With the gala being planned for next weekend, this weekend promised to be a busy one at Yesterday’s Magic. Lily had stayed late to rearrange the shop after hearing the news yesterday and now that she had completed her usual pre-opening salt water, sage, and candle ritual, she paused to survey her handiwork before unlocking the door.

On one side, the racks towards the front were now hung with suits, tuxedos, and the occasional tailcoat covering every decade from the 1890s to the 1980s. And on the other side, clouds of tulle, taffeta, lace, and chiffon enveloped the racks, some of the outfits pricey but generally cheaper than a new gown at a department store would be. Baskets of glittering costume jewelry, opera gloves, shawls, and bow ties waited, their contents soon to adorn partygoers’ arms and necks. Vintage heels, dress shoes, and even a few top hats lined the shelves next to the small curtained-off spaces that served as changing areas. The business suits, more casual everyday clothes, and frilly old-fashioned lingerie had been moved to the back and the whole shop was scented with fresh laundry and rosemary and sage.

Turning to the shop window, Lily adjusted a sign advertising that tailoring services were available and the smaller one next to it that read “Help Wanted.” Now that business had picked up somewhat, another clerk or two would be a help. With Kanji taking missions regularly—he would be out today but was scheduled to be in Saturday and Sunday—and her need to frequently go out in search of new inventory, Yuugi being left to watch the shop alone wasn’t uncommon. Satisfied that everything was in place, she unlocked the door and flipped the closed sign to open.

[He knew that if he made it known he was coming she'd probably lock the door, and that would be a sad day indeed. Instead he slipped in with a crowd and made himself a little scarce among a few of the costume racks.

...Until he'd seen her stop and use what he knew now was her Meister Ability. Deep concentration. Perfect. So that meant he could quietly walk right up from behind and-]

I do hope you pick that one.

[The downside of having such great concentration was that Lily tended to get too absorbed in what she was doing at times. So, when she heard that familiar voice behind her, her eyes flew open and her shoulders jumped up slightly. She whirled around, a tad annoyed.]

Do you make a habit of sneaking up on people?! And I need to save these dresses for paying customers.

[The beaded aqua tulle confection in her arms was returned to the rack.]

[The perfect response. He quietly laughed.]

No, just you. ...Oh?

[He shrugged.]

Have you any plans to attend this Gala?

Gee, I feel so special. [She rolled her eyes.] And I expect I'll be selling a lot of them for this party. [Even though she had been carrying more formal dresses than usual lately because of prom season, she worried her selection might still run out before next weekend.]

Not in particular but I suppose I should after being asked to help provide clothes.

It would appear the past riots had not stopped the flow of clientele completely. While I cannot read auras, I had my suspicions that you worried about the welfare of your business taking off here.

[He smiled, then.]

Then allow me to be formal: It would be a pleasure to attend the Gala with you, Miss Ivory. Would you perhaps consider it?

Well, yes. It hasn't been easy with money issues... [That was an understatement. With a fat stock portfolio developed through her witchy talents back home, setting up Aunt Cora's Closet hadn't been nearly as difficult. Here, it seemed she had to worry about running short on cash every week or two...]

Actually, I was thinking I'd just go alone. [Maybe, someone has to remember not to sneak up on potential dates first...]

Hmmm, I see, I see. Then I suppose I'll have to ask for a dance or two before the evening is out.

I simply must see you in action. Consider me curious.

[She might have paled a bit at the mention of dancing.]

...Um, I was thinking I'd just watch. I've already told you I'm no good at dancing. [Did he want to see her stumble around completely out of time with the music so he could laugh at her?]

And if I told you your dancing skill matters not to me...?

[Or maybe he just wants to have legitimate fun with you, sweetheart.]

But it'd still be embarrassing.

[Even if she'd managed decently with Aidan at the Art Deco Ball, she suspected he was using his magic to help her along. And she'd rather not have an audience for her terrible lack of rhythm.]

Then simply put we don't take the dance floor's center. I'm sure there'll be plenty of show-offs.

But I really don't know how to dance. I think even that wolf would do better than me!

Well, I prefer my dates with opposable thumbs. And of the same species.

Even then, I'm sure you could find someone better to dance with... [Who did he even know? She wasn't aware of many...] Um, how about Rosalia?

All ready approached her as a chaperone.

[He shook his head. Honestly...] I need not remind you that she is also a child, Lily. I remain firm in that I've no desire to spend the night in a jail cell.

[Her cheeks turned pink at the implication.] I wasn't suggesting you do anything with her other than dance!

And I implied no such thing. I would prefer she danced with those within her age range; the girl does need to get out more, far too sweet to stay cooped up in the clinics...

[Be happy, Lily, he's socializing with his co-workers. And Valentine. Dear god.]

Regardless, my offer still stands and there is ample time until the event. Take it as you will.

[She gave him a skeptical look as she recalled the night she returned.] Are you going on about dance lessons again? My friend Bronwyn already tried back home and it didn't work.

O ye of little faith, Lily...

Well, we can speak further on this another day. I come as a customer, and defer judgment to the expert before me on something suitable for the Gala.

You're looking for a tuxedo? [She wondered what was considered formal wear back in his world anyway.]

If you feel that is what I require, then yes. 'Tis beyond my overall scope of clothing knowledge, however... what is involved with your tuxedo?

[She shrugged and pulled out an example from the rack, holding it up for him to examine.] It's the most common for men's formal wear these days. Usually worn with a white dress shirt and a black bow tie.

There are tailcoats, too, but people tend to save those for very formal events.

Hmm... [He removed his gloves and tucked them into his coat pocket, before reaching out to feel the material.]

It isn't often that I wear black... it tends to clash with the eyes.

[He looked up at hers. He'd always noticed them because he'd never seen ones like his own before he'd met her. He tipped his head.]

Would I be the only one with this problem? Am I picky...?

Huh? Most folks tend to think black goes with everything. [She'd never particularly thought about whether it clashed with her own reddish purple eyes. Maybe, he was picky...]

Midnight blue is another traditional color for tuxedos but they're not as common. [She hung the black tuxedo back on the rack and flipped through some of the others. She had a few of those in the shop, didn't she?]
