Location: Training Ground, Shibusen
Rating: PG-13 for violence of the training sort
Time: 6am to 9am
Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on Friday, August 13th.

[ Chika nodded, though with that last question she waited a bit before answering. Because really, it was a hard one to answer. In... in some ways maybe? She was out here instead of being in her apartment alone curled up in the blankets. That was something.

At the same time though, every time she turned her head, she could just be hit by memories of Asuka. And it hurt. ]

I don't know. Kinda. But at the same time I'm not. [ Lying to Shinji about it wasn't going to do any good. So she wasn't even going to pretend to try. ]

[As nice as sulking was, it's probably for the best that the both of them are out here instead of sitting around in their apartments all day.]

I'm sure it's rough. Having your partner just leave like that.

[Don't... try and lift the mood at all, Shinji. Gosh.]

... She probably wouldn't want you being so upset about it, though. [It's probably the best kind of comfort he can offer her at the moment, and honestly he could see Asuka getting huffy over Chika being so down, the two of them had seemed to be really close, after all.]

[ Chika blinked, but nodded. ]

I... I know. That she'd be pretty angry at me. She'd probably yell at me to go find another partner and stab all the kishins dead.

[ It actually brings a bit of a small smile to her face, but well... ]

But that's easier said than done. I... Asuka not being here isn't why I'm upset. It's not why I'm angry at BREW. I could easily get over having to find a new partner. But it's... it's different with her.

[Different? He could vaguely recall her reaction toward her previous partner getting sent home being a little less melancholy and a little more irritated, but is there some specific reason behind it?]

... What do you mean? [He sounds a little hesitant to ask, considering it is a pretty touchy subject, he figures, and he doesn't want to pry too much.]

[ Chika sighed. ]

I'm not even really sure. I mean, Zero wasn't dead back home, but I don't think that's it. Not completely. It's like... Zero and I were partners together, but we weren't super close and really didn't tell each other anything. There's no way we would've wanted to live together if we weren't partners.

[ But with Asuka... ]

Asuka... well, we got along pretty great. It's like... I don't know. Like if we had met back in my world, we could've easily had ended up moving in together eventually because we got along so well? At least, I think. [ Why you be so confusing, emotions?]

[Emotions are hard. Luckily, Shinji's willing to accept that explanation without further question. Unfortunately, the fact that Asuka and Chika had not only been partners, but close friends on top of it, weighs pretty heavily on him. His shoulders droop slightly, but he replies anyway.]

I'm sure she was glad to be living with someone she got along with easily. [Is that a self-deprecating statement? ~~Yes. He continues,]~~ She definitely seemed like she was really happy.

[ Chika nods, looking over at Shinji. She doesn't know if he was feeling even worse now than he did before, but if he is it's not like she can do much to help with it now. ] Yeah. I think she really was happy. She was always pretty gung-ho about all of this stuff.

I mean, yeah, I was fighting since I first showed up here. But it was always because the people here needed help and winning the war is the only guaranteed way back. But Asuka threw herself into training and battle. Like fighting against these the kishin eggs and stuff was something she was born to do. [ Honestly, Chika realized that what pissed her off most about this was that BREW made the stupidest choice in taking Asuka away ever. Not because Asuka was her partner, but because Asuka was easily one of the more eager people to get involved with the war.

She was upset for different (more obvious) reasons, but that was what pissed her off about that stupid thing the most.]

Ah, Asuka had been training to fight in our world for a very long time, probably most of her life. [Shinji himself only had a very basic understanding of Asuka's life prior to arriving in Tokyo-3, though he did understand that she was selected as a pilot at a younger age than he had been.]

... She actually wasn't doing so well toward the end. [Is it really his place to tell Chika any of this? He keeps going, either way.] She was having a lot of problems actually doing anything in battle. Being here and being useful probably made her feel like she had a purpose again.

Yeah. She told me a bit about that. I never really pressed her for too many details though. [ Though now she wishes that she had. Just hearing pieces from Kaoru or Shinji wouldn't be enough to know more about that part of her partner. ]

... But I didn't really know about that part. I mean, that she wasn't really doing so well. [ It makes her wish even more that Asuka was still with her because even if she had survived that just meant that her life would still suck. ]

I'm not surprised that she wouldn't bring it up. [Asuka's incredibly prideful, that much is obvious from even spending a little bit of time with her, and being a pilot was a huge deal for her. Being unable to fulfill her job was likely a very sore subject that wouldn't even be touched on unless confronted about it.] She'd probably get angry at me if she knew I was telling you about it... [Oops.] But I think... as her partner, you deserve to know how worthwhile you made her time here.

[Chika nods, before bitterly giggling a bit. She's pretty sure that Shinji could tell that it's not a happy one. ] Yeah. That sure sounds like Asuka. She'd probably start screaming at you or something for telling me all of this.

[It's pretty clear from the tone of that laugh that Shinji's efforts at helping weren't... well, helping. His resolve wilts, and unsure of what to really say or do at this point, he falls back on apologies. Those were always appropriate, right?]

Sorry. I'm sure it's really difficult for you and... I'm sorry.

~~[You didn't have to say it twice, Shinji, gosh.]~~

[ Chika sighs, pouting a bit when she realizes what happened with Shinji now that she's said it. ] You... you don't need to be sorry. It's not your fault she's not here. And well... I know that talking about her is difficult for you too.

[It may not be his fault that Asuka was sent back, but the situation she's being sent back to... he can't help but feel responsible for that. He isn't about to say as much, but the guilt weighs heavy on his expression.]

Hm... [Dismissively, his focus darts off to the side.] I just... know I'm going to miss her. [Again.]

[ Chika sighs. And instead of staying where she was, she moves closer to him and goes to wrap her arms around him in a hug. She doesn't even bother with saying anything else right now. She doesn't think anything needs to be said, really. ]

[It's pretty unfortunate that physical comfort in moments of grief isn't something that Shinji takes too well to. He flinches briefly and tenses in response to the contact, but he doesn't push Chika away. He's unsure if the hug is supposed to be for his benefit or her's; if she's doing it to cheer him up, there's really no way for her to have known it wouldn't work. If it's for her sake, well... he doesn't know how to handle it, but he figures the least he could do is not reject her. ~~Not that he's giving it a warm reception or anything.~~]

I-I'll be fine, though... [Sooner or later, anyway.]

[ Chika hugs Shinji a little bit tighter, but even as upset as she is right now she can easily tell that somethings wrong. That it's not really helping him with this. And so she pulls away after a few moments, frowning. But she does nod back at him. ] Yeah. I... we both will. Eventually.

[Shinji takes a small step back when he's released from the hug, creating a small buffer of personal space to recollect himself in.]

R-right. It will just take some time... [Maybe a lot of time.]

Yeah. We... can't really force ourselves to try to be happier. We just need to let that happen. [Though she doubts she's ever going to forgive BREW for sending Asuka away. ]
