With the gala being planned for next weekend, this weekend promised to be a busy one at Yesterday’s Magic. Lily had stayed late to rearrange the shop after hearing the news yesterday and now that she had completed her usual pre-opening salt water, sage, and candle ritual, she paused to survey her handiwork before unlocking the door.

On one side, the racks towards the front were now hung with suits, tuxedos, and the occasional tailcoat covering every decade from the 1890s to the 1980s. And on the other side, clouds of tulle, taffeta, lace, and chiffon enveloped the racks, some of the outfits pricey but generally cheaper than a new gown at a department store would be. Baskets of glittering costume jewelry, opera gloves, shawls, and bow ties waited, their contents soon to adorn partygoers’ arms and necks. Vintage heels, dress shoes, and even a few top hats lined the shelves next to the small curtained-off spaces that served as changing areas. The business suits, more casual everyday clothes, and frilly old-fashioned lingerie had been moved to the back and the whole shop was scented with fresh laundry and rosemary and sage.

Turning to the shop window, Lily adjusted a sign advertising that tailoring services were available and the smaller one next to it that read “Help Wanted.” Now that business had picked up somewhat, another clerk or two would be a help. With Kanji taking missions regularly—he would be out today but was scheduled to be in Saturday and Sunday—and her need to frequently go out in search of new inventory, Yuugi being left to watch the shop alone wasn’t uncommon. Satisfied that everything was in place, she unlocked the door and flipped the closed sign to open.

[Lily looks between the dress and Valentine.] I reckon you're right. Maybe, we should find a larger dress that can be taken in at the waist... That would be easier, I think. [She flips through the rack, looking for the larger sizes.]

That will work...

[Guess whatever world these clothes typically belong to aren't used to women of her build. She watches as Lily continues going through the rack, reds, oranges... maybe no to orange for this event.]

[Hmm... Looks like all the other little black dresses are even smaller.]

How about this one? [She pulls out a dress of bright pink silk in a style reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe. The low back should make fitting the top less of an issue although...] It might look better with a crinoline added.

[Yeah, looks like they're all out.]

[She turns and eyes the dress up and down. Pink, she can deal with it] A crinoline? [Her tone is definitely asking if Lily is serious.]

...Um, I take that as a no. [Okay, back goes the pink dress.]

I guess we can skip over the rest of the 1950s stuff then. Most of those were intended to be worn with crinolines. [Time to move further down the rack...]

It would be an obstruction. [Guess you could ram someone with it. Still, no.]

[Valentine sighs and follows, watching Lily as she begins going through the new dresses.]

I suppose flapper dresses are out, too. [The fashions of the 1920s tend to be shorter and loose with dropped waistlines but a boyish figure was the ideal then...]

[Dag nab it! They're running out of dresses... Did she have any more in the back?]

[niptuck]

There needs to be some existing form.

[She can already imagine what that flapper dress is going to become without a waist.]

[She'll at least look through the next rack while Lily tries to find something.]

Why don't you keep looking while I check in the back? There were a few dresses that needed repairs and they might be done now.

[And she's going to disappear into the back room for a couple of minutes, eventually coming back with three more dresses draped over her arms: emerald green satin, pale yellow chiffon, and red silk overlaid with black lace.]

Do you like any of these?

[She doesn't have anything better to do. She begins to rifle through the dresses again, waiting for Lily to come back. When she does, Valentine doesn't appear to have found anything.]

[The emerald dress is taken into more consideration over the yellow chiffon, but she does come to linger on the red silk]

Hm... The red one will do.

[She hands her the red dress with a nod.]

You can try it on if you like, see where it needs adjustment. My tailor is in today and he should be able to alter it for you.

[And she'll add the emerald satin and yellow chiffon to the racks.]

[Looking the dress over a few times, Valentine seems satisfied.]

Where would I find the changing area?

Along the wall over there. [She gestures towards the curtained-off spaces on the other side of the shop.]

[It's just a simple nod and Valentine walks off. Finding the tailor would be soon enough.]
