[OPEN] Mission 156

Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.

The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.

The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!

Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

'Alright,' he replied automatically, already moving to strike again while the kishin egg was still reeling from the last attack. It had only just steadied itself and looked up when the whip connected again, and then Kaworu was jumping back and bringing the shield back up before any retaliation could be made.

Yako could practically feel him snap into step, finding a rhythm that worked for him. On this latest stroke she managed to get an even greater haul, and carefully pooled her stolen energy together. 'Alright, more than enough for a good Backlash. That means that the next one doesn't have to hit, but if it does it will have a....greater effect. And if you can manage a hit on the neck we'll be done, but no pressure.' It didn't appear to have plating, like some of the others she had seen...

She hoped Kaworu would be able to handle seeing the result.

'Around the neck?' he echoed, pausing for a moment now that the shield was back to catch his breath. He'd had training in all kinds of fighting styles and defense, of course, but he hadn't really ever needed any of that when he could guard against attacks and destroy or disable any opponents all with his A.T. Field. This much movement in an actual fight was just really unfamiliar. 'Why the neck?'

Certainly, the neck was generally a weak spot on any vertebrate, and he was very much tempted to go for it now just to see if he could -- and already, he was eyeing that vulnerable point on the kishin egg through the semi-transparent soul material. But still, it was a strangely specific target.

There was a moment of silence on her end. It wasn't sheepish, or ashamed, just...silence. 'It's...It's a cleaner kill, that way.' Less painful than whittling and battering away at the Kishin Egg, wearing it down in all senses of the word. One way or another, this monster would die today. Yako didn't feel the rage she did in Norway, when the little boy had been injured, or in Australia, when the darker Bakura had nearly died.

Without that hot, bitter emotion driving her instead of her normal reason, she couldn't muster up the desire to draw this out any longer than she absolutely had to.

Kaworu was similarly quiet on his end for a bit, but then he simply sent back, 'Alright.'

Even if her words said it in the least detailed way possible, he could still feel the distaste for violence in her, close enough to his own that he saw no reason to disagree. Even if it was a monster twisted by the Witches, the kishin egg was still a living thing, and while it definitely had to be put down he didn't like the idea of making it a more painful experience than it needed to be. If there was a clean way to do this with a whip, then he was all for it.

So he watched the thing for a few seconds longer, while it hunched in the snow defensively and looked torn between futilely attacking and just running away. A cleaner kill it is, he decided, and all at once dropped the shield and lashed out, as close to the monster's neck as he could approximate.
itaidakimasu: (telling me I'm running out of time)

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-09 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
'Alright.' She was relieved that he didn't pry, though she hadn't particularly expected him to try. Kaworu didn't seem to be the type to argue for gratuitous violence, for all that he was a self-professed Destroyer of Worlds. She followed his motions carefully, waiting until the last possible moment. As soon as her cord first made contact with its neck she unleashed the energy in one big burst.

She could hear the wet crackling noise of its vertebrae breaking, both from the energy and the enforced blow. She forced herself not to think about it, and instead watched carefully as it slowly tumbled to the ground. Had she been capable, she would have winced at the angle its head landed at. As it was, she merely waited, making sure that it really wasn't getting back up before she switched back into her human form.

Her fingers were curled tightly around Kaworu's. She blew out a tired sigh and stared a the small ball of light slowly rising up out of the corpse. "Well...one steep left."

Kaworu winced enough for the both of them at the sound of its neck cracking, and he turned away from it the moment its soul slipped out. Dead things were unpleasant, no matter the world.

"Do I need to do anything for this part?" he asked after a moment, just happy to have Yako's warm hand in his again. Not just for that warmth, of course. Resonance was wonderful, but especially after fighting something that would have happily killed them given the chance, it was comforting to feel a pulse against his palm and body heat that was so indicative of life.

"No." She squeezed his fingers and began walking towards the fresh corpse, gently tugging him along with her. "This much is enough." As long as he just kept holding her hand...she'd probably be okay. Probably. It would keep the Madness from making it worse, at least.

Yako stopped less than a foot away from the fallen monster and very carefully did not look at Kaworu as she bent down. She didn't particularly want to see the expression he would make. Her fingers closed gently around the corrupted soul and she straightened slowly and deliberately. Then, closing her eyes and quietly murmuring an "itadakimasu," she popped it into her mouth and swallowed. Immediately the self-incrimination welled up, quickly followed by the urge to cry, but she had enough experience by now to force it down.

