With the gala being planned for next weekend, this weekend promised to be a busy one at Yesterday’s Magic. Lily had stayed late to rearrange the shop after hearing the news yesterday and now that she had completed her usual pre-opening salt water, sage, and candle ritual, she paused to survey her handiwork before unlocking the door.

On one side, the racks towards the front were now hung with suits, tuxedos, and the occasional tailcoat covering every decade from the 1890s to the 1980s. And on the other side, clouds of tulle, taffeta, lace, and chiffon enveloped the racks, some of the outfits pricey but generally cheaper than a new gown at a department store would be. Baskets of glittering costume jewelry, opera gloves, shawls, and bow ties waited, their contents soon to adorn partygoers’ arms and necks. Vintage heels, dress shoes, and even a few top hats lined the shelves next to the small curtained-off spaces that served as changing areas. The business suits, more casual everyday clothes, and frilly old-fashioned lingerie had been moved to the back and the whole shop was scented with fresh laundry and rosemary and sage.

Turning to the shop window, Lily adjusted a sign advertising that tailoring services were available and the smaller one next to it that read “Help Wanted.” Now that business had picked up somewhat, another clerk or two would be a help. With Kanji taking missions regularly—he would be out today but was scheduled to be in Saturday and Sunday—and her need to frequently go out in search of new inventory, Yuugi being left to watch the shop alone wasn’t uncommon. Satisfied that everything was in place, she unlocked the door and flipped the closed sign to open.

[Between helping customers, Lily was here working on shop paperwork, checking the Death City Times for estate auctions ads, folding scarves, or doing other various small tasks related to the business. Hearing someone approach, she looked up with the standard shopkeeper’s greeting…]

[As the day progressed and customers flipped through the clothes, the racks started becoming unruly. Lily moved around the shop floor, smoothing brocade vests and satin skirts back into place. Once in a while, when she thought no one was looking, she would pick up a jacket or dress, close her eyes, and hug it to herself for a minute.]

[There were three small curtained off spaces here with a three-way mirror outside. Lily tended to leave customers to try on potential purchases in privacy but could be flagged down by those who needed help with a hard-to-reach zipper or figuring out how to knot a bow tie.]

[The in-store tailor just happens to be keeping the shelves tidy after each crowd picks through the shop, taking the occasional short break to peek through and find something for himself, or having a chat with the boss-lady. [He knew that if he made it known he was coming she'd probably lock the door, and that would be a sad day indeed. Instead he slipped in with a crowd and made himself a little scarce among a few of the costume racks.

...Until he'd seen her stop and use what he knew now was her Meister Ability. Deep concentration. Perfect. So that meant he could quietly walk right up from behind and-]

I do hope you pick that one.

[She's rifled through plenty of dresses by now and put them back just like before. Whoever's unorganized them, it definitely isn't her. What she's really looking at it style and functionality. It doesn't matter the size; she already knows it would have to be fitted in other places.]

... [Alright, one stipulation. No pattern prints. Back to the darker colors.]

[The downside of having such great concentration was that Lily tended to get too absorbed in what she was doing at times. So, when she heard that familiar voice behind her, her eyes flew open and her shoulders jumped up slightly. She whirled around, a tad annoyed.]

Do you make a habit of sneaking up on people?! And I need to save these dresses for paying customers.

[The beaded aqua tulle confection in her arms was returned to the rack.]

[Lily had been busy helping other customers but now that there was a lull, she realized that the blue-haired woman has been in the shop for quite a while. She approached, blinking a bit as she finally noticed how low cut her neckline was. There had been that heatwave recently but wasn't this a bit extreme?]

...Um, can I help you find anything?

[Valentine set the next dress back and turned to Lily when spoken to.]

Yes. I require a dress for this Gala coming up. Preferably short - the knees or higher - and functional. I'm mainly going to guard this event so I'll need to be able to move.

[Hiro has started looking through the racks of clothes, trying to figure out what would look best on him, but... fancy stuff isn't really his style, sometimes. So for now he's just going to browse till he can find something that agrees with him.]

June 12th

[It isn't often that Valentine sees a young male around her height unless they had gigas blood in them. He's been pointed out to her as the tailor so she makes the approach, stopping as he seemed to be looking for something. One hand holding the dress finally picked out, the other comes to rest on her hip]

I have a re-sizing job for you.

[Here's a new face Lily hasn't seen in the shop before.]

Do you need any help? I take it you're looking for clothes for the party next weekend. [It seemed to be what most shoppers were after today with how many had made a beeline for the suits and gowns.]

[Another blink.] You're a security guard? [From the outfit, Lily had taken her for a nurse.]

Well, I do have some cocktail dresses that might fit the bill. [She moved over to a rack of shorter dresses.] Were you looking for a certain color?

[Hiro has to take his head out of the racks to respond.]

Yep! Trying to find something for the party. I'm not really sure what would look good on me, though.

Security guard, medic, whatever the Watch needs. [Mostly]

[Following along, the short dresses appear promising] No. I'm not picky about colors.

[She nods, her eyes moving up and down as she notes his current clothes. From his age, she assumes he's not used to dressing up that often.]

Did you have an idea of how formal you want to go? A tuxedo or a tailcoat? Or just a nice suit?

Oh. [That's kind of an odd combination...]

Maybe, a little black dress? [She held up a simple short-sleeved one from the 1960s with a rounded neckline, a narrow belt, and a fitted black skirt. It looks like it might be a bit too small even if let out as much as possible though.]

Hm...

[Valentine looks it over and - without knowing it - mentally comes to the same conclusion as Lily.] I'm not going to fit that no matter how much that's let out.

[Well what can he say, he eats his greens and drinks his milk, ma'am. But he's looking at something to add to his ensemble for the Gala when he's approached, and he turns his head, releasing a tie that he's smoothing between his fingers.]

Huh? Oh, sure.

[He can't help but look from the dress to the woman. She's gonna look seriously awesome in it, but he's gonna have to do some serious work to get the, uhm... those... in the dress. Kanji looked away quickly.]

Y'wanna get measured up real quick first? Then we can talk time frames n' stuff.

[The perfect response. He quietly laughed.]

No, just you. ...Oh?

[He shrugged.]

Have you any plans to attend this Gala?

[That cross eye just watched, noting the tie, but then went back to focusing on Kanji. He looked away; interesting... much different than the other male she met. Whatever did happen to those costumes?]

Works for me. Let's get started...

[And she wondered. Slowly, she raised a hand like making to unbutton her uniform then and there.]

[He opened his mouth to direct her to one of the back rooms for a little privacy, but his eyes locked on that hand. What was she- Oh, no-- Oh god-]

N-n-not here!! People're freakin' watching!!

[Only nobody was, and Kanji was shutting his eyes tight against his red face. He was getting Bayonetta vibes. That was trouble.]

[Lily looks between the dress and Valentine.] I reckon you're right. Maybe, we should find a larger dress that can be taken in at the waist... That would be easier, I think. [She flips through the rack, looking for the larger sizes.]

[That reaction earned a chuckle]

The store's practically empty, but if you want this to be more private...

[She smirked under her mask, but his eyes are closed. Oh what fun it will be when he finds out she knows her own measurements. No matter, her hand had stopped moving.]

[He cleared his throat quickly. Professional. Professional.]

Yeah, I-I mean it's for your privacy, so...

[He gestured for the back room and dug into his pocket to get his tape measure. With Valentine's back turned at all, Kanji would ease out a sigh to calm his nerves. Gotta keep it together.]
