[OPEN] Earthquake Event

It's early in the morning -- just after morning training -- when the ground beneath Death City shakes violently in what most of you might recognize as an earthquake. It's not a particularly huge one for the more experienced of the guests, but it sends cracks shooting through the cobblestoned ground of Death City and up the sides of some buildings. A small handful of structures, mostly those that have been abandoned in the course of this war or the very old ones, take the most damage and topple over or crumble at their foundations.

The earthquake lasts no more than half a minute, but the vibrations and aftershocks last through the day. Death City's streets become full of holes, from those the size of apples to what could be described as deep ditches. The greatest damage, however, is the commercial sector, which becomes flooded as the waterways take damage and spill water into the streets. Shibusen's alarms blare out and quick, urgent orders to fix the waterways and search for the injured or anyone trapped in rubble filter in through all networks.

Hou... [He scratches his chin while he pieces it all together. When he's done, he bops both fists together.]

So what you're saying is that, because we are without knowledge of the original wish, we cannot be certain if BREW's intent is to end the conflict favorably for Shibusen or for Shibusen's enemies. Moreover, because of your experience as an apocalypse survivor, you've also come to the conclusion that there is a third way of ending the war, which would be the total annihilation of both sides. Furthermore, following that third possibility and your role here, you are worried that you have been brought here to either as a mentor to impart the knowledge necessary for survival now or... as a guide in a future in which, even with the war ended, we are all held prisoner on this world.

[He puts his hands back down and looks to Saya.] Is that correct?

[sayatakagi]

Yes. [She nods] Telling this possibility to anyone would make them burst out laughing. In my world, three weeks ago, if I was told we’d have to live through what I’ve lived, I’d laugh too. Until it happened… and then, there is nothing funny about it.

I don’t imagine anyone to take the same precautions as I do or expect it to happen at all. I never expected it either, after all. [she shakes her head] But every morning I look around and ask myself how long it’ll take until suddenly everyone is dying or eating each other. That’s why this option won’t ever leave my head.

[and she probably said too much already. Saya shakes her head] In the end, it doesn’t matter. Not yet, at least. And I hope it won’t matter ever, I really do.

[Minato just heard all of it, but he's not laughing. He reaches over and pats her twice on the back.] We'll keep it from mattering, Takagi-san. Don't worry. The End is never something inevitable. Our futures are not written down by fate to be followed unerringly towards disaster or despair.

[He maneuvers to step in front of her, to force her to stop and to look at him.] If BREW brought you because you're an apocalypse survivor, then it brought me for a different reason...

Saya-chan...

[And with the easiest, calmest smile.] I've stopped an apocalypse before.

[She stops, listening to him. At his last words, Saya stares at him for a moment, and then smiles just a little.]

Aha. I guess it’d have been nice to have someone like you in my world.

[socialbutterfly]

I'd have asked you out a lot... I'm not sure if you'd have enjoyed that.

[sayatakagi]

Tsu-! What the hell?! Don't say those things!

[she huffs and moves, so they'd keep walking]

[When she huffs past him, he falls into step beside her. He's trying not to laugh.]

What about here? Should I ask you out here, Takagi-san? To go out somewhere in a strange new world...

[sayatakagi]

Unless you mean going out for a walk, I'm really not interested. [my god why is this happening to her]

A walk would be fun... I'm really enjoying your company on this one. [He avoids some litter on the ground and very lightly brushes up against her.]

Walking through the rumble after an earthquake and after you put my dislocated shoulder back in place. It's interesting, I'll give you that.

[socialbutterfly]

It won't be easy to do better... but how about, instead of a walk, I ask you out to help me find a way to stop your worst case scenario from happening? [He lifts his eyebrows and gives her an earnest look. No jokes.]

I'm already looking for the answers, but I need someone like you to help me understand them...

[Saya glances at Minato for a moment , thinking about his words]

Am I being invited for some kind of research group?

[socialbutterfly]

[He nods, but in the spirit of full disclosure.] But we might go to some dangerous places... maybe... where your other skills will be necessary too.

[sayatakagi]

Before you tell me about all of the dangers I'll have to face and survive through, I have a simple question. [which would probably sound sort of... awkward given everything]

How much do you trust Shibusen?

[socialbutterfly]

Ah... [Minato was also here when there was... very open dissent against Shibusen. They used to have to sign pledges of loyalty...]

They're good people in over their heads. I trust them to do the right thing, but not really a good or thorough job of it.

[sayatakagi]

[Saya is glad not to have lived through that.]

So they don't know about your little investigation on the side?

[socialbutterfly]

They don't. [... What are you arriving at?]

[sayatakagi]

Hm. [She smirks just a little and tilts her head]

Fine. I will help you.


Now you can tell me about the dangerous things I'll have to live through in order to do so.

[socialbutterfly]

The first one will be trying to go abroad without telling Shibusen if you want to keep our investigation a secret...

[sayatakagi]

That will be difficult. They motorize the whole cit. [Saya looks around, searching for one of those cameras Near installed. When she finds one, she points at it]

They are everywhere. And besides, they will always know who enters and leaves the city through normal means. As for the mirrors, they also motorize them. [she pauses for a moment]

Unless you take a mission and wander off.

[socialbutterfly]

[The cameras don't bother him. He sees the one she indicates and nods at it.]

What if we had two purposes? A true purpose and an official purpose? [Like Mitsuru had with the original SEES.]

[sayatakagi]

That could work too, depending how you handle things. And be ready to ave answer for whatever sort of questions that arise from it. [Saya kicks a small rock, as she thinks things through]

How far are you into this?

[socialbutterfly]

[Minato looks skyward as he thinks.] Nine possible members plus partners. A mixture of fighters and investigators, but no healers or Calming Wavelengths.

Naoto wants to interview everyone soon so we know what to expect if any of us fall to Madness. After that, we can have our first meeting.

So my partner would be part of it as well. [understandable, though]

This is to be kept secret, right? How do you know the members won't talk?
