Morning Training Log

Characters: Everyone!
Location: Training Ground, Shibusen
Rating: PG-13 for violence of the training sort
Time: 6am to 9am
Description: Training takes place every morning in the park to prepare the guests of the city for the ongoing war. It's handwaved most days, but approximately once a month this gets played out in a log. This log takes place on June 24th.

W-wait, the Evas weren't even built back then! They had only been around for m-maybe a year, two at the most.

[Well. Technically. The ones used in combat had been relatively new, but prototypes existed at least 11 years back. Buuuut he's not about to dig himself into deeper trouble with this guy by splitting hairs like that.]

[He narrows his eyes, looking for a sign of lying in Shinji's eyes.]

Why should I believe you when you're one of them?

[No lying, but definitely panicking, because wow he was not expecting to approach someone, find common ground, and then promptly have them flip out and accuse him of something that happened in another world. Maybe it's time to take a different approach from simply pleading ignorance.]

I-if I was your enemy, why would I tell you? You already said you were part of... part of the scouting legion, right?

I did. [His grip loosens a bit, but there's still plenty of suspicion in his eyes and voice.] But that doesn't mean that you'd have to fear us. Titans don't fear anything and humans who can become one even less.

[Except him, at times, but he isn't going to say that.]

[He feels a small wave of relief as Eren's grip on him is relaxed. That seemed to be a way more effective argument, and he even got a little more information to work off of out of it.]

Eva pilots don't 'become' their Evas. [Barring one really extreme situation, at least.] E-either way, it would be pretty stupid of me to just tell you, wouldn't it? [Mostly because, you know, of that reaction.]

I don't know. Would it? I could try and simply cut off a part of your arm to see whether what you're saying is the truth or not. [Titan shifters heal in a rather particular and telltale way, after all. And it'd leave no space for doubt.]

[Holy shit, Eren.

Shinji's not entirely sure how to take that threat, because while it sounds extreme to the point of being outlandish, the other teen has been nothing but serious up to this point. Either way, he pales a little at the thought.]

Th-there has to be some other way to prove I'm not your enemy...

[Actually, that idea isn't bad at all now that he's thinking about it. Letting Shinji go with one hand he quickly reaches inside his pocket where he has brought one of the knives from the kitchen with him. It's not anywhere good for fighting, but in this situation it's not that bad. He'll just have to be careful with how much pressure he applies.]

Just hold still for a moment. [Just grab that guy's hand and make a small cut into it. If he draws anything besides a little blood then Shinji's true identity is revealed.]

[If the lack of a proper amswer to his question isn't worrying enough, that knife Eren just pulled out certainly is.]

Wh-what are you...? [As the other goes for his hand, he flinches back a little, though it's not nearly enough to avoid being grabbed.] W-w-wait, you aren't- ah!

[At the cut, he lets out a small hiss of pain, but luckily enough, all that comes from it is a little blood. No extreme healing, nothing out of the ordinary for a regular human.]

.... [Eren stares at the wound for a long moment before he lets go and steps back.

Pushing his sleeve away, he begins to run the blade over his own arm as well, giving himself a cut identical to Shinji's.]

[The moment he's released, Shinji pulls his hand back and takes a step back as well, putting some wary distance between himself and Eren. Really, the cut doesn't hurt more than it does sting pretty badly, it's more the shock of having it happen at all. ~~He isn't about to turn tail and run, at least. Mustn't run away, etc.~~

Eren's next actions, on the other hand, are... very unexpected. He doesn't say anything, but the look he gives the other teen is a cautiously questioning one.]

[He lifts his arm to show Shinji the cut.] Payment for what I just did.

Being attacked out of the blue hurts, as well as ..not being trusted. [His eyes wander to the side as he remembers whose actions he has just mirrored. Being on the other side of it doesn't feel any better.] Take it as an apology.

[The action does little to improve Shinji's opinion on Eren's sanity, but he does seem to lower his defenses, just a bit.]

R-... right... [That's about as non-committal as he can bring himself to be without completely disregarding the apology. While what the other did was definitely not okay in Shinji's book, he can't help but find a modicum of sympathy toward him. He doesn't want to just... disregard Eren's words. Maybe a slight topic shift would be a good direction to take, though.]

I... don't know what happened back in your world, but it must have been awful. [He breaks eye contact, glancing off to the ground for a moment in an attempt to stop himself from apologizing as well.]

