[OPEN] Mission 156
Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.
The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.
The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!
Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

"You wouldn't happen to know Yamazaki Sagaru, would you?" Rather, the question was really, 'you wouldn't happen to be the Sheena he was going on and on about when they last spoke?'
no subject
Her eyes grew wide as the other woman continued, and she felt herself begin to nod slowly. "Yes. Yes, I know him." We're dating.
no subject
"I thought you might." Despite the situation, Aqua found her smile becoming warmer, "He speaks very fondly of you."
no subject
"Yeah, I know," she said with a shy smile and rubbing the back of her neck. "I like him, too."
no subject
But Aqua tried not to dwell on her own problems. It wasn't that hard; she really was happy for these two.
"Have you told him?"
no subject
Sheena looked down for a moment. If the red in her cheeks wasn't enough of an answer, her softly-spoken "Yeah, I told him" certainly was a good clue that she just might feel a little more than that for him.
no subject
"...I'm glad." Between the war and BREW's penchant to send people back, it was best to not hesitate on these matters. "I hope everything works out for the two of you."
no subject
"Although part of me is afraid to let it happen. Does that sound terrible?"
no subject
"It's a big change and by doing this...you'll be opening your heart to someone in a way that leaves you vulnerable." She brought her hands to her chest. "But it's worth it."
no subject
"I don't like that BREW kidnapped me, but if it hadn't, I wouldn't have met Zaki. And-- I don't want to forget him when I go home."
no subject
She turned to Sheena again with a warm smile, "That's why you need to treasure the time you have now. Because no matter what the outcome is, what you have now...it's a beautiful thing." So beautiful that it broke her heart.
"And I believe that, even if we're sent back, even if we forget, that there's a part of our hearts that will always remember. I believe that love is a light that will never go out."
no subject
She grew silent as she thought about what she was hearing. "I hope so, Aqua. I really never thought I'd find someone--that I'd grow old and die alone, no matter how much I wished otherwise. But now--" She paused and glanced in the direction of her heart. "I never want to forget him."
no subject
That much she was sure of. Whatever happened, she couldn't make herself believe that she would have been better off not having fallen in love.
"When I asked about it before, some people told me they didn't forget when they were returned. So it seems like you don't always forget, either."
no subject
Her expression became one of hesitant joy as she whipped her head around again. "What are you saying? I'll remember him when I'll go home?" It's one thing to lose a person, quite another to forget--and to Sheena, being forgotten was a worse fate. Her smile became one of happiness for the other girl. (The young ninja will probably never overcome her penchant for caring about others.)
"That means it's possible someone's remembering you, right?"
no subject
She had very little left beyond that.
"You might. Some people have said they forget everything, but the fact that some hadn't..." It could mean nothing, but it could also mean a lot more than that.
It was strange though, Aqua had initially meant to bring this up to cheer Sheena up. She hadn't really expected for Sheena to be happy for her sake.
"It's possible."
no subject
"But you know, even if people have forgotten things up here," she tapped the side of her head, "it's always possible they'll remember elsewhere." She tapped her chest in the approximate location of her heart for emphasis. Sure, it would be nice to recall how Zaki looked and sounded if she ever went home, but it was the feelings he gave her that she wanted to cherish forever. "And if I leave, that's where I want to remember Zaki all the time."
She gave Aqua an encouraging smile. "The heart can be an amazing thing, you know."
no subject
"I know." And she wondered, if there was anything where Takasugi had gone that reminded him of what they had. A vague feeling of familiarity, of longing or happiness when his heart was reminded of her.
She hoped so.
She placed a hand on her chest, over her heart. "As long as we don't forget here, our hearts will always be connected."
no subject
A wave of some unnamed emotion washed over Sheena and she placed her hand on Aqua's shoulder. Despite her words, it wasn't jealousy that fueled them. "I want to feel like that with Yamazaki," she said softly.
no subject
That knowledge was what gave her the strength to keep going.
"I'm sure you will." She smiled, "I wouldn't be surprised if you already did."
no subject
Along with one very special one.
Chuckling lightly, Sheena looked away in embarrassment. "I wish I could be as sure as you."
no subject
She sobered up when she looked back towards the mountains, however.
"I should go."
no subject
She also looked towards the mountain before saying wistfully, "Yeah, and I should get back to patrolling."
She turned to Aqua and smiled. "It was nice meeting you."
