Light Yagami | Meister
....a compatible partner who is not L.
Amazing resonance or not, he refuses to accept a weapon who, in life, had been dedicated to tripping him up and undermining him at every turn. For this to work, he feels he'll need someone he, at the LEAST, can feign a bond of respect with.
After neatly filling out the nametag he is offered, Light stands with it affixed to his chest near the others who also seem to be awaiting a partner.
Light Yagami | Meister
Excuse me...
[He tried to begin a conversation with him, hoping that the newcomer is not in love with himself.]
[Action]
Good morning. Can I help you?
[Action]
Er...I'm Yamazaki. A weapon. Would you mind practicing with me a bit? Someone said I need to practice resonating. And I'm not good enough in transformation yet.
[Why did this man give him those annoying Okita-vibes?]
[Action]
He's eager...and that was good. Though, then again, Misa was also eager. Hopefully it would turn out that Yamazaki had more qualities than that.]
I'd like that. [he said, betraying none of his thoughts with the pleasant tone of voice he put on] I could use the practice myself.
[Action]
[No, he was wrong when he thought of this young man as a second Okita. He won't crash trough the wall with him!]
[Action]
Besides, it seems like a strange thing to laugh at someone over given the circumstances, don't you think?
[Amusement had not really been forefront on his mind the first time he'd seen someone turn into a weapon. Though, that had had much to do with who it was, and the circumstances at the time.]
[Action]
[And so Yamazaki turned to a sword. He disappeared in a light blue cloud, Light heard a loud, popping sound and a sword fell down from the cloud. The sword yelled at Light.]
Catch me!
[Action]
His arm jolts out to catch the sword's hilt before it can hit the ground, his sharpened reflexes from years of tennis-playing apparently still serving him well.]
[Action]
[Yes, Yamazaki was dropped more than one time in the past in his weapon form, and although he didn't feel pain when he was a sword, his pride just sceamed against being treated like a stick.]
I...Thank you. It's good to be in your hands.
[What if he knew this trustworthy young man and that coward 'notebookworm' who used a notebook for killing were the same person!]
no subject
...that was until he spotted the word "Meister" on Light's name tag and couldn't help but stare with something akin to horror.
...no wonder Ryuzaki had been in such a good mood... Crap!
[Action]
Looks like I'm not the only one hoping to keep Ryuzaki at bay...
The statement, however, never quite made it to the open as he blinked at the nametag Bakura wore, proclaiming himself to be a weapon. Which made...no sense at all, given their previous conversation.
"It doesn't surprise me he'd try to force things to work in his favor even if it was impossible." Light said at last, approaching. "He's been that way as long as I've known him."
[Action]
...wait. What? Why was Light acting like this was almost resuming a previous conversation? They hadn't spoken before since he had rearri---
The thought died at the all too easy and immediate explanation. What was the Voice doing?
...and more importantly, what was he supposed to do now?
"Eh?" he blinked, expression showing no sign of the inner conflict, only mild confusion. "Who?"
...as if he needed the question answered...
[Action]
A few somethings, actually. The tone of voice was a far cry from the boy he'd spoken to in the park the other evening, as was the demeanor. Though, Light was positive it was Bakura...one didn't forget that sharkfin white hair easily.
Was he playing dumb, given the current company and setting?
"Nevermind." Light said, pushing the previous conversation out of hand. "It's not important."
All right, then, he'd let him choose the topic.
[Action]
"Aaa, sou?" Bakura rubbed the back of his neck. "Just thinking aloud?" he guessed with a warm smile.
[Action]
His tone had become terse, not appreciating that he had offered an out for the only person he'd met so far who seemed to share his open disdain of a certain detective who was, in turn, seeming to be trying his best to make him look stupid to whoever might be listening in.
[Action]
... wait a second... Of course, why didn't he---!
"Ne, you wouldn't have happened to have seen my brother around here, have you?" he asked, tone still pleasant and light. The Voice'd be annoyed to have been called that, but since he was already obviously up to something... "You'd know if you'd seen him, people mistake us for each other a lot."
[Action]
The question brings Light up short. In his own world, the notion of evil twins was tired and cliche, though...he needed to keep reminding himself that the rules that applied there did not, necessarily, apply in Death City. A doppleganger would not, by far, be the strangest thing he'd seen.
The longer he studied the young man in front of him, the more that, despite their physical similarities, Light became certain this was not the one he'd spoken to in the park. Bakura had been confident in both his body language and his assertions, and this one...not so much.
His options seemed to be limited to giving him the benefit of the doubt on the matter of his identity or drawing unwanted attention if he attempted to ask questions, making the choice obvious.
"Sorry, that must be the case." He relented after a moment of consideration. "You two really do look alike."

Re: Light Yagami | Meister
He rarely makes it to morning training anyway, though; since finding that he has decent resonance with Gamzee, he hasn't seen a need. However, Light's arrival changes everything, as it tends to, making L's life that much more difficult and exhilarating.
"'Light Yagami.'" He reads the name tag in a tone that managed to just border on patronizing, not even giving Light a chance to react to his presence after effectively sneaking up on the younger man. "You know... you used the name 'Light Asahi' the last time you were here. Some individuals might have questions about that, so I thought I'd let you know."
Offering pertinent information too late to be entirely useful seems to be a trait L shares with a certain Shinigami that had also tormented Light, once upon a time.
[Action]
It was entirely too much to ask that, for one morning, L leave him to his own devices. And yet, all the same, Light couldn't bring himself to be surprised at this point.
"If Kira isn't here, then it hardly makes sense to lie about my name, Ryuzaki. I'm sure people can accept that circumstances tend to change over five years."
He would be damned before he gave L the satisfaction of watching him squirm, despite the fact that, inwardly, he was seething. What other information was being withheld from him, he wondered? How many more skeletons of his past stay here were going to come shambling out of the closet to trip him up at inopportune moments?
Aside from that, however, if he was being expected to take part in a war, then he fully intended to do what he could to win it. If it so happened that Kira could not save his own world from desolation until Light Yagami saved this one, then so be it.
[Action]
That was far from true, of course... but L wasn't exactly a stranger to the fine art of withholding information.
"I don't suppose you've had any luck finding a partner..." The detective said languidly, clearly expecting one answer alone. How could anything top what he and Light had achieved that first night, after all?
[Action]
Furthermore, Light doubted L even knew what the concept of a real partnership was, given the way he'd treated the Task Force. In the middle of a war, the last thing he needed was to be armed with a weapon that would pick and choose its battles, see fit to test him at random intervals, and carefully judge how he fought all the while, deciding whether or not it gave merit to his suspicions.
[Action]
His expression was very nearly predatory as he regarded Light for a brief moment. Then it faded, leaving his face bland and childish once more.
"I've experienced a lot of failed attempts at resonance since arriving, Light. My successes have been lackluster, with one exception. Surely you see why I can't just drop this. Or, perhaps you'll have to experience failure yourself before you'll understand.... in which case, I can be patient, of course."
[Action]
It didn't surprise him whatsoever that L had trouble resonating, given how poorly he seemed to fit in with humanity in general.
"Really. Do you know of anyone else who's had so much trouble finding a partner?" While a genuine question, it was barbed.
Don't assume I'll have the same problems here that you do. I'm not the one who has to hide behind a computer, L. Unlike you, I function just fine in society.
[Action]
The memory of resonating with Light, though... that was worth it, L thought, even in hindsight. In fact, the memory became more vibrant and desirable as more time passed.
"Truly perfect resonance is very rare. Of course it would not be an unusual problem to find someone who works quite well, Light."
