With the gala being planned for next weekend, this weekend promised to be a busy one at Yesterday’s Magic. Lily had stayed late to rearrange the shop after hearing the news yesterday and now that she had completed her usual pre-opening salt water, sage, and candle ritual, she paused to survey her handiwork before unlocking the door.

On one side, the racks towards the front were now hung with suits, tuxedos, and the occasional tailcoat covering every decade from the 1890s to the 1980s. And on the other side, clouds of tulle, taffeta, lace, and chiffon enveloped the racks, some of the outfits pricey but generally cheaper than a new gown at a department store would be. Baskets of glittering costume jewelry, opera gloves, shawls, and bow ties waited, their contents soon to adorn partygoers’ arms and necks. Vintage heels, dress shoes, and even a few top hats lined the shelves next to the small curtained-off spaces that served as changing areas. The business suits, more casual everyday clothes, and frilly old-fashioned lingerie had been moved to the back and the whole shop was scented with fresh laundry and rosemary and sage.

Turning to the shop window, Lily adjusted a sign advertising that tailoring services were available and the smaller one next to it that read “Help Wanted.” Now that business had picked up somewhat, another clerk or two would be a help. With Kanji taking missions regularly—he would be out today but was scheduled to be in Saturday and Sunday—and her need to frequently go out in search of new inventory, Yuugi being left to watch the shop alone wasn’t uncommon. Satisfied that everything was in place, she unlocked the door and flipped the closed sign to open.

Yep! Trying to find something for the party. I'm not really sure what would look good on me, though.

[She nods, her eyes moving up and down as she notes his current clothes. From his age, she assumes he's not used to dressing up that often.]

Did you have an idea of how formal you want to go? A tuxedo or a tailcoat? Or just a nice suit?

Hmm... I'm not completely sure. I'm guessing an ordinary suit wouldn't be fancy enough for the Gala, so... probably a tuxedo? A tailcoat sounds too stuffy.

Okay, then. I also have more to choose from in tuxedos than tailcoats. Except for really formal occasions, they fell out of fashion around the 1920s. [She explains as she moves towards a rack of tuxes.] Most of them are here. Do you know roughly what size you'd need?

You really do have stuff from all kinds of times here, don't you? [He takes a look at the rack, peeking at a few labels.] Yeah, I think so. If worst comes to worst, I can just try it on... right?

[vintage_magic]

[She nods, more than happy to talk about the subject.] My stock covers about a century, starting with a few things from the late 1800s. Tuxedos haven't changed that much over the years other than details so picking one is mostly deciding on things like whether you want a vest or not. And if you'd prefer the usual black or midnight blue, which is less common but still traditional. You're welcome to try on different ones to compare.

Wow. Is the old stuff custom-made in that style? [A brief pause as he looks at some more tuxes.] I think I'd like a tuxedo with a vest, unless that's way out of style. Maybe make the vest dark blue?

[vintage_magic]

[Lily shakes her head.] My tailor has been experimenting with copying simple dresses in '50s and '60s styles but all of the tuxedos I have are actually vintage. Vests were a must for earlier decades but they're not as commonly worn now. Still, they look nice and it's a way to add some color if you don't want all black. I should have a few here... [She moves over to the vest section and flips through, picking out some to show him. There's a plain navy silk, one with vertical stripes, and a brocade.]

[everyonesconfidant]

Yeah, I don't want to go with all black. [He follows her to the vest section and watches her pick a few out.] I think I like this one. ["This one" being the plain navy silk vest.]

[vintage_magic]

That's a nice choice. [She nods and hands him the plain vest, returning the others to the rack before moving on to the tuxedos.]

Now, let's find a jacket for you... Would you rather have one with a notched collar? Or a shawl collar—that's the rounded type of lapels.

[Hiro takes the vest and watches Lily go.] Let's see... I think the notched collar is better.

[vintage_magic]

Okay. [She looks over at Hiro, trying to guess what would be the right size for him. Then, more flipping through the racks and eventually pulling out a few she thinks might fit him. They're all pretty similar with the variations being in whether the jackets are single or double breasted and how wide the satin lapels are.] Maybe, one of these?

Let's see. I think I like... this one. [Hiro picks a single-breasted jacket with lapels that aren't too wide.]

[vintage_magic]

[She nods, replacing the others.] Do you need a dress shirt too or do you already have one? Oh, and a tie of some type.

[everyonesconfidant]

I should definitely get those, too. Do you have those in stock, or is it just suits and dresses?

[vintage_magic]

I have a few dress shirts but not that many. [She gestures to another rack.] It's more difficult to find white ones in good condition because the fabric can yellow with age.

I've got plenty of bow ties though. They're in those baskets over there. [She pointed out a couple of baskets filled with bits of silk. There was both the traditional black and white for formal events as well as more unconventional colors and patterned fabrics.]

Hmm... I see. [He goes over to the dress shirts and looks through them.] Do you have normal ties, too?

[vintage_magic]

Of course. They're in some of the other baskets. [And she walks away for a moment, returning with two baskets full of neckties. Skinny, wide, and in between. And in an assortment of colors and patterns.]

Whoa... that's quite a variety. [Hiro picks out a medium-width blue tie.] How about this one? I think it'll go with everything else.

[vintage_magic]

[She nods, setting the baskets down.] That should go nicely with the vest and jacket. If you can find a shirt that will fit, you can go try everything on and see how it looks on you.

Alright, I'll go do that! Thanks for the help. Could you take a look when I'm done, maybe?

[A nod.] Of course.

[And if he doesn't have any more questions for the moment, she'll just go put these baskets of ties back where they belong.]
