[OPEN] Mission 155
Characters: Open to those who signed up here.
Location: An unmarked cavern system outside Death City.
Rating: Various.
Time: March 18th, sunrise.
Description: Shibusen agents brave underwater caverns to take out the first of three Madness emitters.
Missiongoers pile out of the mirrors early in the morning, just as the first hints of sun start to color the walls of the sandstone canyon red and purple; it'll be the last bits of real light they'll see for at least a few hours. The atmosphere is electric -- there're quite a few new (and old) arrivals who're eager to see some action, but just as many people who're feeling rather more apprehensive… And for good reason.
The only way to their destination is blocked by a few hundred yards of sunken tunnels. Luckily they've been provided with mouthpieces, breathing apparatuses with enough oxygen to last about ten minutes: more than enough time, provided that the guests don't lose their way in the dimly-lit, twisted caverns. It's as easy as following the person in front of them, right?
Upon emerging safely from the pool onto mostly-dry land, they'll find themselves in an immense cavern, illuminated by countless, blue fungi clinging to the walls and ceiling, looking like stars dotting a night sky. Already the first signs of the way Madness has been corrupting the wildlife are evident: the mushrooms exude strange spores that make some people's head pound the same way the increasingly noticeable Madness wavelength does.
As they travel further into the watery caves and explore its many branches, they'll begin to encounter creatures twisted by Madness: moles, snakes, beetles, centipedes, all grown to monstrous proportions, some with a venomous bite that quickly turns their victim feverish and delirious. The more daring fighters can easily dispatch those and delve even deeper, and it's near the source of the Madness, in the chamber housing the emitter itself, that they'll encounter the kishin eggs.
There're dozens of them-- eyeless, white, vaguely human-shaped things, but despite their blindness they have no problem finding their quarry, fighting with claws and exuding their own Madness wavelength. If the missiongoers can stand strong against the kishin eggs and the ever-present wavelength given off by the Madness emitter, Shibusen's specialists will have enough time to shut the machine down for good.
OOC NOTES.

All his senses feel heightened, too; if that happened before, he was too shitfaced or too exhausted to notice. It's as if every irrelevant thought that clutters his mind sometimes has been blown away, and he can feel the moisture in the air, heavy against his skin, can feel the almost-subliminal buzz of the madness wavelength growing steadily stronger.
They're getting close; there are rustles of movement in the dimness ahead. The first thing Mello sees approach is a huge mole. He finishes the four sides, unconsciously gripping the cube tighter.]
Right, let's kick some arse.
no subject
He knows it's very far from actually fighting a kishin egg, though.
Near feels the way his partner grips him tighter, and it strikes him as comforting, in a way, almost as if Mello was close to his human body. He tries not to let this thought pass on to their resonance, but he did let his walls down, and he isn't planning on putting them back again until they're safely back in Death City.
There is something else he doesn't want to share, though, but this tiny little detail is even harder to hide inside the deep recesses of his mind: Near has grown too accustomed to the warmth of their resonance, to the point of craving it on occasion when he's in his human body. This thought can be a very big source of distractions right now, though, so Near tries his best not to focus on it-- most of all, he tries to keep that information away from Mello's mind, so his partner won't focus on things he definitely shouldn't focus on during a mission.]
no subject
He can tell from this first attack that they're stronger than ever; the mole he's targeting doesn't stand a chance. Fuck yeah, Mello thinks, but there's little time to gloat, with more creatures creeping or oozing out of the darkness. Some of them are so altered by the madness that they barely resemble anything he's seen before.]
Keep it up, [he tells Near, unnecessarily, he's sure, and adjusts his aim towards a monstrous centipede, taking a few steps closer to where they're all coming from--cut them off at the source, fewer to deal with.
The madness is definitely stronger now, more like a wind buffeting them than a buzz. Mello can feel it eating at the edges of his consciousness, but so far, their resonance is keeping him anchored.]
All right?
no subject
Predictably enough, his partner gloats at how strong they are right now, and Near would've raised an eyebrow in faint amusement if only a Rubik's Cube had any eyebrows at all. Instead, he makes sure that his feelings on this are clear through their resonance: he really doesn't want Mello to get too immersed in his gloating and lose track of reality, or get dangerously cocky and jeopardize this mission.
