Location: Somewhere in DC. He doesn't know either.

Rating: PG-13 cause you can never tell for sure.

Time: March 31st all day

Description: Yamazaki wants to discover the city with a map, but the map is not too helpful.







Here comes the guy, wearing a pair of black jeans and a t-shirt with the picture of a waving alien on it and he's staring at a map which he holds in his hand. He looks distracted and lost. Do with him what you please.

[Amused, Mello points towards the one landmark visible from almost anywhere in the city: Shibusen.]

If someone could deduce that we even have a plan, much less what it is, only from seeing us talking, they're a better detective than anyone I've ever met. And I know the best.

Yes, you see him in the mirror every morning. [2/7 sarcasm and 5/7 admiration.]

Yamazaki looks at Mello and reluctantly reaches his hand to his face. He stands for a moment then his hand falls back as he turns away in confusion.

There...there's chocolate on your chin.

[A rare moment of modesty from Mello, who tends to be immune to sarcasm he doesn't originate, until he's distracted by Zaki touching him, and rubs at his chin. What was that?

Going on as if that didn't happen is clearly the only option.]

I had someone else in mind.

Yes...me too. [He thinks of his girlfriend. What the heck is he trying to do exactly?]

Are you saying there's a detective in the town who's better than you?

[want_the_world]

That's right.

[He doesn't know Zaki well enough to trust him with L's identity or any details, but an offhand mention can't do any harm.]

Were you going to scope out the restricted section at the library?

[anpan_tan]

[It's good that Mello doesn't mention L cause it's highly possible that Yamazaki would give up on the whole mission if he knew Mello was an acquaintance of the creepy guy with his creepy cat.]

I was on my way to the library to look around. Do you want to come with me? Let's pretend we're science enthusiastic university students!

[want_the_world]

We can scope it out.

But we already have a reason to be there, as interested guests. Never tell a lie when the truth offers just as many advantages.

I guess you're right. We're interested guests, yes...

[Yamazaki just laughs, he can't help it, but Mello is a funny guy.]

And what are we interested in, exactly? Space technology?

[want_the_world]

[Zaki was caught up in the fun of subterfuge, Mello thought, wanting to create a backstory for his lie.]

The simpler, the better. If anyone asks--which I doubt they will--we could say we're interested in the history of Death City.

[Which would give them a reason to want to see the restricted area, but room to be surprised they're not allowed to.]

O-Okay, if you think it's better we'll say that. You're the brain.

[It looks like Mello can be funny only accidentally. Which is absolutely OK.]

[Mello might think of himself as the one with a sense of humor, but that's only in comparison to L and Near, which is rather like being the sanest one in the asylum: you're still in the asylum.]

We shouldn't seem overly interested in the restricted section, but I want to get a first-hand look at their current security there.

I'm sorry...

[Yamazaki had lived in an asylum-like world before he came to DC so now he feels like arriving home. He takes Mello's hand without thinking.]

Alright, we'll do everything as you want to. Just be careful, I didn't do this kind of thing too often.

[Yamazaki massively hates the DeMun for making him act like a doujinshi hero]

Don't be! I love it when someone can fluster Mello!

[Mello pulls his hand away instinctively, more bewildered than offended. He doesn't think it means anything; casual touch isn't something he does, but Zaki seemed to do it out of habit.]

I'm. Not the touchy-feely type.

[Boundary established. Moving on.]

But I am the type who did this kind of thing often.

Neither am I.

[Yamazaki wonders why he took the other guy's hand but what really makes him worried is the fact he actually liked it. Something freaky thing is happening to him and he doesn't like it, so he hides his hand to his pockets.]

Er...what kind of things did you do often, Mello-kun?

[He's still confused a bit.]

[-kun? Mello raises an eyebrow at that, though he supposes it's technically correct.]

Fought bad guys.

[He smirks, because it is mostly a joke.]

Snuck into places I wasn't supposed to be. Found out things I wasn't supposed to know.

[anpan_tan]

[It looks like Mello doesn't like to be called Mello-kun. It's OK for Yamazaki. Alright, maybe it's not totally OK, but he can deal with it.]

What you're saying tells me that your kind of a bad guy yourself. Do you fight yourself a lot?

Heh, no.

That was the only way to be a good guy, in my backasswards world. The ones who were supposed to be the good guys--the cops, a lot of governments--had wimped out.

[anpan_tan]

Being a bad guy was the only way to be a good guy? This is...

[He chuckles again. Is it possible that Mello does have some sense of humor???]

I'm a cop, too. If our Shinsengumi was there we'd capture the notebookworm, for sure!

[And pigs can fly.]

[Mello will freely acknowledge that the NPA was a good police force, but they were useless against Kira when he was right under their noses.]

The police gave up in my world, or were forced to. That's what having the power of fear over almost the entire population gets you. The only way it was possible to oppose the guy I was after was to be on the wrong side of the law.

So everyone was scared of that lowlife because he could use a pen and he knew how to write...Maybe I'm wrong, but he was worse than everyone else, he was even worse than the ones he killed. What kind of man hides himself behind a book when he wants to finish someone off, He should've give a chance for his victims to fight! He should've show them his face to remember him when they meet in hell!

Or am I wrong?

[Yamazaki's not sure about it. Mello is able to turn the whole world upside down with his words.]

[Mello has to smile at how vehement Zaki is.]

You're not wrong.

I'm willing to concede that he might have started with good intentions. Might have.

[He's aware that Yagami's days as Kira began when the bastard was younger than Mello is now, still a student. He doesn't consider that an excuse.]

But being handed that kind of power devolves very quickly into doing whatever you have to do to keep it.

[Seeing Mello's smile Yamazaki's heart suddenly throbs but he ignores it. It's always a good thing for him to hear from someone that he didn't say something stupid. But in his imagination Light is a middle-aged loser who exactly knew what he did and he did it out of pure evilness.]

Would you do the same if you had a book like that? Could you kill people without knowing why did they do what they did, even if it was considered as a crime?

[Mello made use of the notebook for more pragmatic reasons--three reasons, actually, since he seldom has fewer than that for the things he does. But he doubts Zaki will appreciate the necessity of what was, at face value, taking out his rival's operatives.]

Only an arrogant child would use it like that. Someone immature enough to think people are good or evil, with nothing in between, and arrogant enough to think he can be the judge of who falls into which category. I may be conceited, but I can see shades of gray.

You don't say Mello's read that book...:P

[No more chocolate for Mello if he tells Yamazaki he used the notebook without any reason Yamazaki could understand himself. He doesn't see the shades of gray, either. his world is too colorful for that.]

A child? Do you mean he's a child? It's...so sad. What kind of world was where you live if a child had to think he'd be the only one who could make that world a better place...?

[For a few seconds he feels sorry for Light.]

Ha, luckily (?) for him, he died before it came out

He started when he was still in high school. And he made the world a worse place. There was crime there, of course. Every world has it. I've got no reason to believe it was anything other than average for a modern society. That's why I say he's immature. He thought he could force people to be good. He thought killing every criminal he heard of would mean a world without crime. But all it means is a world where everyone's afraid.

Imagine that you're falsely accused of a crime. In my world, if your name and face appeared in a news report about it, you could die at any moment. No trial, no chance to defend yourself, no evidence needed for Kira except the accusation.

And when someone I care about tried to stop him, the bastard killed him. He's the reason I'm dead, too.
