[OPEN] Mission 156
Characters: Open to participants who signed up here.
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Rating: Various.
Time: March 27th, late morning.
Description: The second of the three Madness emitters outside Death City is the target for this mission. Bundle up, everyone -- it's gonna be a cold one.
The mission begins late in the morning, to allow the mission-goers as much sunlight as possible in the warmest part of the day. Not that it'll help much… Temperatures are well below freezing already -- unnatural even for early Spring in the mountains -- and a howling snowstorm threatens to blot out the sun, beginning up the mountain where the slope just begins to rise sharply.
The slopes themselves are fairly barren: a windswept-looking tree here, a cabin that may have once belonged to the snow patrol there, maybe a Madness-crazed bear or mountain lion. Those braving the storm are lucky enough to see five feet in front of their face in these conditions!
Those brave few who manage to make it to the top (enduring falling temperatures and defeating the corrupted fauna and hulking kishin yeti along the way) may come across their goal at the very summit of the half-mile-high mountain: the Madness emitter itself, in the eye of the storm… And one last obstacle: the Witch guarding it.

[Cloud/Sephiroth | Towards the summit | Closed]
"Cloud," the ex-General ground out, calling for his Meister to prevent what they both knew was coming. He couldn't afford to put Cloud into any danger, now with the threats that surrounded them.
no subject
Yet, it was Sephiroth call of his name that alerted him to real danger. He hopped, jumped and slid his way immediately to his partner, feeling the shifting change inside of Sephiroth that indicated madness was thick. Reaching out, he gently took the silver-haired man's wrist in hand and stepped in close as he held his katana to one side as he protected them both until Sephiroth was able to settle again. "It's alright. I'm here with you," he murmured comfortingly.
no subject
Yet there was a hand around his wrist, and that madness within his mind began to subside. It took time as he broke away from the monster clawing within, and as he heard those soft words murmured to him, Sephiroth felt his mind return to him.
"Cloud," Sephiroth quietly muttered, the wing against his shoulder relaxing as he turned his face away in shame. He had once again become the instrument to Cloud's destruction with no way to prevent such an outcome.
no subject
"None of that now," he called to his partner, tilting his head a little. "You made it much further into the madness than last time. This is good; it's progress and you have to give yourself that," he said confidently as he sheathed his sword across his back. With his hand free, he caressed the feathers of Sephiroth's wing. "Give it time. You're defending yourself better and better every mission we do."
no subject
He could feel the fingers brushing against the dark plumes, before he nodded his head. "There are still moments where I feel myself slipping," Sephiroth admitted quietly before turning his gaze up towards the summit beyond Cloud. "We should focus on this mission." It wasn't a dismissal, but more because he wanted to make sure that Cloud remained safe.
no subject
"Those moments are few and far between now," he replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "You're too hard on yourself," he added as he tugged lightly on the the wing that hung nearby. He turned his gaze towards the summit as well, flexing his shoulders as he rearranged his scarf on his neck. "We might be first to the top."
no subject
"Perhaps, but I have you to remind me of myself," he quietly murmured before feeling the lingering traces of madness disappear. It caused the barest sigh of relief to slip by his lips, and with a subtle nod, the ex-General began to transform.
Cloud had once again protected him, and he would do the same for his partner.
no subject
He said nothing as he allowed his partner to transform into the Masamune, and he momentarily closed his eyes to align his wavelength with Sephiroth's. It was quite easy to do now, and he felt power singing along his arm at their connection. The Masamune itself sang in his grip, and he hefted the blade easily as he began to trek up the mountain towards the summit.
"Let's mosey," he said mentally to his partner as he ignored the cold. "Do you think we can fight a Witch? Cybele said we were pretty strong."
no subject
The question of the Witch did draw his attention, and he 'peered' up at his partner curiously. 'We have not attempted to for many months, but it could be a possibility,' Sephiroth thoughtfully murmured before he added, 'Are you wanting to hunt one down to test out that theory?'
He would support his partner regardless of what Cloud wanted to do. Sephiroth was confident in their abilities and their partnership, and perhaps they could even cause enough of a distraction to bide some time as well.
no subject
"No, but if we encounter one, I won't back down. Let's not go looking for more trouble than we'll already face." In that way, he knew that he had grown wiser to this world's affairs. He wasn't afraid, but he would complete the mission first and his ego second.
He began to head up the mountain, pushing through the abusive wind and flying snow. His hair, as usual, retained its obnoxious spiking even as he ploughed up the snow drifts, his singing sword still heard above the howl of the wind.
no subject
Huffing subtly in amusement, he would have shaken his head at the mere thought. Sephiroth found himself murmuring instead, "You have grown." He never would have thought that he was the type of person to say such a thing, to make such an observation, but it was something he had spoken from the heart and a truth that needed to be revealed.
no subject
Sephiroth's words caused him to pause, and he felt himself flush with heat of pleasure at the compliment. It was so simple, yet he found that it suited him just fine right now. Coming from Sephiroth, it meant a lot too. "If only I could get a few more inches to go with that maturity."
no subject
"Your size is rather perfect in my mind," Sephiroth said with a hint of a smirk in his tone. His partner was just at that right height for him, after all. Shouldn't that be all that mattered?
no subject
He paused in his ascent at something moving in the blowing snow. It was difficult to see, but no worse than enduring the Northern Crater conditions, and he waited patiently for whatever it was to move closer. It was probably a Kishin egg or a wild animal, since they were getting closer to the top.
no subject
The pause didn't go by unnoticed, and Sephiroth focused his attention outwards as he asked, "You saw something?"
no subject
There was a shift near one of the snow-covered trees, and he forced himself to a better area to see. "Maybe... it could just be the snow, but it seemed... big."
no subject
There might have been a smug feeling coursing through their link before he focused more of his attention on the area around them. 'Things are never that simple,' he lightly murmured before falling silent to observe his surroundings.

"It's a woolly creature with horns. It appears... normal. What's the bet it's actually a soul-eating carnivorous beast?" He drew the Masamune up to shoulder length, assuming Sephiroth's old pose purposefully. "Gaea, how the hell to do keep your arms up like this all the time? It's so uncomfortable." Even while he complained, he moved to slowly approach the creature, hoping to startle it to leave at best.
no subject
'Best to take the beast out either way and save yourself the trouble of finding out,' he offered in return before simply smirking in reply to Cloud's complaint. There was nothing said in return, but the amusement felt was more than enough to inform the blonde of his state in the matter.

"Wait..." he mentally murmured to his partner when the creature simply turned and began to walk along whatever trail it was plowing through the snow. He slowly lowered the Masamune again before he began to head off after the beast. "It could be a trap, but it could lead us to the source as well. There could be a witch... or prisoners."
no subject
Sephiroth didn't bother hiding his displeasure at the thought, even if he murmured instead, 'If you believe it to be the best course of action, then I will support you.'
[ooc: feel free to keep following the yak for another round. It will just be walking for a while (until Sephiroth gets impatient and just tells Cloud to kill it) and I figure that it will save us a little bit of time :) ]
no subject
"We are strong enough to be able to handle most things. I want to see if this is worthwhile." He pushed through the snow after the yak, finding it difficult in the blowing snow to keep track of the creature. He pushed on though, following tracks and the vague outline ahead of him.