[Eren doesn't like the way people keep calling the places they come from 'my world' or 'your world' as if there were some big difference between them and the place here that could be just shoved aside, but he doesn't speak up to correct Shinji. He's not going to apologize for what he did even if he's not proud of it either.]

If you mean that humanity had to live like caged cattle waiting to be dragged out of our homes to be devoured, then yes, it was. It still is, if there's still a place left to return to once I get finally away from here.

[Titans are an awfully big difference, though. Figuratively and literally.]

That is horrible... [A slightly different kind of horrible that came with living in a world where humanity was constantly under threat of being wiped out should an angel appear, but similar enough that he could at least relate a little.] ... I'm sorry. [Damn. At least he'd tried to stop himself from saying it.]

[True, but Eren doesn't know that. Also, EVAs sound a terrible lot like titans.]

You shouldn't be. [He pulls his sleeve back over his arm before anything suspicious could be seen. His healing hasn't been working has half as much as before ever since he arrived here, but Eren still doesn't want to take any chances.] Being sorry makes it sounds as if it's something terrible that can't be helped. If we start thinking like that we can just as well stay put while we wait for them to wipe the rest of us out as well.

[And he doesn't even know what the Evas were built to fight.]

That... isn't really what I meant. It's just unfortunate that it's happened at all. [Also he's sort of sorry for bringing it up in the first place because wow that was a really extreme reaction from Eren thinking he might have been involved somehow.] At least it sounds like you have a lot of really capable people on your side.

We do. [His expression turns sober, voice sad as he lowers his eyes to the ground.] But it's still an uphill struggle nobody knows if we can win. Everybody keeps dying...

[Like Petra, Auruo, Erd and Gunther. They had been the nest of the best but then.. He forces himself to quit the thought before unpleasant memories start to rise.]

[That's an unfortunate inevitability in war, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to hurt when it happens. Either way, Shinji can sympathize.]

As long as there's someone willing to fight, it isn't impossible to win, right? [He and the other pilots had certainly triumphed under nearly-impossible odds before, and even when all the pilots had been incapacitated in one way or another, it had been Misato, a non-soldier, forcing things in to action. All it really took was someone. It's a weirdly optimistic stance from Shinji, though it's backed with some awfully bitter memories.]

[He takes a deep breath, but the 'right' gets stuck in his throat.]

I don't know. [He exhales, suddenly sounding very mature and very serious.] Humanity has been fighting and losing for over hundred years now and more good men and women have died than we can be possibly imagine, for very little in return. We're still being pushed back and we still have no clues of what we are even fighting against or why. Even if we give our everything to win I don't know if we can.

[His green-blue eyes find Shinji's, determination shining in them like a beacon to keep fighting no matter what.]

But there's one thing that I know for sure: it's that we can't win anything if we're not fighting. The moment we discard this all those sacrificed lives and suffering will have been for naught.

[Shinji's supply of optimistic views and comforting words is awfully small in the first place, and by now he feels rather tapped out. Honestly, with that kind of intensity and drive coming from Eren, all he can think at this point is how much it would have helped to have someone like him on their side back home. Maybe things wouldn't have gone so horribly toward the end...

What's done is done, though. No amount of wishful thinking will change what's happened.]

... Hey, um, I don't think I got your name earlier.

[His conviction and determination are about the one things that really elevate Eren from everybody else. Although he himself tends to forget that a lot.]

Ah? It's Eren. [He salutes, right hand in a fist over his heart and the left at the small of his back.] Eren Jaeger, from the Scouting Legion, Levi's Squad!

[What an impressive introduction. He can't match it, but he at least will give Eren his name in return.] Ikari Shinji.

[Normally, he'd throw in a, 'nice to meet you,' but normally he doesn't get a knife pulled on him when first meeting someone, so he's pretty positive the usual pleasantly doesn't need to be stated.]

[Returning at ease, Eren nods with a semi-friendly expression.]

Let's get along from now on, Ikari. [Guess who once again stumbled into the assumption that everybody would give their first name first and be okay with being called it if you're of a similar age and rank.] Ah... And don't think that that with the knife is something I'd do all the time. That was a first. But I needed to make sure that you're not an enemy.

[It kind of works out, then. Shinji's a little more okay with the family name and no suffix than he would be with Eren just using his given name, especially after the whole stunt pulled after the misunderstanding.]

S-... sure. [At least he's trying to make peace.] You don't have to worry about me causing any trouble for you.
