Nanami was sitting on the couch turning the pages of detective novel when she heard the knocking at door. "It's already four?" She thought to herself glancing over at the clock. The blond hadn't intended to spend the entire afternoon reading but somehow it had happened again. After marking her page, she set the book on the coffee table and made her way to the front door checking through the peep-hole first. One could never be too careful these days especially after the riots and then there was that creep, Zagi.

Even though she could clearly see Bakura she still paused before finally opening the door for him. "Hello, please come in."

"Well I suppose it's good to know where I stand in the grand scheme of things," she replied flatly returning to her food in silence. There were a number of things running through her mind regarding the situation but for now she chose to keep them to herself.

He set his glass down.

"I care about you enough not to lie to you just to gain an advantage." Which was a lie in itself. His pokerface was perfect when he turned his attention towards the food as well.

"I broke up with my former partner."

"I appreciate your honesty, there's nothing worse than someone going out of their way to be nice to someone they don't like for personal gain." She'd just about had enough of that back home.

"Your former partner? Who was that?"

"A clingy self-important Weapon I don't want to talk about." He made a displeased face. "He blamed me for telling the truth, for him thinking that I wasn't telling the truth, for not being who he decided I should have to be, for confusing him, for going on a mission with you..."

He shrugged his shoulders. "In the end I had enough of his constant yammering and ditched him."

Wait, for going on a mission with her? "I thought you weren't in an exclusive partnership?" The idea of being a home-wrecker, or whatever the partnership equivalent was here, was a completely foreign idea to her. Of course with that glowing description of his former partner, Nanami could completely understand why he would dump him.

"I wasn't." He waved his fork to empathize his point before he rammed it into his food with a touch too much force. "He insisted that we shouldn't be partners and always kept looking for a Meister he'd work better with than me. And then he blew up on me for doing what he couldn't just because I'm able to work with compromises."

She flinched as he drove his fork down into the plate. "His loss," she replied simply although she had to wonder. After all, he was certainly getting all worked up over this ex-partner of his. She was surprisingly very astute when it came to how others felt about one another while at the same time being completely oblivious to how others related to her. There was something more to this but she feared for her dishware should she infer any further.

"Yeah." He agreed curtly before concentrating on his food again. Well, this little dinner session wasn't going in the direction he had wanted it to very much at all. This girl probably hadn't heard about the whole being close to work together as a pair rumors and misinterpretations.

...Might as well withdraw early. "When do you need to leave for work?"

There had been a memo posted by Mello she had been directed to within the first day or so of her arrival where one of the questions related to relationships between Meisters and Weapons, however, by now she had forgotten what she had read. Unless someone mentioned something directly to her she tended to ignore its existence.

"Oh um," Nanami glanced over at a clock, "I should be fine if I head out around 5:50." The area she patrolled was just in the next district over. Wanting to confirm something for herself she looked back to him, "I feel like I know a little bit more about you now, is there anything you'd like to ask me?"

He had followed her gaze at the clock and was now giving her a kind of confused look again - it was another case of questions that he usually didn't get asked. Something he wanted to ask her? There wasn't anything, really. At least nothing that could be brought up as some light smalltalk. Bakura had very little interest in people besides himself in general.

After about a minute of awkward silence he just shrugged his shoulders.

"Why do you always braid your hair like that?"

And that's exactly what Nanami was doing, seeing if he had any interest in her other than as a weapon. Not having her brother around made her realize how shallow her relationships with others actually were. It was a sobering realization as she sat there waiting for him to ask her something, anything. Once he asked, she returned a short silence before letting out long but quiet and resigned breath of air.

She put a hand up touching her hair for a moment, "Actually, I have some pretty unruly bangs," it was a little embarrassing to say so.

"Really. I think I'd like to see that at some time. It might look good on you." This time there was no hesitation to his words as Bakura had given up trying to scheme for the moment and just went with saying the first thing that came to his mind.

"I like long hair and people who aren't self-conscious about it."

Nanami stared blankly at him for a moment before her cheeks flushed red. She cleared her throat, obscuring her mouth with a hand. "Well then, maybe one day I'll show you," she spoke from behind her wine glass this time, trying to look nonchalant about it with her eyes closed and feigning a somewhat bored expression.

"I'll be looking forward to it." Ironically enough Bakura found that exchanging blows while bantering came just as natural to him as they did when he was mocking somebody if he just let them. It wasn't about sincerity or what he really thought (although using those definitely made the words he said even stronger) but simply about dominance and power. Who got the other to move the way they wanted won.

"Is there anything personal you want to know about me as well?"

Ah, so he had turned her own question around on her. That was only fair, however she didn't want to hit a sore subject over what was left of dinner so she nixed the idea of asking about his family although that's what she really wanted to know about. "If you had been brought here as a weapon, what form do you think you would have taken?"

"What form?" He looked up at her, looking just a tad bit surprised. "The Ring, of course." He inclined his head a bit to the side, sounding the same way of puzzled that one would react in if one were asked what color the sky were. The Ring had been his alternate body for so long now that it seemed only natural that his soul would have kept being tied to it.

After maybe half a minute, he grinned as he straightened up a bit and lightly shrugged his shoulders. "Or maybe a blade like the ones I used to own or something like that hourglass that I used during the latest game. Being a die like that asshole would've also been an option, although I wholeheartedly doubt that my effects would have been anywhere as nice and passive as that pansies." He chuckled. "But the Ring is still the most likely choice. It's my mobile gravestone, after all."

"The Ring?" That was certainly a quick reply, Nanami had expected him to mull it over even if it was just a minute or so. Wasn't that some sort of horror movie...? "What... what kind of abilities would you have as a ring? Or an hourglass or a die for that matter?" Nanami was not familiar with the ring or the children's card game game items he was talking about.

"The Ring is one of the Millennium Items. It finds, opens and locks paths." As well as it did a couple of other useful things that Bakura wasn't going to mention around her. "The hourglass was a tool used to change the flow of time in the game. As for the die" He held up a finger and wagged it. "the roll of the die decides the fate of those who play."

"Oooh," she made a impressed sound. She was actually surprised to find that he seemed to be describing mostly assisting abilities she had felt he'd have been something a little more vicious with the aura he gave off when they were resonating. He seemed fairly confident so she truly believed he would have become one of he items he had listed. "So you like games then?"

"Like? I guess you could say I do." He seemed amused at the idea.

"The truth is that I don't really know how I feel about them. I mean, I play a lot" he gave her a little shrug to show that it wasn't the way it sounded, "but pretty much all those games where Dark Games. Things that decide whether somebody lives or dies."

He didn't really hit her as the type to do something he didn't want to do for very long. "Everything with you is always so drastic, you sure don't do anything half way do you?"

He chuckles at her question. "I'm from a place and time where doing things half way was a sure way to get yourself killed."

He waved his hand through the air, as if to show that the whole thing wasn't that big in his opinion. "The Dark Magic the Items use works best when applied in a Dark Game. Some of them can even only be won that way, in a contest that pits the soul of one person against another."

She gave him a look that said 'there, you're doing it again with all the dire stuff' besides that game didn't sound fun at all. "Have you thought about taking a vacation?"

Somehow Bakura managed to give her an amazingly dry look without moving a muscle in his face.

"Before or after I was killed and had my soul bound to the Ring?"
