[OPEN] Mission 156

Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.

The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.

The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!

Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

That did sound quite terrible. It was good then that the teams out there were doing better than before if they were seeing some of the lesser extent of injuries. This did not mean that a common condition seen here could not become life threatening. So long as they remained on top of everything then they would not have to deal with a worsening case here. The only way he could see getting those more serious injuries was through being careless and taking on too much. He would not assume that anybody here would resort to that if they wanted a mission to go well.

People were unpredictable and made errors all the time. It was their job to make sure it did not come to that. As far as he had seen, they were all cooperative enough. He blinked for a moment then acknowledged the gratitude with a nod.

"...It is no trouble. I can teach you how to prepare and administer it when we are not in the middle of a mission if you would like."

"I would like that," he agreed affably as he looked out over what could be seen of the medic camp from their position. There was a lull in the number of fighters trickling back from the peak, thankfully, or else they wouldn't be able to stand around talking like this.

"The focus of my learning was on treatment of open wounds and broken bones. Physical trauma of the kind someone could get in battle," Kurapika continued. Those were the injuries Kuroro had been most likely to get, with the kind of recklessness he displayed while fighting with a weapon who could just heal him if he ever got injured.

He wondered who had been teaching him that. He did hear that others had been here before him and he had yet to question who they were. It was still unimportant to him though he could not help but consider it briefly every now and then. His eyes too searched the edge of the tents and beyond as if there would be another influx of patients. Even without it though, he would have to return to the side of a few of the ones he had in the other tents to make sure everything was going well.

Physical trauma was definitely more invasive than what he had been getting into with Rosalia. If she asked though then he would teach her what she wanted to know too. It kept him occupied here to have so many willing learners.

"It is not often you find somebody willing to learn that. People get squeamish when they realize what they have to deal with."

"It's a good thing I'm not squeamish, then," Kurapika replied with a small smile and a self-conscious shrug. "Although I think it has more to do with me being used to fighting than with my stomach's constitution. And need can be a strong motivator," he added in a murmur as he turned back to the crates of supplies and absentmindedly nudged a misaligned case back into order with its fellows.

"I have a healing ability which triggers on intent and works through visualization, so I thought it would be prudent to learn exactly how the healing process goes."

Yes. A warrior would be able to understand that they had to be able to think beyond a hemorrhaging wound in front of them and simply do what they need to do. When one became a surgeon, they learned how to not hesitate in the face of what most would consider on par with a horror film. It was easy for him to get into a routine with more devastating wounds though it never did make the images in his head disappear long after the fact.

It was never something one could easily forget. It was something that ended up haunting the dreams of even the toughest of people that insisted they could handle that. A warrior could easily be compared to a surgeon or anybody that has dedicated their lives to helping others in grave situations. He was intrigued now though that he mentioned having a certain ability.

"A healing ability?"
ih8spiders: (how curious)

[personal profile] ih8spiders 2012-10-17 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"Impossible to do without a meister I'm highly compatible with," he confided, "and can only be used when I'm in weapon form, which means that I can't heal myself." It was the reverse of what he could do back home; his nen could only be used to speed up physical recovery for himself, and he'd never found the time or the inclination to see if he could do it for others using the releasing aspect...

"My weapon form is a pair of short swords connected by a chain. The chain has to be wrapped around the body part I want to heal, and then I need to resonate with whomever's wielding me. I use our combined soul wavelengths to coax the injury to recover faster--so I'm handier with wounds, not so much diseases and conditions like hypothermia, since I can't visualize how the body would recover from those." Kurapika added in a light tone more suited to telling anecdotes, but it sounded slightly deliberate, as if he was regretting mentioning it and wanted to make it sound less remarkable than it could be to people in their positions.

"That would still be helpful in a place like this though. I imagine though that it is difficult to find somebody compatible."

He was surprised to hear that a pair of swords connected by a chain would be able to heal wounds, but perhaps that had something to do with what he was able to do back in his own world. In a place like this with injuries that would likely occur in battle then it sounded like having that ability out in the field would be useful. If he was in weapon form, it was possible he would not have to be concerned with healing himself.

Though it was unfortunate he could not heal everything, expecting somebody to be able to heal anything would make other weapons technically useless. It would be too easy to be able to heal everything though there would perhaps be a consequence for that to off-set such an ability. The person wielding him would still have to be able to fight though leaving him with only being able to find experts or those willing to learn.

"I suppose finding the right person to partner with is difficult enough in itself."

Kurapika shook his head. "My partner sought me out, so it actually wasn't that hard for me... It's finding a new partner after he got returned that's proving to be difficult."

