[OPEN] Mission 156
Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.
The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.
The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!
Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

Physical trauma was definitely more invasive than what he had been getting into with Rosalia. If she asked though then he would teach her what she wanted to know too. It kept him occupied here to have so many willing learners.
"It is not often you find somebody willing to learn that. People get squeamish when they realize what they have to deal with."
no subject
"I have a healing ability which triggers on intent and works through visualization, so I thought it would be prudent to learn exactly how the healing process goes."
no subject
It was never something one could easily forget. It was something that ended up haunting the dreams of even the toughest of people that insisted they could handle that. A warrior could easily be compared to a surgeon or anybody that has dedicated their lives to helping others in grave situations. He was intrigued now though that he mentioned having a certain ability.
"A healing ability?"
no subject
"My weapon form is a pair of short swords connected by a chain. The chain has to be wrapped around the body part I want to heal, and then I need to resonate with whomever's wielding me. I use our combined soul wavelengths to coax the injury to recover faster--so I'm handier with wounds, not so much diseases and conditions like hypothermia, since I can't visualize how the body would recover from those." Kurapika added in a light tone more suited to telling anecdotes, but it sounded slightly deliberate, as if he was regretting mentioning it and wanted to make it sound less remarkable than it could be to people in their positions.
no subject
He was surprised to hear that a pair of swords connected by a chain would be able to heal wounds, but perhaps that had something to do with what he was able to do back in his own world. In a place like this with injuries that would likely occur in battle then it sounded like having that ability out in the field would be useful. If he was in weapon form, it was possible he would not have to be concerned with healing himself.
Though it was unfortunate he could not heal everything, expecting somebody to be able to heal anything would make other weapons technically useless. It would be too easy to be able to heal everything though there would perhaps be a consequence for that to off-set such an ability. The person wielding him would still have to be able to fight though leaving him with only being able to find experts or those willing to learn.
"I suppose finding the right person to partner with is difficult enough in itself."
no subject
There was a lot more to that story, of course--the interval was an agonizing process of getting himself to stop wanting to kill Kuroro every morning upon waking up, and then forcing himself to accept their partnership, and learning to tolerate and even like it--but that wasn't something he needed to talk about.
"Other people's experiences are probably different, though. Don't let the perceived difficulties discourage you," the blond added after a pause.
no subject
He imagined it would be quite difficult to get over somebody one trusted getting returned to their world and leaving the other behind. In that way, he felt relieved he did not yet make a connection to the point of being a permanent partner here.
"...I doubt I would be the type here to even consider truly partnering up with anybody. My place is in these tents with my patients. I...ventured out with a weapon earlier. I am not cut out for combat."
no subject
"True, the meister-weapon arrangement is meant for combat, but you can't force that role on pairs with weapons who aren't the offensive type. Support-type weapons can go with supportive roles, instead. There was a doctor before who partnered with a weapon who took the form of a healing spray. They were true medics, in that sense--they never really went out into the field to fight."
no subject
"I went out there with the intention of searching for people that might be unable to make it back to the tents. The one with me that could transform was not meant for support, but instead for offense. I suppose it was best to find that out then than going too far out and realizing we would not be able to get back if she had been meant for healing. That is very lucky for that doctor to have found somebody turning into such a useful form."
That was lucky for that doctor to have found a partner that turned into something so useful for healing. At least the skill he had acquired since coming here could be used without resonating with another. Perhaps that was defeatist to believe he would not be able to find somebody compatible enough to help even slightly more than he already was but he could not help that.
no subject
"You got here just a few days ago, and this is your first time participating in a major mission. Whatever happened out there, it's not anything that can be taken against you." Kurapika paused and smiled faintly. "It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do, in light of what I could do, and I made a lot of mistakes."
no subject
He gave him a nod in gratitude for their conversation. It would leave him much to consider.
"I will keep that in mind. I suppose I should go back to one of the other tents to see if anybody needs further medical attention. I have a feeling that those we have now will not be the last during this mission."
no subject
Kurapika nodded back, showing his thanks in his acknowledgement.
"You're right. I'm going to check on the mirror to make sure we're still online." He paused and grinned more widely, a self-deprecating gesture. "I'm getting the feeling that we're alike in the way we think. Don't brood too much; it will just cause you more problems in the long run."
no subject
There was nothing he could say response to a smile. It would be too awkward for either of them he was sure. He once again bowed his head slightly before finally turning away. He supposed...that he felt better as well as this encounter. Despite himself, he quirked the smallest of smiles unseen to Kurapika before returning to his mostly stony appearance.
"...Perhaps I should work on that."
With that, he walked away towards his previous tents and the patients waiting for him.
