For the past few days, the sound of strong winds and sand hitting glass and walls have become the usual background noise. Goggles and scarves and protective gear have become necessary accessories when venturing outside.

The night before, the winds continued to pick up until, early in the morning, the power flickered and died. For the people staying behind the power comes and goes, but a lot of people won't be around to notice.

Not long after the power goes out, the sound of the sandstorm is joined by the blaring of sirens, followed by an announcement about an evacuation. All residences are directed to Shibusen where they will pass through the mirror usually used by mission goers to travel to their destination.

The shelter they find themselves in is a cylindrical room with lots of bunk beds along the wall and seats on the other side. Don't worry, there are a few of these areas connected to each other via open doorways. There's enough room for everyone! Sort of. At the very least, there's enough room for everyone to fit in there even if there aren't quite enough beds for everyone, especially since it's not only the guests who are here.

At least everyone gets a thin blanket so even if you end up on the floor it won't be too cold.

Contempt be damned, Nanami completely ignored it.

"You shouldn't be waiting too long around here, some poor sap with your blood type is bound to kick the bucket sooner rather than later. Maybe you can get someone from that Erinyes group to kindly "donate" a couple of theirs," a particularly vulgar suggestion coming from a girl her age.

"Hmph."

He snorted, sounding far from thrilled with her vulgar suggestion.

"I'm not picky about corneas. But the odds of that happening aren't particularly high. Most of them are in prison right now, and they're being watched pretty closely."

"Well it is a war, so even if it's not Erinyes," she sighed while considering opting for "the quiet game". She'd take a nap but an elevator wasn't exactly the most comfortable place to catch some Z's.

"If I could take Kishin eyes, I probably would," L said thoughtfully. "I even saw one with eyes that looked like mine used to. It almost killed Takuto."

Nope, nothing creepy at all about what he just said.

She scratched her chin, "I suppose most of them would be too large anyway even if they were compatible otherwise. You've gone on missions with Takuto?"

"Just the one," L said, sounding hesitant. Honestly that entire mission was such a nightmare that he didn't particularly like to dwell on it, although it could probably help explain another incident.

"When we were at the party and you saw me kiss him... that was more an inside joke about that mission than anything else."

"Party? Oh you mean... the housewarming party? You kissed... Takuto?" She sounded genuinely confused at his statement as she tried to think back to that party.

"You don't remember?" he asked, sounding surprised and just as genuinely confused. "I suppose you were pretty intoxicated at that point. Perhaps you wouldn't remember."

"Hmmm..." she folded her arms across her chest reaching into the depths of her mind. "I mostly remember things up to the beginning of that weird game tournament but everything is pretty hazy beyond that point—" she shifted gears almost in the middle of the thought, "I don't understand how kissing Takuto would somehow be an inside joke. Why would you even...?"

"He drowned, and resuscitating a drowned person looks a certain way," he shrugged. "He has never quite gotten over it."

She looked over at her elevator mate for a moment not following completely until it finally dawned on her. She cleared her throat with a slightly visible blush not that L could see it, "oh. So you decided to tease him by kissing him? Do you like him?" Because yeah, people normally don't kiss people they don't like or at least that's what Nanami believed.

"No," L replied after a moment's thought. "I don't like him. That being said, I don't hate him. I'm less than indifferent to him, since I wouldn't allow him to die, but... I have no strong feeling toward him, either way."

"I feel that way about a lot of people but I don't go around kissing them as a joke, that seems more like a self punishment to me. Anyhow, I think I vaguely remember something like that happening."

[dead_black_eyes]

"You were so intoxicated, but yes, it did. He was repulsed, I was not. Kisses are only kisses, and it was the fact that it bothered him that was entertaining to me, not the kiss itself, anyway."

"Heh, that's awfully mean spirited of you," it should have sounded like she was reprimanding him but even without seeing her, he could probably hear the smirk from her tone.

"I've never pretended to be a saint," L scoffed. "Everyone's a little bit sadistic, even if they claim otherwise."

"And I won't disagree with you there." She still didn't go around kissing people to make them angry, there were better ways to go about doing so.

"Really? You're not going to try to argue at all? Most people do, if they think they're nice people," L said snidely.

"I never claimed to be nice," she shrugged.

[dead_black_eyes]

"Maybe not. And I can respect that," L said noncommitally. "If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a person who thinks they are entirely different from how they are."

The blond stayed quiet since there were a lot of things currently weighing on her mind relating to knowing and more importantly, not really knowing who she was anymore. She sighed and shifted a little. The power in the building could feel free to give them a little pulse of life any time now...

As if responding to Nanami's thoughts, the elevator gave a lurch as the lights flickered back on.

"Are they...?" he asked, believing that something had changed but needing to double-check.

Nanami's eyes snapped open and with lighting-fast reflexes her arm shot up and she punched the 'open door' button with the side of her fist. The doors slid partially open before the lights flickered off again and the door stuck in place.

"Go go!" Nanami pulled on L's shirt collar attempting to both pull him up and shove him out through the opening first.

He didn't need to be told twice. Though it entertained every fear he'd ever had about getting caught between floors and gruesomely decapitated, he allowed her to shove him, scrambling the rest of the way himself with his possessions in tow.

"Hurry," he snapped, out safe himself and aware that there was a time limit on their window of opportunity.

Nanami chucked her bag through the opening not caring if it hit him or not at this point and dove through after it. With a slow deep breath she brushed herself off and picked her bag off the floor.

"Well. The stairwell it is..." And probably should have been in the first place.
