[OPEN] Mission 156
Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.
The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.
The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!
Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

Somehow, the fact that they were close to the witch while being so close to the Emitter was not a comfort.

...right?

She'd moved stealthily through the raging storm. Oh she knew that Kid would be able to sense that she was close, but she was betting on the storm and the thickness of the Madness to throw off his trail. She took every advantage that she could, and slipped around the trio until she was more behind the small group.
If they were perceptive enough, they might have noticed the subtle shift in the ground around them before sharp ice stalagmites erupted up to entomb the trio.
This is apparently what the dice said.
Due to the snow, the Madness, and his own intensified focus on trying to locate the damn witch, he barely noticed the subtle shift of the ground beneath his feet. Even if he had paid more attention, he might it thought it was another avalanche of sort. Those had been occurring rather frequently as well.
However as his instincts were on high alert, his attention was brought back just a moment before the ice broke through the ground. Instantly he jumped up in an attempt to escape the trap, and though he managed to land outside of it, he did not come out unscathed. One of the spikes had grazed his arm, cutting through the fabric of his coat and skin. The mixture of the frigid surface and his own warm blood tricking down, renewed his senses and he quickly tried to find where the source had been, guns held out and ready to fire.

However, once he'd landed and was holding them out, she asked, "You okay?"

After the brief lull of Kid's searching and Liz's question, she decided to comment to Kid. "We should move!" It was bad to idle too long, after all. And the witch could use the added obstacle of the stalagmites she had just formed to her advantage.

"You shouldn't have come here," the Witch said while ignoring the cheerful giggling from Patti. Stepping out into view while the weapon suggested to move, her expression remained devoid of emotion while she observed the trio. It didn't matter to her that Kid would point his guns at her, as she'd be moving to dodge the moment that his fingers tensed on the trigger. Instead she gave them one chance to withdraw before she ended their lives. "Leave now, and I'll allow you to descent the mountain with no further injuries."
[ooc: just a heads up that I'm going on a trip this weekend, so I probably won't be able to reply until your guy's Saturday night (my Sunday)]

Now that she was within his sights, everything that had been troubling him seemed to be pushed into the back. There was only one thing on his mind now.
Destroy this witch.
"As Shinigami, I will now render your judgment which is only one thing." His eyes narrowed. "Execution."
And with that, despite the snow and conditions he immediately ran toward her. The battle had begun.

Regardless, the thrill of battle was starting to seep in through Kid's words, and Patti grinned to herself. This was going to be good.

She stood there patiently even when Kid called out for her judgement to be execution. Watching impassively as the trio began darting in towards her, there was no sense of urgency in her actions as she almost seemed to casually leap out to the right to avoid the incoming judgement.
Chanting softly beneath her breath as she sailed through the air, a volley of ice shards formed in the air around her moments before they hurled towards Kid's location. Her feet touched against the ground, but the Witch was kicking off again as it was her time to charge the small group.

The moment the shards flew toward him, he quickened his steps, timing them and moving so that he evaded them, even firing a few shots to deflect those that were a little too close for comfort.
Once he was clear he raised his arms to start his own assault, aiming at the witch with the Madness Emitter towering high in the background—
The world started to twist and warp around him, an overwhelming wave of fear and tear slamming into him and gripped his soul as he saw Asura sitting atop that emitter, smiling down upon him and holding a mask—
Kid staggered to halt, almost falling as he snapped back to reality. Except it was too late to realize he had drifted from his course and was no longer directly facing the witch.

This was Not Good, and it definitely deserved capital letters. They were in the middle of nowhere, close to one of those stupid emitters, and now Kid's freaking out on them.
no subject
There was no time to switch, and this was not even the place for it. Still, being near the emitters was proving to be a problem for Kid. She had to wonder if there was any way for her or her sister to help him stay focused and keep it together.

The Witch was moving the instant Kid's mind drifted off. Moving in a blink of an eye, she cackled when the she appeared behind the trio. One arm snapped out to snake around Kid's throat tightly, while the other pressed against Kid's back.
"You're making this so easy," she murmured against his ear while a large ice spike formed in her hand to rapidly extend towards the Shinigami's midsection.
no subject
That was the first thing out of his mouth followed by the sickening half strangled sound that came from somewhere in his throat.
The warnings had come too late and his own reactions had been slowed. The witch had him before he could even move let alone think. He only had time to register that she was behind him before he heard the words and felt the spike pierce through his body. He had suffered extensive injuries before and while this could have easily killed a normal human, he was a god. A shinigami. He could recover—would recover. But this was by no means an injury that would heal within the next instant. No, this was going to take a little longer, his blood flowing freely out from the wound.

"Kid!"
This was not happening. This could not be happening...!
