"You go first. I want to see a turn in practice before I take mine," L said. Altogether, a fair request from someone who abhorred making mistakes.

Bakura nodded. "OK! First turn, Draw!" he announced, pulling his card. His eyes danced back and forth over the cards in his hand as he did his best not to grin. Yes, that strategy might work... It was a little unfair to go for that combo in the first game, but this was Ryuzaki! This was likely his only chance he had to actually win against his friend before he got as good as Yuugi-kun!

"I'll set one card face down in defense mode and end my turn!"

Now to see if Ryuzaki would play aggressive or defensively... because he had the cards to do this two ways.... one was just a lot more fun!

Aggressively, of course.

"I'm drawing... Playing the Ruddy Baker in attack mode, and setting this card faced down in defense mode. Ending my turn."

But not attacking, huh? Interesting~

Bakura nodded, drawing his next card. The face down was likely a trap... he was sure Ryuzaki was going to use a lot of those.

He nodded to himself. "Setting another card in face down defense mode, and setting another face down card," he announced. Perversely enough, it was a bit more expected that Ryuzaki would attack when there was a more obvious trap than one that was invisible. The obvious trap he could see and dismantle. The hidden one was an unknown to be studied before it was attacked.

L glanced at Bakura's facedown cards, completing his upkeep and placing a card next to the Ruddy Baker.

"This is the Cursed Crepe Press. While it's attached to the Baker, I can destroy a facedown card on your side of the field each turn. So I choose the one on the left, and I will play another facedown card in defense mode. Turn end."

"Aaaa, that's pretty troublesome! Pretty lucky to get that combo so early in!" Bakura smiled, picking up the destroyed card and placing it in his graveyard. So that was the method, huh? Whatever the method, as long as Ryuzaki kept pushing his monsters into the grave, he was still set~

Though it wouldn't do to look like he was just sitting back and letting Ryuzaki win...

"I play the Helmeted Kappa in face up attack mode. His helmet protects him from the effects of all other cards."

But the downside of the Helmeted Kappa was it's low attack points... and with the Baker having higher, a direct attack wasn't what he was going for.

"Using it to attack your face down!"

No matter what the status of that second card, the Kappa would stay on the field, and Ryuzaki would likely attack it, letting him play his trap in return.

Lucky, yes, though L probably would have preferred to think of it as skill. Had he known about Bakura's so far latent strategy reliant on the undead, he might have been a bit more careful to kill his opponents monsters, but as it was, it seemed like he was winning.

L snorted at the artwork on the Helmeted Kappa. "That's the stupidest looking card I've seen, yet." He turned his facedown card up, revealing...

"You've activated the Rabid Peach Cobbler Fortress of Infinite Crumbles. Your monster would contract rabies, but since the Helmeted Kappa can't be affected by other cards, it's transferred to another card." He pointed to another facedown card, saying seriously "This one has peach rabies, now. Even if it isn't a monster. And that means you have to flip a coin to see if the effect or attack works."

There was a touch of almost a pout at Ryuzaki's comment. While he didn't often show it, Bakura took quite a lot of pride in his more artistic accomplishments and had worked rather hard to make the artwork for the game look good and have the right feel. The Helmeted Kappa, like almost all of the horror and supernatural cards, was one he had designed completely.

But Ryuzaki was Ryuzaki and a jerk no matter what, so he pushed it aside.

Reaching into his pocket he extracted a coin (a 50 yen coin? Hadn't he taken those out of his wallet yet? Ah well.) "Call it in air!" he instructed before flipping it high.

L didn't know, of course, that Bakura had been responsible for the artwork of the card game. Not that it likely would have made an enormous difference, if he had.

"Heads," L called, watching the coin land in Bakura's palm.

Heads.

"Oh, bad luck. Your Kappa inflicts no damage this turn," he said mildly, drawing his own card.

"I'm activating this facedown spell. It's called 'Replenished Supplies,' and it allows me to draw an additional card during each upkeep. If it's destroyed, I get to reshuffle my discard pile into my deck. Since the cursed crepe press is still attached to the Baker, I'm choosing to destroy another one of your facedown cards. That one," he said, pointing to indicate.

