EVENT: Witch Attack on the City!

Characters: Everyone and anyone
Location: Anywhere in Death City!
Rating: PG-13
Time: August 23
Description: There's a Witch attack on the city and, to make matters worse, there's a dangerous individuals while Meister powers go completely out of control

The evening before there had been a PSA going around the network and the radio to watch out for an individual causing trouble in the city and a reminder to please stay indoors if possible.

Then around midnight something distinctly...strange happens. At first, Weapons probably won't notice, because it's only Meisters who suddenly find their powers flaring up for no apparent reason even when they're not trying to use them.

There's a two hour window where the abilities become stronger until it's practically impossible to control before the alarms in the city sound.

Kishin Eggs have been spotted entering the city in droves and this time they haven't come alone...

Diablo reveled in the sheer terror the pitiful human displayed. That pleasure rumbled in his chest while he watched as flesh was torn from the man's arms. The metallic scent of human blood filled his nostrils. That fear he gave was beautiful to the demon, and his burning gaze fixated on the way that the man's fears created the small black bugs to crawl out of the many deep injuries he was inflicting on himself. The man screamed, the sound piercing through even the panic and terror flooding the area around them, and Diablo continued to watch in satisfaction when the body began to convulse and yet the human still dug out his own skin and flesh.

It was true beauty for one such as himself, and Diablo took extreme pleasure in devouring that rush of fear before that soul emerged with his dying breath. Diablo reached out to take the soul, savouring the feel of the fear still trembling inside of it before he brought it up to him and ate it. The power flowed through his body causing it to tremble in desire. He needed more, craved it, and he would devour every last human soul he could to bring this world to ashes.

Movement caught the Lord of Terror's attention, and he pulled his glowing gaze away from his dying victim and towards where his new prey had offered himself. His large form swung around to face the human, unmindful of the weapon that seemed to sprout from the man's arm. It wasn't the first time he had seen such a transformation, and it was hardly as impressive as the many he had witnessed back in Sanctuary.

His entire body shifted as his torso pushed out beyond where his hips and legs were. The long tail swished behind unhinded by anything else as his hulking form looked bulky and slow when he first picked up his pace to close the distance between them, but there was a litheness within his form that spoke of one who had fought countless battles over multiple millennia.

When the man finally struck out, Diablo had every intention of bringing his sword-like bone protruding from the back of his wrist up to block the attack.

Genesis was right in choosing to go in for the kill. Eating innocent souls was a grave offense against what Shibusen expected from its guests. And if this terror was left to keep going, he may as well be right on the way to becoming another Kishin.

Diablo parrying his attack wasn't going to deter Genesis. Rather, he was more fired up, and perhaps a bit egged on by voices in his mind: the voice of the Black Blood within him, telling him to become stronger and to win this battle on his own.

But what he didn't expect was a nightmare beginning to seep into his mind, making him slowly imagine himself going through what he had hated most: degradation. Still, he tried to keep on and fight.

Humans were always so predictable. Their obvious reactions to their flawed sense of justice and life made them just as predictable as the stagnant archangels from the High Heavens. It only served to play them right into his hands just as this foolish bag of flesh was doing.

Diablo's chest rumbled with a dark chuckle when their 'blades' met. His Wavelength rippled out from the Demon Lord to the mortal as it began to embed itself within this fool's mind to draw on his deepest and darkest fears. Diablo's eyes glowed brightly while the world around them seemed to fall into darkness. His own form went black with shadows before he disappeared entirely from Genesis' view.

Instead the SOLDIER was left in what appeared to be the streets of Death City that were smeared with blood and had bodies strewn all over the road. The SOLDIER's fear with degradation only amplified after that leaving his worst thoughts to draw from his mind and become a reality.

[ooc: Feel free to have Angeal turn up in this thread at any time. Now would be good if you were wanting to do anything with that, otherwise Edgeworth would work as well!]

"What in the goddess' name...?" Genesis had to suddenly stop and look around when he realized that the foe he wanted to face had totally disappeared and left him in the same street as earlier except strewn with bodies and reeking of death. Did he fail? Did he make a misstep and let the fiend go?

