take someone like Neji down. He grimaced at Neji's proclamation of his rank. Yeah, this wasn't going to go well.] Let's just get this over with.

[His brain said that there was no way to win, but if he was in a life or death situation he couldn't give up. So, with that in mind, he tried to analyze the situation. Neji was taller, stronger, and undoubtedly skilled. If Obito was going to have the slightest shot, it would be using Neji's own height and momentum against him. He needed to throw him off somehow...

Argh, this wasn't going to work but he had to do something! Obito moved into action and just threw a punch Neji's way, aiming for the face. It wasn't a confident punch, and that was obvious no matter how anyone looked at it.]

[[ooc: Lol I suck at spars too. |D If you want to backthread this, I don't mind handwaving to Obito getting his ass handed to him. He's so bad with taijutsu. >.> ]]

[He doesn't use much actual force- just stands defensively and lets Obito come at him as much as he wants. Counters blows to gauge the Chuunin's adaptability, switches stances, and takes up some evasive maneuvering- circling and seeing how fast Obito can snap back and how well he can cover for the openings presented.

He engages the Uchiha briefly, swatting aside his punches through the gentle, guiding movements Jyuuken was characterized by. For a shinobi from a clan that is known to specialize in ninjutsu and doujutsu-specific genjutsu, Obito's got a decent handle on taijutsu.

As expected of a Chuunin and Uchiha, but it's still nothing compared to a Jounin Hyuuga.

Neji moves in and slams a palm flat against Obito's chest, taking the breath from his lungs and sending him flying a fair distance back. If the attack had chakra behind it, Obito would have at least one collapsed lung and be coughing up blood.

Neji straightens from his stance and nods to the fallen shinobi]

Not bad. As expected of an Uchiha, your movements have a higher focus on speed rather than power, but have achieved an admirable balance. Your balance however, needs work. While your movements aren't entirely predictable, you could still use some improvement in that area to remove the tells of your forms and better surprise your opponents.

You need to master the utilization of your body as a whole and improve your technique to match, but you have a good grasp on the basics.

[Obito was kidding himself if he thought he could out-maneuver a taijutsu master like a Hyuuga but he damn sure was going to do his darnedest if that's what it took. At first, it seemed like Neji really was just interested in seeing where he was as far as strength and skill went, so Obito quickly gained confidence and forgot his previous doubts. But as the session went on, Neji became a little more determined to push his limits, and at last, Obito was forced to the ground.

He certainly was glad no chakra had been involved in this brief encounter. He would have been dead pretty quickly if this had been a real fight back home. For the first time, Obito praised whatever deity that watched over their home had blessed Konoha with both the Uchiha and Hyuuga tribes in their numbers.

Obito lays there, momentarily stunned as he worked to refill his lungs with air. Neji's words are both impersonal and critical, leaving Obito's pride feeling a little bruised but generally accepting.]

Not gonna lie... That was pretty intense. [Obito takes a deep breath and pushes himself up into a sitting position.] So I need more training? Okay, I can see that.

Do you have an suggestions for working on balance, then? I can always come back and spar again, if you're up to offer pointers.

[Neji nods, watching Obito pick himself up, and considers it]

I was placed here to assist those in this division. If you'd like to spar and take advice from me, I'll provide it. I'm confident I could help you drastically improve your balance, full range of motion and coordination- although you may want to seek out either Kakashi or Gai-sensei to advance your taijutsu.

Our styles are different enough that I won't be able to teach you much. Instead, you'll be better off incorporating anything you learn from me with what you might learn from either of them.

[Oooh Ling hasn't seen this one before!]

With whatever you like! Look, that kiddo over there's using his sword [Ling nods at Emil] but I was just using hand-to-hand with that girl in the red.

What's your pick? I'm Ling Yao, by the way. I'm teaching this with that beautiful guy. The one who looks like a shampoo commercial. [He nods to Neji.]

[This guy seemed pretty cheerful and friendly. Obito offered him a slight, guarded smile.]

I guess I'm more interested in hand-to-hand. I'm pretty good with kunai and shuriken when it comes to weapons...

Nice to meet you, Ling-san! [He gave a slight bow of his head.] I'm Obito. Uchiha Obito.

[Looking over to where Ling pointed, Obito bit his lip and attempted to hold in a chuckle.]

Y-yeah. Neji is... He's actually from my village, back home.

Hi Obito! You're from the same village? Uwah, what're the chances. Does everyone in your village have such "smooth and silky shine"?

[Ling has discovered television since arriving, is it obvious yet.]

I like your goggles. If it's one panel though, is it still called goggles, or is it a mask? Or.... goggle?

[Obito coughs to hide a laugh. This guy...]

Oh, uh... no. His Clan seem to be particular about how they dress and present themselves but I'm pretty sure Neji is a special case.

[Oh, it's obvious. Television isn't unheard of in Obito's world, but the range of commercials and channels here boggles him just as well.]

Thanks! Yeah, these are goggles. [He reaches up and adjusts them on his head so the orange lens shines in the sunlight.] I don't think they call these anything different than goggles. My parents had these specially made for me, since it's important to take care of our eyes in my family.

[As good as it felt to get nice comments about his sense of style, Obito wasn't going to offer to let Ling try them out. It was one of the few things he had from home with him.]

Special case is right! Hehe. Oh wow, your parents had those made for you? [Ling whistles, impressed.] Neat.

I'm guessing you must be a family of heavy readers, then?

I really like 'em!

[Speaking of home made him a bit sad, but he knew his parents would be glad if they knew he was still cherishing the gift they gave him, even in this new world.]

Ah, actually, we're sorta like Neji's Clan. See?