Bakura nodded, but didn't at all seem dismayed. "Activating my trap, Revenge of the Sacrificed," he announced. "Which lets me chose one of my opponents cards to destroy when one of mine gets destroyed. Taking out your Baker!" he announced cheerfully as he moved to discard the face down monster on the field. That would leave only the Kappa.

So far, so good...

L narrowed his eyes, chewing the pad of his thumb and silently discarding the Baker and the attached Crepe Press.

He drew his new hand, plus one card as per the effects of his previous turn. "I'm playing the Pastry Chief... Pastry Chief? Really? Well, I'm playing it, then, face up in attack mode. His ability is that all pastry-related items get plus-2 attack points and plus-1 defense points while he is in play. End turn.

That one was one of Keroro's creations so Bakura didn't mind that face so much and just covered a small laugh. "Not a fan of puns?" he smiled, drawing another card. "One face down defense monster, and one other face down."

Still no attacking, huh? Interesting~ But the flow of his cards to the graveyard was steady, which was what he needed and neither of them had lost any life points yet.

There was almost an air of posturing to it, oddly enough, even though Ryuzaki was working with a mostly preconstructed deck. Idly he wondered when the strategy would shift.

"I love puns," L correctly tetchily. "Just not very stupid ones. And I'm using this turn to play one card facedown on my side of the field, and I am activating this Devil Dough. It negates the Kappa's special effect, and now I am attacking you with the idiotic Pastry Chief."

"So word play more than puns, since almost all puns are bad ones," Bakura returned with a smile. "Kappa is defeated! However, since my field is clear and there are now 3 monsters in my graveyard, I can play 'Emptying of the Graveyard.' By removing those monsters from my grave, I can special summon 3 Occult monsters from my deck to repopulate my field," he explained as he began to shuffle though to pull out his cards. "Summoning The Dolls Revenge, The Clinging Specter and Dark Necrofear."

It was one of the few cards he had copied over almost unchanged. And it was a bit of a cheat, hunting through so many packs until he had found it, but it wasn't as if he wasn't planning on buying a lot of cards to start with...!

Now, just one more condition needed to be met before the countdown began...

L stared blankly across the game at Bakura.

"That's ridiculous. I don't have a card like that in my deck, do I?"

"It's not one in the starter decks, no... That's why a lot of people customize, hunting for good cards to use and that they can use!" Bakura rubbed the back of his neck a little. "I think there is a similar one in the dessert expansions... it shouldn't be too hard to find, since it's not too rare. Most people wouldn't bother with that sort of strategy since it relies to much on leaving yourself open for attack and having your graveyard be filled to start with!"

"So, what you're saying is that you can only really win this game if you spend a lot of money on expansions. Are you making money, or losing money on this card game? You're like a kingpin who is addicted to his own product, and that's the best case scenario."

L wouldn't put it past Bakura to do this type of thing for free, after all.

"Aaa... that's not how it is at all... You can win with any sort of deck, it just helps to have a pool of different cards so you can build a proper strategy..." Bakura pointed out. "And hopefully we're making money on it, but Keroro-san's in charge of the business end of things..."

"Then he'll make money on it. I think you've been played, Bakura."

"Eh?" Bakura blinked. "What do you mean? Keroro-san's not a cheat...."

"How do you know? What has he ever done to make you feel that he is anything but a cheat?"

"He hasn't done anything to suggest he is..." Bakura countered. "Besides... if Keroro-san were trying to be a cheat, he'd have let it slip already. He's a horrible liar and no good at secrets...."

"So, you don't remember when he and his partner were trying to sell people all that defective and broken merchandise."

Bakura blinked. What was--

"...You mean the sale after the earthquake?"

"Yes, that time. Unless there was another one," L sighed wearily. He did not sound like he'd be surprised.

So for your advanced knowledge: He did make Dark Necrofear 2.0. Current plan: Ouija board strategy!

L's going for an infinite regenerativity strategy (playing cards that let him draw more, etc)

This is going to be fun for them both, innit? :D
