[OPEN] Mission 156
Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.
The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.
The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!
Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.
OOC NOTES.

He stepped back to avoid another punch, then darted to the side to get past the Kishin Egg. Unfortunately, the rock was slippery and not quite as easy to climb as he would have liked.
no subject
At least that would have been the plan if the yeti hadn't decided to pick up a fallen tree and attempt to throw it at them. Raidou! Jump around it!
They'd still land on higher ground and have the advantage. It did not occur to Alucard to wonder why they seemed to be pushed in a particular direction.
no subject
Raidou inhaled sharply. Over the yeti's head, there were human-shaped shadows floating in the air. Watching him. His soul wavelength wavered. No, no this again--
no subject
The blood that flows within these veins is cursed. It would be best for the world if I disappeared forever.
Hearing his own words out loud in the air made him realize they'd fallen into a trap of madness. It's impossible for him to keep his form and Alucard transformed back. He tried to drag Raidou to safety in as much as he was able.
no subject
Stop looking at me like that. I did what you want, isn't that enough? How much more do you want before you are satisfied? More demands, more responsibilities, and it never ever stops--
"Stop looking at me!"
He instantly regretted saying the words out loud. The shadows surrounded him in a blink of an eye and sank their hands inside his chest, seizing his heart in a cold, steely grip. He had had overstepped his boundaries.
Raidou never noticed the Kishin Egg grabbing him. It was just another hand among others.
no subject
Even his tenuous hold began to weaken when by dragging them up, they drew near a treacherous drop. Isn't it time you did everyone else a favor and left this world?
Alucard let go of Raidou's hand and walked toward the edge of the mountain path. The cold wind whipped his long blond hair and he stared into the abyss, feeling it stare back.
no subject
He ceased struggling. What was the point? It didn't matter how hard he tried to help anyone. Rei had been taken away, most likely to her death. Akane was condemned to a fate even worse than death. The Capital was being torn apart before his eyes, the people falling into despair. Alucard wasn't there anymore. They had all depended on him, and he couldn't save any of them.
I should have never become Raidou, he thought as hands closed around him. Yet without that name, he was nothing. He might as well just disappear...
1/?
The thoughts insinuated themselves into Alucard's mind as he stared down the cliff. All he had to do was keep walking.
Except something stopped him. Who had told him about this? Kid told him. I can't offer an answer to your problem but you can resist the Madness by knowing that it only offers a false solution. It will not fix anything.
Alucard ground his boots into the snow and stayed still.
What's wrong Alucard? Walk and end everything. The world will no longer be cursed with you.
I do not wish to be tormented by you, he replied, though it was so difficult to resist the call of this voice.
You will always be tormented by this as long as you exist.
Getting over a piece of madness because of an event or a person was different than getting over a piece of madness because of how you -are-. In the shivering cold on the edge of a cliff, Alucard realized that the only way to truly ignore the siren calls of Madness was to examine the very thing that Madness called him on. Himself.
He should not exist. Vampires cannot have children the way humans can. Yet here he was and he was never told how such a thing was possible. He held the blood of human and damned, turning him into a completely new creature. He had the powers of his father but the feelings and teachings of his mother. By his religion, he should be rightfully cursed. Or not exist.
Except here he was. Why?
I think it's too late for debating the meaning of your existence, Alucard. What have you done that's so important?
Alucard pondered this. If he had not joined Trevor Belmont, would he have been able to destroy his father? Perhaps but they might all have died. Because he did help, everyone lived. Because he joined with Trevor, he learned what it meant to have friends.
If he had not awoken in 1797, Dracula would have surely won again and Richter Belmont would have been lost for all time. That surely was important.
2/?
That...wasn't quite true. He knew key ways into his father's castle that helped Trevor and with Richter being the titular Belmont who could control the whip and had it in his possession, the only person who could have fought through all of the hell to get to him was...Alucard.
Even now, when he wasn't constantly struggling with crippling doubt, he could live his life in this place in time. BREW had chosen him to help in their cause. No longer bound by the conventions of his own culture, Alucard had seen how other people lived in other worlds. People had very different viewpoints.
He met someone who had partnered with him so willingly and was not afraid of him because demons were considered allies and just a natural part of the world. Raidou was his Meister, partner and friend. A person who had his own troubles but was always willing to listen to him.
If he were really that cursed, would God allow him to have such wonderful people in his life?
You...you still have your powers! Even if you leave here, you have powers that could destroy just like your father.
True. That troubling thought might not ever leave him or what he was ultimately supposed to do with his powers, but he could decide that on his own.
You are not supposed to exist! You will not be missed.
In that moment, Alucard recalled the jaws of Amaterasu pulling him back from the top of a building and the utterly panicked expression on Raidou's face. If he had jumped...
JUMP!
I will not.
I'm telling you for your own good!
You do not have my interests at heart at all.
You are damned!
If I jump I surely will be. Right now other things are undecided.
3/3
You are right. But if I am here in spite of anything, the only person that could possibly be responsible for that is...God.
Somehow in all of his brooding and all his long thoughts, he had never entertained such a possibility until forced to think by this Madness.
What?!
If God wants me to be here then I need to be here.
No! The voice became weaker and what was once so compelling now looked so pathetic.
I deserve to exist!
The poisonous grip of Madness on his mind broke and became just an annoying gibbering noise at the edge of his hearing. What had he actually done? Alucard felt something profound change inside him but he did not have time to ponder its ramifications.
A yeti kishin egg reached for Raidou and intended on crushing him.
All of the anger he kept so carefully contained spilled over. Alucard turned around and ran toward the monster. "Ard in iad!" he howled before throwing himself on the beast and ripping its grip away from his Meister.
no subject
Then he hit the ground, sprawled in the snow. He didn't move. He had no more strength left to try.
no subject
"Raidou!" This was bad. Laying in the snow like that could chill him. Alucard grabbed the chain holding his cloak closed and slipped it off him. It would be a perfect size and warm enough for his Meister.
Working quickly, Alucard swept off the snow and tucked Raidou into its depths. Then he picked him Raidou in his arms. "Do not worry, Raidou. I am right here. I will get us to safety. I will not leave you," he whispered into Raidou's ear, hoping he would hear.
no subject
"Alucard-san?" When did he come back? No, that didn't matter. He was there. Not gone.
I will not leave you.
A noise somewhere between a laugh and a sob escaped his throat. Then the Madness became too much and he passed out.