"...we should keep moving," she said after a brief silence. She still wasn't looking at him, but her grip on his hand had grown desperately tight.

He stood silently by while she did what she needed to, all too aware of her grip tightening through the process and the quiet despair leaking through the remaining bit of resonance. Distraught at her distress, he tried pumping all the comfort and soothing he could into their connection, but he wasn't sure that it was enough for her to even notice and then she wouldn't even look at him...

"Hold on," Kaworu answered to her suggestion, instead tugging her close to himself and wrapping his arms around her. Yako had an inch or two on him, but he pulled her head down to his shoulder anyway and held her tightly.
itaidakimasu: (Get tangled up in me)

A million worst-case scenarios flashed through her head in that instant, like him not wanting to partner up anymore, or asking if she would let go of his hand, before it registered that she was hugging him. She was tense for just one second and then it all abruptly flooded out of her, leaving her to cling to him desperately. She had only ever done this in Ireland, after her first mission with Kanji, so an outlet like this was long overdue. The darker Bakura wasn't exactly one for comfort or cuddles, after all.

Still, she didn't allow herself to cry. A sniffle here and there, perhaps, and shaking shoulders, definitely. But no tears. She had promised Neuro, after all, and she hated going back on her word. Especially to him.

He's happy to just hug her for now, satisfied that he seemed to have made the right decision when she latched on like that. For a minute or two he lets her just relax, stroking a gentle hand through her hair and humming something soft and calm.

Only when he feels the shaking subsiding does he pull back some, peering up at her with a smile. "Are we ready to continue now?"
itaidakimasu: (Default)

He died before his growth spurt. That's so sad :c

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
She raised her cheek a touch reluctantly when he drew back, but nodded with a wan, tremulous smile. "Yeah...thank you." Her voice was soft and sincere, nearly lost in the wind. She needed that, though. There was only so much she could bottle up at one time, and resonating with somebody like Kaworu made even that much a chore.

She gave him one last squeeze, then, feeling her gratitude well up and overflow, tilted her head up to press a kiss to his forehead.
diedforyoursins: (✞what are you making him touch oh my god)

he might be as tall as 4'10" or 4'11", it's pretty much all just calculations made by obsessive fans

[personal profile] diedforyoursins 2012-10-11 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
He has never received a kiss before, of any sort. So for a moment he just blinks, but then he is positively beaming up at her, sliding her arms back so her can take her hands and give them a soft squeeze.

"Anytime," he said with absolute sincerity, certain at that moment that he would happily die for her too.
itaidakimasu: (Hee!)

Still pre-growth spurt... ;;

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yako squeezed back and her smile grew a bit stronger, regaining some of its normal warmth. As nice as this moment was, however, this was hardly the place to get lost in gentle emotions. She shivered and dropped one of his hands to rub over her arm.

"If we stand here much longer we might get frozen solid," she said. There was an apologetic note behind it, though; if it was any other situation, if they didn't have a mission to finish...she wouldn't have minded at all.

"Then we should go." There would surely be time for cuddles and such later, after the mission and out of the cold. For now, he could just hope that they only encountered Madness-crazed animals for the rest of the mission so Yako would not have to eat any more souls. "Come on, before we really do freeze."
itaidakimasu: (clinging to a little bit of spine)

poor baby. :c Yako needs to take him out and show him how to be a real teen

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
"That would just be pathetic, after everything we've done to get this far." She started walking once more, taking his arm again. This time, however, their fingers were laced. She wasn't ready to let go yet. Had she still been able to hear his thoughts, she would have found the sentiment sweet but unnecessary. Until Ashura himself was defeated or she was sent home, there would always have to be another soul for her to eat.
diedforyoursins: (♫and then he kills a kitten)

it's like yako and takuto are both determined to corrupt an angel, dear lord...

[personal profile] diedforyoursins 2012-10-11 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
He grinned, almost able to forget about the chill with this good mood and the warm hand in his. His teeth weren't even chattering anymore, he'd noticed, though perhaps that was from whatever extra warmth had been generated through the effort of the fighting.

"It would be a novelty, at least. I had never even seen snow before this, and falling to the unknown and unfamiliar is just as often a fatal flaw in fiction as living opponents are."
itaidakimasu: (bzuh?!)

...WHO TOLD YOU. >_> <_< I mean...that's preposterous!