All he knew now was that there was nothing but death around him-- the bloody remains of a losing war. Genesis looked down at his hands then, and noticed another frightening fact: the degradation was back. But this was no madness illusion he could easily shake off. Instead, this felt vividly real: making his skin crawl and mind race for easy solutions.

Of course. Sephiroth. He'd help him. They were friends now, weren't they? He ran away in search of him, not realizing that by doing so, he was running aimless circles around Diablo.

Finding Genesis, of course, was not easy in this crowd. Sure, Edgeworth's Soul Talk was now so powerful that anyone who heard him speak obeyed him and stood aside and stopped panicking, but it was hard to give specific stragglers orders when other people could hear and go with the flow. Edgeworth had to resort to whispering at certain points. Not only that, using his ability made it difficult to run; commands seemed to take a lot out of him.

It didn't help that Genesis had not sent a single message to Edgeworth updating him about what was going on outside, either. He wove through the streets, not daring to take on any kishin, not without his Weapon. At least whenever he came across a group of kishin, it had become so easy to tell them to turn against each other and finish each other off instead of targeting him. Single kishin were ordered to find and kill their fellows. The price he paid was staggering, however. Every so often he had to stop and catch his breath. Soul Talk had never drained him like this before.

But it was so much easier to find a twenty-foot tall guest causing havoc in the streets, and by finding Diablo, Edgeworth had found Genesis. Before he could call out to the Weapon - who, for some reason, was just running circles around Diablo - glimpses of darkness and the sensation of the ground rumbling beneath his feet interrupted him. Edgeworth's hand flew to his saber, but the cold feeling of dread was seeping into him as he remembered a broken elevator...

In the nightmare he was caught up in, Genesis eventually caught a glimpse of someone he recognized: Edgeworth! Immediately, he made a run for him, forgetting about the bodies strewn around him and the destruction he had failed to stop. He wanted his body back. He needed to know what had happened.

In desperation, he calls out his partner's name and reaches out to grab him. However, it appeared as if Edgeworth wanted to do nothing with him. Within the nightmare, Genesis saw his very own partner reject him and choose not to help him. His heart sank at that and terror gripped him further.

At the same time, a voice began to bubble up from within him. He knew this sound. It was all too familiar: the lulling sound of Jenova's voice calling to him, wanting him to give into her.

Come now my child. I can heal you. You'll be far more powerful with me by your side. I won't ever abandon you.

Edgeworth, on the other hand, could no longer see Genesis. The earth was shaking in a terrible quake, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead as his vision threatened to dim. He knew that if he didn't stand his ground, he would faint, and be of no use to anyone, least of all Genesis. His knees trembled as his world was rocked by an earthquake, and as if that wasn't enough, his surroundings darkened as if a shadow had been cast over them, and the sun was switched off like a lamp. Adding more insult to insult, the darkness fused into the inside of a still elevator.

He was sure this was an illusion. A small part of him was sure it was the reason why Genesis had been running around aimlessly. But fear was washing over him now, more like a wave breaking onto the shore than a trickle, and it made concentrating difficult. Edgeworth put his hands over his face, and sank to his knees, which had given way at last. The earthquake raged on, the walls of the elevator beginning to crack.

Desperately he reached up for the buttons and pressed the one that would open the elevator, but to no avail. To anyone else, it would look like Edgeworth was kneeling and raising his arm in an odd gesture. He jabbed what he thought was the correct button over and over, his breathing becoming ragged. Right now, he was too terrified to speak, to say anything lest he trigger another facet of the illusion.

He couldn't be in an elevator right now. He was saving Genesis, right? He was supposed to be in the same place as before...

Genesis didn't know what to be more afraid of: that voice in his head or the nightmare before him with his body rotting and those he had trusted leaving him. However, if there was one thing he was certain of, it was that he could still try to hold on to whatever he believed in. It was what kept him alive during his degradation, after all.

And thus, hopefully blind faith could help him overcome this challenge.

Still trying to keep a hold on his sanity and his control over his own actions, he cries out to Edgeworth once more, yelling with all his might to get to his meister. They were partners, he knew him well, despite the fact that they weren't the closest of associates, he knew well enough that the other man wouldn't dare leave him without a good reason to. And thus, he puts all his faith into his yelling, assured that in some way, somehow, Edgeworth would come for him.

