The discounted price came at a surprisingly good time. With the temperatures in Nevada climbing and no end in sight, it seems the owners of a Pacific Northwestern lodge took pity on the Meisters and Weapons of Shibusen and offered them a break from the heat. Despite it being July, the snow was still plentiful for skiing, snowboarding, sledding and innertubing! Dress warm, rent some gear or bring your own and have at it, they say!

From dawn to dusk, the mountain is lively on all sides, boarders and ski nuts to ski newbies enjoying a mid-week break while nature buffs take hikes over the trails on the greener side of the mountain, reachable by a short bus ride from the main lodge. Whether you're more into the powdery white or the vivid green, there's a spot for you to take a breather on Mount Hood.

The question is, where do you even start?

I don't believe so. I'm suspecting it could have something to do with my Persona. Until another Weapon becomes a Deathscythe, I have little else to go on.

Your persona? [Isn't that the thing Kanji had told her about, something they could summon in their own world?] But why do you think that might be the cause? That type of thing doesn't work here, does it?

It may be sealed, but it is a part of me still. Also, abilities that are sealed away appear to become unlocked by heavy doses of Madness.

Wait... You mean abilities might work again in certain circumstances? I'd never heard about that before. Some of my magic would be useful if it worked...

Those Madness chips that were being tested on several Guests some time ago showed it. [And they began killing people] Frankly, I'll keep my Persona sealed...

Um, Madness chips? I don't think I've heard about those either. [She'd been preoccupied around then with how Lezard had gotten a spear in the stomach during a fight with a shapeshifting spirit and had missed that rescue mission.] But you don't think it would help to be able to use such an ability again?

It's one of the new devices they came up with. I will not disclose the victims, but there are old news reports you can read up on from Chile.

[Lezard should watch it.] Perhaps, but it's not meant to be used against Kishin eggs. If my normal gun worked, that would be a different story.

They? [Victims...?] Are you saying witches created them? [She frowned. Perhaps, a trip to the library was in order after she got back to the city. She should try to see if there were any clues to peaceful witches, too...]

Even if exorcism didn't work on the demons here, I reckon my healing spells would help at least. It wasn't exactly like home but they could be cast when I turned into that book.

Yes. And it sounds like one of Medusa's ideas again... [After reading the records on black blood, that woman always seems to be behind anything Madness-related]

That's the benefits of being a Weapon. Though, I suppose if your magic did come back and was expended like Soul Menace, it would be useful.

[That name again...] You're not completely certain if she's responsible?

Those sparks like electricity? [She'd seen Akiha practicing Soul Menace before but she shook her head.] Fighting magic wasn't exactly my strength back home. I was better at things like protection spells and healing.

Unfortunately. Besides the villagers, no other bodies were found. Considering the effects, it would be unwise to remain around the testing ground. [Lily, do not start defending Medusa.]

I see... It wouldn't do much, but it would be able to hold off Kishin egg attacks.

Bodies? As in corpses? [There's a frown. Just what happened in Chile anyway?]

I didn't exactly make a habit of exorcising demons back home. I only had to deal with a couple after I moved to San Francisco.

Yes. [She wouldn't say that otherwise.]

I see. Well, defense can be a good offense.

[The frown deepens but she nods at the rest.]

I find it best to just try to keep trouble away when possible, to just avoid a fight in the first place. [She's much more about prevention than taking vengeance.]

If only that was always possible.

[There's running from trouble, but it can always seem to find someone avoiding it.]