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yako nearly stopped in her tracks when she heard that little tidbit of information, stumbling slightly. She quickly regained her balance though, and turned to stare at him with wide eyes as she fell back into pace. "Wait, wait...today was your first time seeing snow ever? That's..." Unbelievable. Insane. Tragic.

"I thought you said you were raised in Germany?" Though he was albino...perhaps he had been kept indoors as a precaution while he was young. Or...it was a sad thought, but perhaps, as the vessel for his 'father's' soul, he had never been viewed as a child at all, or let out to play.
diedforyoursins: (♫i just wanted to borrow some soap)

well takuto isn't exactly doing a great job of being subtle in that drama club post...

[personal profile] diedforyoursins 2012-10-11 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
"I was." And it was true that he hadn't really ever been let out, but for once that wasn't the reason for his lack of worldly experience. "The event that caused my birth as a human also shifted the tilt of the Earth's axis, which eliminated the change of seasons worldwide. Germany has had perpetually mild weather as long as I have lived. I visited Japan briefly, but there is only an endless summer..."

The way she was looking at him was odd, though -- uncomfortably similar to everyone back home who'd ever reacted badly to him and made him feel so out of place. "...Is it so strange? I suppose in other worlds it must be a common enough thing, but..."
itaidakimasu: (Pout)

Takuto isn't subtle period. :|

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
"I see..." Yako frowned thoughtfully, before looking at the ground. A moment later she looked back up, disappointment written clewrly across her face. "I wish the snow here was powdery, but it's all iced over now. I can't show you how to make snowballs or snowmen or even snow angels..." It felt like a crime, to just let him go without those experiences.

"It's a little strange, but mostly...not fair. Every kid deserves to experience the joy of a snow day!" Yako was adament. Even if he wasn't completely human, in the ways that counted here Kaworu was still younger than Yako. He deserved a childhood, and childish pastimes!
diedforyoursins: (♫except not)

good, it'd be hard enough to get kaworu in bed without worrying about being subtle

[personal profile] diedforyoursins 2012-10-11 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Kaworu just arched an eyebrow, the corner of his lips quirking upward slightly. His body was physically fifteen, true, but he was still a divine being as old as mankind itself.

"Perhaps there will be another occasion for you to show me," he said instead, not wanting to spoil her fun. "Most things in this world are new for me. As many splendors as there are to be had, I think there is plenty to hold my focus until a time comes that such things can be experienced."
itaidakimasu: (Interest)

Also very true...

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Even with that thought dangling at the back of her mind, Yako sincerely doubted that a divine being as old as mankind had ever had the opportunity and knowledge concerning how to make a snowman or have a snowball fight. He still deserved a chance to, human child or otherwise.

"Definitely," Yako said, with feeling. "And you'll have to tell me if there's anything else that you know you've missed out on and want to try. I'll absolutely make time to go do it with you!" It would even be fun; like they were normal friends, just hanging out or fooling around instead of fighting a war against insanity and corruption given physical form.
diedforyoursins: (♫chill bro)

wow yako you are lucky he is too innocent and pure to make proper use of that offer

[personal profile] diedforyoursins 2012-10-11 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, what else is 'normal'?" He hardly knew enough to have any idea himself -- the works of fiction he'd been allowed had tended towards the classic side, so he wasn't exactly well-versed in the regular activities of a modern teenager. From his experience, fighting off monsters was the norm.
itaidakimasu: (S-Sorry...)

If he wasn't she wouldn't have thought to make it. XD

[personal profile] itaidakimasu 2012-10-11 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm...things like going out to eat, or shopping with friends, going to arcades with friends, seeing movies or concerts, going to festivals or fairs, playing games...that sort of stuff!" She paused, rubbing the back of her neck with her free hand a little shyly. "I mean, I'd like to think I count as a friend..." Though maybe it was a touch presumptive, considering she could count their interactions on one hand.
diedforyoursins: (✞kensuke stop)

[personal profile] diedforyoursins 2012-10-11 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course you are a friend," he replied immediately, tightening his grip on her hand and looking very insistent about that. "A precious one." After all, Shinji was more or less the love of his life, and they'd known each other for a day.

As for the rest of that... "I have watched movies with Eridan, but none of the rest," he admitted after thinking on it for a moment. "Though I sat with Mello at the cafe for a while, so perhaps I can say I have eaten with friends." He wasn't sure Mello would agree to the 'friends' bit though, whatever he though himself, and he hadn't even eaten anything that time anyway.
