[Open] Hit the Slopes

Description: Skiing! Hot chocolate! Snowball fights! Hiking! Folks of Death City say 'screw the heat' and decide to take a frosty vacation a few states away. COMMENCE MISCHIEF.

The discounted price came at a surprisingly good time. With the temperatures in Nevada climbing and no end in sight, it seems the owners of a Pacific Northwestern lodge took pity on the Meisters and Weapons of Shibusen and offered them a break from the heat. Despite it being July, the snow was still plentiful for skiing, snowboarding, sledding and innertubing! Dress warm, rent some gear or bring your own and have at it, they say!

From dawn to dusk, the mountain is lively on all sides, boarders and ski nuts to ski newbies enjoying a mid-week break while nature buffs take hikes over the trails on the greener side of the mountain, reachable by a short bus ride from the main lodge. Whether you're more into the powdery white or the vivid green, there's a spot for you to take a breather on Mount Hood.

The question is, where do you even start?

The snow was perfect, fresh powder covering half the mountain. As it's mid-week, only the die-hards are on the slopes right now, which means plenty of space for newcomers to learn and the more experienced to cut loose! Gear up, goggles on, and take a ride on the ski lift. Just don't look down- the experience is rarely a fun one for the ones who are spooked by heights. Conditions are perfect for settling any scores you might have with your rivals- what better way to trounce your enemies than with a skiing race? Maybe some inspirationally cheesy 80's music will play for you and you'll get the girl. Or boy.

The trails are mostly empty, well-tread winding paths through the greener side of the mountain. Look hard and you might catch sight of wild rabbits and deer if you're bored of the birdsong in the evergreen forests, but do keep your eyes peeled for subtle markers of ribbons and spray paint on the occasional tree. The trails are for you to explore, but take care not to stray too far and get lost! Or do, and become a crazed mountain hermit.

The lodge is massive, yet warm and cozy on the inside. Filled to the brim with rooms bearing single beds, doubles and bunk beds, visitors are invited to stay the night or at the very least gather around the hearth, where a fire is always crackling. Hit up the café for coffee, tea or hot chocolate and grump about how cold you are, or spend time with friends and loved ones! Extra marshmallows boosts resonance, you know. If you look outside, you'll see the occasional group of people engaging in a fierce snowball fight. It's recommended you stay inside until the battle is over... unless of course you think you can turn the tides or decide to call a fight of your own.

[How the hell had someone talked Akiha into trying to ski? She'd never been skiing before - mostly because she hated the cold and skiing required her to be out in the cold. But there she was, at the top of the slopes, staring down, and clearly NOT making an attempt to careen down it.]

[Now this is more like it. Drinking hot tea by the fire and twirling the silly bird charm that had been foisted upon her, Akiha looks in a much better mood. She might not even mind if someone comes by. Well, the odds are she won't bite their head off if they do.]

[For once something they seem to share. Naoto's having difficulty even starting again. Really, after everything from a year before, one would think she'd have gotten somewhere, but nothing. Instead, she just waited for Kanji to come and help teach again.]

Coming to the snow was enough... [It's almost like she's muttering to herself. How'd she let Kanji talk her into trying this again?]

[At the muttering, Akiha looked over at Naoto... and accidentally shifted her weight when she did so. One ski started to slide forward and, with an undignified flailing, Akiha ended up on her butt in the snow with an equally undignified squeak.]

[Naoto turned her head in Akiha's direction, weight shifting in kind. Skis slipped and she flailed momentarily. At least she had gotten better at not falling. Better, but she was still going to fall down eventually.]

... I'd offer to help, but then neither of us would be standing anytime soon.

I'm sure given enough time, we'll end up running each other over if we ever head down. Whomever decided this was supposed to be fun must be insane.

[With some struggling and stabbing of her poles into the ground, Akiha eventually gets back to her feet, skis pigeon-toed to keep her in place.]

... I will not deny the possibility.

[Though, she had only run into her 'teacher' several times over. This wasn't good; she was a hazard to other people.] I wouldn't have minded a snowball fight compared to this.

A warm fire with a hot cup of tea. It's freezing out.

[Okay, it wasn't that cold, but Akiha hated low temperatures.]

I prefer bundling up than stripping down.

