[OPEN] Mission 156

Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.

The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.

The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!

Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

Her eyes were open, so she was still conscious, but they were glassy and prone to wandering. It didn't look like she understood what he was saying. Kurapika folded the blanket back over her shoulders and laid the back of his hand on her forehead--except his own hands were kind of chilly, and he couldn't tell if her skin was clammy or warm. He pulled it away and waved it right over her eyes.

"Oniisama? No, I said pants--that's right, pants. You have to get out of your wet clothes so you can change into a dry set, and if you don't wake up and take your pants off yourself, I'm going to have to do it for you, and then I'm going to have to let you run me through with your sword, which I definitely do not want."

Feel free to skip stuff, I can time skip next turn, she's going to be pretty much useless for a bit.

Unfortunately for Kurapika, Nanami was once again nodding off. He was going to have to take the gamble. She laid there cold and heavy like a bolder located probably just outside the medical area. Her shivering had started up again and although it was sporadic, it was a good sign.

She wasn't responding. Man, why did he always get himself into these situations... Well, fine, he knew exactly what he needed to do. He'd already removed the girl's boots, so it was an easy matter of unbuckling her belt, popping open the buttons on her pants, and then carefully tugging her trousers off over her feet--all the while keeping the blanket snugly wrapped around her, and tucked tightly under her shoulders, with just one hand fumbling around under there--he was working blind. But at least he couldn't be accused of peeking.

Dressing her in the thick cotton pants he'd retrieved from one of the crates was the more difficult part. Suffice to say, Kurapika was cursing himself under his breath by the time he was finished, but that was done, and he could carry her to the actual cots. He had a second blanket ready, and he draped that over the first one, too. And then he nipped back quickly into the supply tent and got more warm compresses and a thermos of soup.

A half an hour passed before the girl on the cot finally stirred and Nanami sat upright. "... but finding another blow fish that size could take months! Huh?" A couple heated water bottles made interesting sloshing sounds as they tumbled to the floor. She sat for a moment blinking and glancing around the tent wondering where she was and how she got there.

Kurapika had tried to stay with her at first, to see if she'd wake up with some prodding, but she'd remained stubbornly unconscious, and he didn't see how he could rouse her without resorting to rougher treatment. So he'd reluctantly gone back to the supply tent--he still had his other duties to see to, after all--and contented himself with going back and forth a few times just to check up on her.

It was on his fourth such round that he finally found her sitting up. "Oh, good, you're awake!"

The girl had a moment to put two and two together and realize where she was although how she got there was still pretty hazy at this point. "A medical tent?" She quickly checked all appendages to be sure they were all in tact. "Ten..." she glanced under her blanket to be sure all her toes were there when she realized she didn't recognize those pants... She quietly gathered the blanket around herself and without making eye contact said managed to murmur a single "ummmm..."

He was pretty pleased to see her looking much improved, and was perhaps a bit more willfully obtuse to her unease than he normally would be because of it.

"Don't worry, you should be fine now--although I need to check a few things just to be sure," he added cheerfully, and reached out to a nearby table to grab a digital thermometer. The medical tent wasn't that big, and was quite cramped, actually, that he could stretch an arm and get his hands on all the equipment he'd need--Kurapika pressed the ON button, and the device uttered a tiny beep. Then he fitted the nozzle against the girl's ear, and held it in place for the few seconds it would need to get an accurate reading.

Her head jerked uncomfortably when Kurapika touched the thermometer to her ear; she was avoiding looking in his direction so it came as a surprise. The girl was doing her best not to panic what with being in a tent with a strange young guy (she realized he was supposed to be a doctor but she had had the same one since she was a baby so it was a little weird for her) and of course someone changed her out of her pants! Her face might have just gotten hotter but whether or not that would show up on the thermometer remained a mystery especially if she actually had a fever which was likely.
