The scouts had done their jobs well and the mirror deposits its travelers just at the end of the area Shibusen has closed off as their mission target. It's still dawn, the sun barely visible over the horizon. The witches hasn't noticed them there yet, the scouts say, so it's still possible to take them by surprise.

This is what the agents are told: In the rock face of the Grand Canyon is a cavern system made up of many small caves and three large ones. The large caves contain a kishin egg pit, the kidnapped agents and civilians, and what appears to be a machine at one end. There are about five dozen zombies crawling the area, and an equal number of ants, spiders, and ravens on top of it.

Worst of all, the scouts report that they had sighted a few of the agents patrolling for the Witches. The scouts hadn't been certain if these ones had soul perception or other abilities, and had given the area as much space as they could in order to avoid an early confrontation. Still, it's bad news and it looks like a fight with some of the kidnappees themselves is inevitable.

Not much time is given to the agents after the briefing before they're being ushered into place. A few scouts are going to be causing a commotion some distance away to distract the familiars and zombies, clearing a path for the agents. After that, it's all up to them.

Genesis surveyed their surroundings. He wasn't all that surprised. Most of these missions that had involved the witches were always in some kind of barren wasteland. Now, the goal of the game was to prioritize saving the taken hostages-- and the one Edgeworth had wanted to pursue was Raidou Kuzunoha. In truth, Genesis had no idea who the man was, so he had to rely on Edgeworth for that information.

For now, the priority was to make sure that they will be able to get through this alive. After all, he had Sakuya to return to in Death City. And he wanted this partnership to work.

Genesis approached the other man, clapping him on the shoulder with a red-gloved hand.

"Are you ready?"

At first glance, Miles looked like he was surveying their surroundings as well. In truth, he was thinking - thinking about Franziska and how others had already been assigned to save her, thinking about Raidou and how he had saved the prosecutor from capture, thinking about everyone else who had been kidnapped, and finally, thinking about how he had decided to join the mission and partner with Genesis...

He snapped out of his thoughts and blinked as Genesis clapped him on the shoulder. Then he turned to look at the man who would be his Weapon for this mission, and who may be his next Weapon, period.

"Yes." A nod, and an almost unreadable expression emphasized that answer.

"You seemed to have something on your mind," Genesis sat down beside him, believing that they still have a little time before heading into the caves to commence the mission.

"Did you want to get anything off your chest before we begin?"

He was about to open his mouth to protest, but he decided against it and sighed, brushing a stray strand of hair out of his eyes. Then he drew his blazer more closely around himself before looking ahead again.

"Many of my colleagues and acquaintances have been captured...as well as my sister." His voice had an edge of worry and frustration to it. "I...I cannot allow the witches' plans to succeed."

"Your sister?" Genesis drew back in surprise. It was a rare occurrence, he believed, that family members could be drawn in by BREW. He frowned then, seeing just how much the mission meant to his partner.

He pats his shoulder once.

"Not to worry. I'm with you. And I'll make sure we'll succeed at this."

"Yes." If only Genesis knew how many family members his Meister had to deal with. Franziska was only one of them; he had also faced her father, who was also their mentor, as well as his biological father.

And though another team had already been set to save her, Miles was still determined to do his part, especially for the detective who had been captured in his place.

He turned to face Genesis and let out a breath. "Thank you. And I will do my part as your Meister."

"I have faith in you, Edgeworth."

They were big words for a budding partnership that wasn't even official yet, but Genesis knew that if they trusted each other more on such a crucial mission, the chances of their success could rise. But aside from tactics, he wanted to truly have faith in the other man and make this partnership work.

"I..."

Those were indeed big words from a Weapon he had only started to work with, but it did lift his spirits a little to know that Genesis was willing to cooperate. He couldn't help but...smile a bit. The corners of his mouth moved up.

"I have faith in your abilities as well," he managed to say softly.

"Good."

If this mission turned out to be a success, Genesis may might as well have his new permanent partner... and hopefully, this partnership could be for good.

"We should head out now. We're bound to meet with the other search team later where your colleague is. Hopefully we can both get there simultaneously."

"Of course." He held his head up a little higher, and stood straighter, prepared to put this partnership to the ultimate test. Then he scanned their surroundings, trying to pinpoint the other Meisters and Weapons within the vicinity. "Have they gone ahead of us?"

"Some have. Come on. We shouldn't be left behind."

With a smug smile, Genesis stepped forward and gestured for his partner to join him in venturing out on the rescue.

He agreed - and showed his agreement by stepping forward as well. Tentatively he held out his right hand.

"Will you transform now, or when we enter the caverns?"

"It'll be a much better idea to wait until we encounter a foe. Carrying me around might wear you out before we get to your colleague."

Genesis simply smiled at the outstretched hand and gestured for it to be put away.

"Not to worry, I can take down most smaller foes on my own. Just leave the fighting to me. We'll need your logic to get through the caves."

"Ah, yes. Good point." He nodded in agreement, and withdrew his hand. "Even if you wish to handle the fighting, I can still lend you a hand." The prosecutor was not a skilled fighter, but he had been trained enough to know how to defend himself, and his Meister ability had saved him quite a few times.

Of course, that didn't mean he minded being the navigator. Brain work had always been one of his strongest points, an advantage he was still learning how to use in combat.

Genesis nods then.

"Lead the way. I've got your back."

Miles had listened carefully when the agents had been briefed on navigating the caves. Instead of completely relying on his memory, he had taken notes, which he had studied not long after.

So he walked on toward the entrance, only glancing briefly over his shoulder to make sure Genesis was really at his back.

As Genesis wasn't really the note-taking type, he admired how his partner had the natural ability to study and keep things in mind. He supposed then that this partnership wasn't so random and haphazard after all. He had the sharpness of mind, and Genesis had the strength of body to back him up.

No matter how many times Miles looks, Genesis was always close behind him.

"We should look for the larger caves if we are to find Detective Kuzunoha and the others," he said, more to himself than to Genesis - although not so softly that the Weapon would not be able to hear it clearly. Somehow he found a little comfort in bringing out his notes, stopping for a moment to scan them.