[Death City was becoming unbearable. Thank Shinigami Teddie was not present. Another gust of wind and she shivered.]

It would be wonderful to have some tea now though.

I don't see why. Even with layers on, the cold is still biting.

[Akiha was fond of her air conditioning.]

[Fresh off the ski lift, Minako looks absolutely pumped with her gear and snowboard. So alright, this isn't the beach trip she wanted, but who would turn down snow? In fact, if she was back home, she probably would've seen some by now, so she's definitely excited to see it here. Getting to try something new like snowboarding just made it even better!]

Oh man, this trip is going to be a ton of fun, don't you think? [She asks to whoever might be standing nearby. Come on, JOIN IN THE EXCITEMENT FOR SNOW!!]

[After her adventure of shredding (or spectacularly failing, the jury's still out on that one) it out there, Minako is sitting contently by the fire, a hot chocolate filled with marshmallows not too far from her. She only sips it occasionally though, surprisingly quiet for once, as she concentrates on... Is she actually knitting right now? What kind of old grandma hobby is that I MEAN-- Odd choices in hobbies aside though, has Minako ever been one to turn down conversation and company? Gawk, stare, maybe even be interested, but if she notices you she's bound to say hi anyways.]

Biting perhaps, but it isn't stifling to be outside.

[Barest nip on her face right now, but that could be because she's anxious to get down the hill. What is taking Kanji so long?] I could stand going for a walk later.

[No skis on her feet and not concerned about falling over or getting lost, Naoto's trying to decide which hiking route to take, referring to the resort guide. Both wouldn't be anything too long, but it would soon be time to turn in for the evening IE, stay near or in the lodge. Seems as though she's planning on going alone. Why not hop up and join her?]

[Growing up in Texas, snow wasn’t unheard of but more than a dusting was rare. There was one memorable occasion when a blizzard that blanketed nearby El Paso in two feet of snow left a similar amount in her hometown of Jarod. Eight years old at the time, Lily had built a snowman in her grandmother’s yard, the only time she’d gotten to try out that particular childhood pastime.]

[She couldn’t help remembering and being distracted by the snow when she stepped out a side door of the lodge, dressed in an old wool coat and intending to take a walk. Feeling silly to be doing this at her age—32 if you counted her birthday the week before—she quickly glanced around to see if anyone was watching and then gave in to impulse and crouched down to start piling up snow with gloved hands. Although it didn’t look much like a traditional snowman, about knee high and less rotund than the usual stack of giant snowballs. More like an animal sitting on its haunches. And was that a snout? If someone caught her, she’d likely look a bit sheepish.]

With Tatsumi, I presume? I suppose this would be a good setting for a romantic walk.

Possibly. I'll ask, but if he wants to stay back and talk to the others later, that's fine.

We are here for a couple days. Plenty of time...

[She looks over her shoulder.]

Though if someone who actually know what the hell they're doing on this frozen slope showing up would be appreciated.

[Back inside after building the snow pig, Lily sat in a corner of the lobby, sampling the lodge’s hot chocolate and letting the mug warm her chilled fingers. She hadn’t particularly expected company so it was a surprise when the middle-aged man in the snowflake-patterned sweater approached, loudly and enthusiastically asking how she was enjoying her stay. But she barely had a chance to answer before he plucked something from a bag emblazoned with the resort’s name and offered it to her, saying it was a souvenir to remind her of her trip. She had to scramble a bit to set her drink aside so she could take it.]

Um, thanks…

[A little stuffed hummingbird, cartoony looking and about the right size to hang from a cell phone or bag. It was wearing a tiny ski cap with the lodge’s logo although that looked suspiciously like a later addition to the original design. The bag seemed to be overflowing with them and nearly as soon as she accepted the trinket, the man was pulling out another and calling to a person passing by…]

[ How many times has Sion ended up on her ass/face so far? Like, a billion. Oh wait, it's happening again. Another person here wondering why she even came. ]

Can't you calculate a way down without falling?

Hey Minako-chan! Have you been having fun?

[ Chika has a rather giddy look on her face as she heads over to the other girl, a cup of hot chocolate securely in her hands as she sits down next to the other girl. There's not as many marshmallows as in Minako's, but it's actually pretty close.

It doesn't take her long at all to see what the other girl is doing though. ]

Oh wow! What are you making, Minako-chan?