His next words are indeed unnecessary: Near plans on keeping things working for as long as he possibly can, after all, but he's sure his partner knows this. The Weapon focuses enough on letting the laser attack flow freely, pleased that such power isn't sapping his energy away like it would've done with a weaker resonance. He is equally pleased by how the madness feels more distant, muffled almost, like a deafening song becoming little more than an annoying bass line.]
Yeah. You?
no subject
[Surprisingly so. Mello feels like he could keep going for hours, and take out anything this mission can throw at them, like the first time they resonated, when the force of the blast wave they generated together blew his hair back.
He feels Near's amusement--typical--and has to retort.]
I'm allowed to enjoy this.
[It gets darker as he takes them farther into the network of caverns, starting to seem as though the madness is taking visible form, black oozing into the periphery of Mello's vision from the left. His concentration falters, and he swings the cube around only just in time to drive back a huge beetle that's getting way too close.]
I can't-- it's getting hard to see.
no subject
I never said you weren't. Just stay focused.
[As they get deeper into the caverns, Near has some trouble sensing his surroundings, too, and the madness only makes it harder. He can tell it's affecting Mello as well, despite how powerful their resonance is right now, and he knows he has to act now to prevent terrible consequences: he has to anchor Mello before the madness shakes their bond hard enough to rattle them and endanger their lives.]
That's the madness speaking, Mello. Focus on our resonance and you will be able to see more clearly.
no subject
[It's getting worse, and it's hard to believe what Near's telling him--which Mello knows is true--when it contradicts the evidence of his own senses. There's a roaring in his left ear, like the darkness made audible, and there's no pain, not yet, but he feels as if he's disintegrating.]
Can't you feel it too?
no subject
This is what makes it possible for Near to finally understand how the madness wavelength affects his Meister, and not just how much; he feels that roaring as if he were experiencing it himself, like a weird dream where he inhabits someone else's body instead of his own.]
You can't trust your senses right now, but you can trust me, and you can trust our resonance. We've done this before, you just have to focus.
no subject
He hopes it'll do that now, and he reaches for Near's mind with his own, finds the thread of their connection he almost lost. It's steadying, like it's supposed to be, still working despite everything, and knowing that helps almost as much as Near's words. We're stronger than the madness, he thinks, and knows it hasn't always been true. The darkness doesn't fade all at once, but it starts to dissipate, and to feel less overwhelming.]
Okay. I think I'm all right.
You'll have to be my eyes for a minute more.
no subject
He hears his thought, too, and Near hopes that the blond can keep on believing it when the madness truly gets stronger and they have to fight it to the very limits of their resonance.
Hoping to make this easier for Mello, the Weapon visualizes the scenario in front of him, thinking in numbers: closest creature at an angle of 60º to Mello's right, getting closer at an approximate speed of 25 centimeters per second, and Near does all the necessary calculations inside his head, to get his partner to see without actually seeing.]
Is it working?
no subject
Yes.
[That's all he has the concentration to spare for; he's focused on letting Near's words draw a mental picture of their surroundings for him. Some of the warmth of their resonance is starting to come back, the connection getting less staticky. Mello takes aim, trusting Near's calculations.]
All right, take it out.
no subject
Lower my Weapon form by three centimetres and move your arm 10º to your left. We need to finish it off before another creature comes along.
no subject
He notices with relief that he can see the eerie glow off the cavern walls once more.]
Ready to go deeper in?
no subject
He knows the madness is only going to get worse, and he knows how difficult it will be to pull his Meister back. But their resonance is strong enough to make anchoring his partner possible... right?]
Yes. You?
no subject
[But he hesitates for an instant before continuing on, taking a deep mental breath and quickly taking stock. His vision's fine again, and he feels the same sense of renewed energy Near does, like a second wind.
He knows he's going to need their resonance at its best to withstand the next onslaught of madness, so he does what he can to make sure all the walls in his mind are down, and to hell with how much it reveals. Embarrassment's secondary to survival.]