When it became clear that pressing an imaginary button wouldn't work, Edgeworth groaned in frustration and disappointment. Of course it wouldn't work. He wasn't really in an elevator, and had to hang on to that small part of his fear-addled brain which remained rooted to reality. Edgeworth sat on his heels, continuing to shiver as bits of concrete and metal began to rain down from the ceiling and the cracks in the elevator started to widen as the earthquake raged on.

He had to break the illusion before it broke him. But how? Closing his eyes so he would not see his two worst fears, he thought of the last thing he saw in Death City, where he really was. Edgeworth thought of Genesis, and the strange guest causing widespread chaos...and it was as if a dam had been opened within his soul, all his power concentrated into a single, loud word:

"OBJECTION!"

The elevator shattered completely. Edgeworth instinctively covered his head, but no debris fell onto him. The ground was no longer moving, and when he opened his eyes, he was back in Death City. Instead of waiting to see if his Meister ability affected Genesis as well, he cried out to him. "Genesis, you're being tricked! It's only an illusion!"

For a while, Genesis was perhaps trapped in the darkest space in his mind, unable to move forward, unable to console himself or shake away from the madness that threatened to take over his mind. However, suddenly, there was a burst of clarity, and a strong voice cut through his darkness: Edgeworth's voice.

And at that very instant, it felt as if the nightmare fell apart and Genesis could finally get away from the guest that was causing chaos. This was it, he was free. He saw Edgeworth calling to him and ran straight to him, only wanting to focus on him alone: his partner who so efficiently cut through all the madness within him and surrounding him.

Once he reached him, grabbed his hand, he took on his Weapon form, finding solace in resonance.

Thank you.

His soul murmured out to his Meister's own. The black blood in him was still singing, but now that Edgeworth had shaken him out of the nightmare, he could focus again and keep it at bay.

Edgeworth let Genesis take his hand, and gripped the hilt of the Rapier once the Weapon transformed. But using his Meister ability left him exhausted, as if he had not slept the previous night, or had just run a marathon. He staggered to his feet, swayed, and dropped onto the ground with a groan, breathing hard. Those last words he shouted seemed to have used up all his energy.

My Meister ability is far stronger than before, but it drains me very quickly...

The prosecutor lifted his head, then slowly attempted to lift the rest of himself up till he was sitting on his heels again. Feebly he resonated with Genesis, still clutching the Rapier in his hands.

I...apologize...

No. It's all right. We need to survive this invasion... just survive...

As much as it hurt Genesis' pride to concede, it was definitely for certain that they couldn't go through more of the fight any longer. Dealing with the nightmare and the Black Blood already wore them both out. And if they were to push themselves any harder, they could run the risk of having the Black Blood pass on and consume them.

Edgeworth tried to get up one more time. This time, though his knees shook, he remained standing, and hurriedly began to walk away. They couldn't fight the strange guest, let alone the invading kishin, in their current condition - a truth that was extremely hard to accept for Edgeworth. With his Meister ability impossible to control and his and Genesis' nightmarish illusions, not to mention the possible effects on the Black Blood...

A kishin egg suddenly stepped out, blocking their path and hissing. He did not raise the Rapier, but gasped out, "Destroy your fellow kishin." The creature scuttled away without any further ado, pointedly ignoring a passerby who was so obviously crouching behind a trash can and shivering.

Anyone who listens to me will be compelled to obey. I can turn any kishin we encounter against its own kind...

Edgeworth leaned against the wall of a nearby alley and paused. Every command would be exhausting him, but right now, he had to use the amplified properties to their advantage...even if it cost him. It is our only option if we are to escape unscathed. I have to use my ability.

Try at least to conserve it, partner... just until we've found a safe haven...

Genesis was also feeling his body terribly weighed down with every passing moment. And he was sure that this was going to affect their resonance. But even so, he does his best to use the last amount of his strength to supplement Edgeworth's energy-- at least lessen the toll each command he gives takes upon his body.

After all, this was why they were partners. They worked together. They won battles together. And if they were to lose, they would lose together. In this case, it was imperative that they must survive together.