[Obito lifted the goggles away from his eyes, revealing their colors. His left was black, his natural color, while the other was permanently stuck as a functionless sharingan--a red eye with a black, whirling ring. After allowing Ling a chance to look, he replaced his goggles firmly over his eyes again.]

It doesn't work here, but that's the Sharingan. It's a power only members in my clan can activate, under certain circumstances. It's really helpful in battle, making it easier to read movements and see through illusions!

[Too bad it didn't work here, though, Obito couldn't help but think.]

[Ling had to open his eyes and get down just a bit to see into Obito's.]

Oh, wow. That's so beautiful! It's like magic, isn't it? Gosh, what kind of place are you from!?

[Ling actually kind of has scary eyes. Obito's glad Ling keeps them closed most of the time.]

[He flushes just the tiiiniest bit at hearing that 'beautiful' remark. He's used to the sharingan being considered an object of awe and fear, not beauty.]

O-oh, it's... I'm not sure about magic or anything. It's doujutsu. [Couldn't get any more mundane for an Uchiha.]

We're from Konoha. It's in the Fire country. [Any more specific than that.... isn't possible. The world is the world where Obito comes from. Maybe some history could make up for that.]

We're just one shinobi village. Other countries have their own, and apparently, we're all buddies now for some reason. [He rolls his eyes at that.] We were at war with one another when I was brought here. I may not look it, but I'm at least a decade older than Neji. [... if you went by birth year.]

[So he's been told, and that's why he's always smiling with them to make up for it.]

The Fire Country? Hm-- wait? Didn't I meet someone from the Earth Country, here? I think it was Miss Toph.

Shinobi villages... at war? [Now Ling's expression becomes concerned and sympathetic. He can't help feeling a little twinge of worry for his own safety-- shinobi can't be trusted, it might be a ruse.]

That must have been tough. We have shinobi where I'm from, too, and they're part of our war as well.

I don't know anyone named Toph, but I'm not very familiar with people from the other nations, either. And I'm especially not friends with anyone from Iwagakura, the Earth country's ninja village. [In all honestly, Obito didn't want to be, either. There's great bitterness in his voice as he hisses out the name of the village, as if it's very name makes him sick.]

[He nods gravely.] Even when we're not at war, we aren't typically on good terms. It's for the best. If we made friends with all the other villages, it would be even harder to fight against them if our countries went to war and ordered us to fight.

Fighting is what shinobi are raised to do. We fight for our nation and for our village.

[That's just how the real world worked.]

[Ling looks quite clearly saddened to hear the younger boy say that, for once slipping and letting his emotions show on his face. Obito's words sound like a recitation of things he's been taught. It hits home for him very hard-- as he's dealing with unraveling the problems of having been born into a family that perpetuated such a system.]

[His own would-be best friend honestly believes that her purpose in life is to be a human shield for him, to throw her life away at any moment for the sake of saving his.]

Yes... that is indeed what soldiers are raised to do, and you're obviously well-trained.

But I think there could be a better way to live.

[Obito scratches at the goggle strap where it curves behind his ear. If he was so well-trained, he wouldn't have failed in his last mission back home. He should have managed to get out alive along with saving his friends. In the end, his death hadn't really changed anything he had wanted to about things back home. Ling's words are painful to hear.]

I'm not going to say you're wrong. I just know, you can't change anything with just words or wishes. You have to take action. And sometimes even that fails, as long as people aren't willing to consider what your actions were for.

[Obito clears his throat. It's a tough topic for him to talk about at length.]

It also helps if you can live long enough to get to doing those actions in the first place. And that's why I'm here to train. I've gotta survive if I'm ever going to make a difference here, right?

[Ling huffs, and he nods at the younger boy's words, recognizing the truth in them. He rubs his chin, surveying the horizon.]

Yes. I believe you're right. If change is going to happen in the Xingese way of handling the problems of government, then I must take action.

[Now he turns his attention back to Obito, regarding him with a wan smile.]

I suppose so, we'd both better train, so we live to see the day we can change our destiny, huh? Let's go, then!

.... The Xing-a-what?

[Well, whatever it was, it seemed that Ling was agreeing with him at least.]

Yeah... Change it.

[How funny to talk about living to change destiny. At home that was impossible. But here, there was hope.]

Okay! I'm good with a kunai and a fair few other weapons. What do you suggest, Ling-san?

Ahaha.... n-never mind-- it's not as important as training.

Kunai! Kunai it is then. Most of my work today has been hand to hand, so let's go for it. Show me what you've got. First one who stops the other's movements wins?

[ooc: um, do you want to write out the action or handwave? I'm good either way but since it's older, we might handwave (this time) and then Ling be like WOW OBITO YOU'RE REALLY AWESOME, good job! or whatever? Next time we can write a more detailed spar if you like]

Ah, okay.

[Ling's enthusiasm for training was catching, so Obito picked a kunai from the offered practice weapons and spun it in his hand, testing the weight. It was lighter than the one he used at home, but it wouldn't take too much getting used to.]

Sounds like a good idea. Let's do this thing.

[ooc: Handwaving is probably good for this fight, but we should have them train some other time. :3 Lol if Ling calls him amazing, Obito will be very blushy and happy~ o9 We should definitely do more next time!]

[After Obito nails him with his thrown kunai to a tree for the twentieth time or so, Ling is panting and grinning like a huge idiot, despite the fact that he's been stapled to an oak with throwing knives through the clothes. Clothes are clothes and Ling doesn't care!]

I can't believe how good your aim is, Obito!

[He's letting out this nervous, high-pitched laugh, and points to the kunai that's pinning the crotch of his kung-fu pants to this here tree.]

You.... you've got some pinpoint a-accuracy... aha, ahahaha..... haha? Any higher and I'd be unable to father any heirs!