There was a lot more to that story, of course--the interval was an agonizing process of getting himself to stop wanting to kill Kuroro every morning upon waking up, and then forcing himself to accept their partnership, and learning to tolerate and even like it--but that wasn't something he needed to talk about.

"Other people's experiences are probably different, though. Don't let the perceived difficulties discourage you," the blond added after a pause.

"That sounds like a lucky find as well as awful luck..."

He imagined it would be quite difficult to get over somebody one trusted getting returned to their world and leaving the other behind. In that way, he felt relieved he did not yet make a connection to the point of being a permanent partner here.

"...I doubt I would be the type here to even consider truly partnering up with anybody. My place is in these tents with my patients. I...ventured out with a weapon earlier. I am not cut out for combat."

Kurapika looked up then, surprise and sudden understanding dawning on his face. With how long he'd been in this world, it was ridiculously easy to forget that the people he was now working with wouldn't have the information he'd started to take for granted.

"True, the meister-weapon arrangement is meant for combat, but you can't force that role on pairs with weapons who aren't the offensive type. Support-type weapons can go with supportive roles, instead. There was a doctor before who partnered with a weapon who took the form of a healing spray. They were true medics, in that sense--they never really went out into the field to fight."

It was something he could not bring himself to admit, but he was somewhat irritated with the idea that he could not do much beyond healing in a place like this. It was not something he would ever give up in favor of learning to fight, but if there was an incident then he wanted to be ready for anything. The topic of his involvement beyond the tents was not something he assumed would bring him more answers, certainly not those as useful as this during his first mission. He was grateful to have it.

"I went out there with the intention of searching for people that might be unable to make it back to the tents. The one with me that could transform was not meant for support, but instead for offense. I suppose it was best to find that out then than going too far out and realizing we would not be able to get back if she had been meant for healing. That is very lucky for that doctor to have found somebody turning into such a useful form."

That was lucky for that doctor to have found a partner that turned into something so useful for healing. At least the skill he had acquired since coming here could be used without resonating with another. Perhaps that was defeatist to believe he would not be able to find somebody compatible enough to help even slightly more than he already was but he could not help that.

The other boy's answers were odd, and felt almost conflicting. Kurapika tilted his head, and the momentary distraction of trying to figure out how to best answer was enough to keep him focused for a while longer. It helped, having a person to talk to, even though the topic of partnership tended to trigger the darkest thoughts, but as long as he stuck to thinking how to help an obviously troubled colleague, he didn't have to deal with the madness liberally dusting the mountainside.

"You got here just a few days ago, and this is your first time participating in a major mission. Whatever happened out there, it's not anything that can be taken against you." Kurapika paused and smiled faintly. "It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do, in light of what I could do, and I made a lot of mistakes."

He knew that his answer would be contradictory in some manner. He was conflicted himself over what he exactly wanted out of this place and what it wanted out of him. Perhaps it was the wrong sort of subject to be on right now. They should just be focusing on working with the unfortunate people that had been injured so far and those to come. His troubles were nothing compared to those that had been injured and wished only to be out there once more to defend the rest of them.

He gave him a nod in gratitude for their conversation. It would leave him much to consider.

"I will keep that in mind. I suppose I should go back to one of the other tents to see if anybody needs further medical attention. I have a feeling that those we have now will not be the last during this mission."
ih8spiders: (if you put it that way)

[personal profile] ih8spiders 2012-11-08 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He was surprised to find himself feeling lighter all of a sudden; happiness at apparently having helped someone just by talking. The past few months of idling and not doing anything that felt worthwhile to him had weighed down on him more terribly than expected.

Kurapika nodded back, showing his thanks in his acknowledgement.

"You're right. I'm going to check on the mirror to make sure we're still online." He paused and grinned more widely, a self-deprecating gesture. "I'm getting the feeling that we're alike in the way we think. Don't brood too much; it will just cause you more problems in the long run."
crs01: (very small smirk)

[personal profile] crs01 2012-11-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
He had a feeling that the brooding issue would just be something that came up far more frequently than he would like. It would come with the territory though as he was just not one to convey emotions like most. He was not certain how to react at a smile like that, but that was something good he supposed. If he was able to get that kind of reaction then he did something appropriate.

There was nothing he could say response to a smile. It would be too awkward for either of them he was sure. He once again bowed his head slightly before finally turning away. He supposed...that he felt better as well as this encounter. Despite himself, he quirked the smallest of smiles unseen to Kurapika before returning to his mostly stony appearance.

"...Perhaps I should work on that."

With that, he walked away towards his previous tents and the patients waiting for him.
