[Event] Invasion!

Description: Witches have invaded and are attacking the city!

The attack, when it comes, happens quickly enough that Death City would have been caught flat-footed had there been no prior warning, but it's not completely unexpected because of the city's heightened state of alarm the past day. Warning sirens start sounding to alert the citizens and guests the moment a dark, slow-moving mass out in the desert to the south-east of Death City is spotted by Shibusen sentries. There's even time for civilians to run and hide before the mass is identified as an army of what looks like decaying, shambling corpses. The city's defenders are slow to move, however; most of them are distracted and are having trouble dealing with the black blood in their bodies. While agents are gathering to head out to deal with the zombie threat, that's when the witches make their move.

Portals begin opening in the skies above the city, disgorging hideous familiars: bulbous spiders and leggy ants the size of dogs. They drop hundreds of feet down into the streets and alleyways of Death City, and scuttle off in search of victims. The spiders are poisonous and can spin copious amounts of web to capture their targets, the ants spit acid that cause agonizing, paralyzing pain. Their masters bear down on the city in a cloud of black shadows--massive ravens strong enough to carry off adult men. There are five witches, women on broomsticks, beautiful if not for their crazed grins and obvious glee at the chaos descending upon the city. At some unknown signal--maybe the cackling from a couple of them--they dive in concert and disappear into different areas of the city.

Their masterful plan has begun!

I figure calling you Miss with respect shows I have a personal interest in you. If it was just plain "hey you, given name" it sounds like I'm looking down on you.

[For a moment, Ling actually looks genuinely troubled and sad. It shows in his eyes and the lines around his mouth.]

I don't want to treat people like they're my inferiors.

In my culture, that's exactly what you're doing. Only teachers call me that. And butlers, but then we've got the opposite problem.

[Lili watches him, and catches the look, so she smiles wider in an attempt to cheer him up.]

Besides, my given name is Emilie.

Ah, is that so? Gosh, again it's backwards, isn't it.

"Emilie." [Ling pronounces this poetically, like he's musing over how to put it into context in a sonnet. At the same time, he kicks a spider's face in. It's a prince thing.]

What a beautiful name that is.... it's rather soft and musical, isn't it? What does it mean?

[Lili eyes him warily. There's a reason she doesn't use that name, and this is why. Talking to her like that, all sweet and dream-like, isn't his place.]

It doesn't matter. It was my grandmother's name, it isn't mine. Lili.

I was about to ask which you preferred. You've just answered it for me... Lili.

[God, he feels like a pompous ass throwing out the respectful honorific. But, you know that they say. "When in Drachma..."]

Thank you, Ling.

[Her voice is gentle and friendly, but with a warm confidence, all of which seems a bit out of place considering the chaos that was ravaging the city. Still, it's important to her to speak properly. Especially names. Names are important.]

Doesn't it sound nice without all the fluff?

It does! Emilie doesn't sound strong enough to suit you well. I think Lili is better. It's still beautiful, but it's more to-the-point!

Aha? You mean I was finally able to do something right?

[He snickers and dispatches a spider before it can grab for her]

I'll mark it down on my calendar! Maybe one day it'll be a National Holiday.

Didn't I tell you that most people don't get lessons on how to impress girls? I've already given you one, now it's time to fend for yourself.

Oh, I didn't realize that I was supposed to try and keep impressing you! Very well then.... I'd like to congratulate you on a smashing job of taking out these ants and spiders. I'm quite in awe, and I would've been in a pickle if you hadn't been here. Thanks!

[Okay, Ling has never really thought about a girl having nice legs in the sense that they're sexy. He's 16 and it just... hasn't really occurred to him because girls where he's from always have them covered up. He just thinks it's great to for a girl to kick well.]

I think so! Kicking is more useful than punching in the kind of fights I'm used to with Xingese adversaries. You want to keep assassins away from you, having long legs is key. I guess we're pretty lucky that way, huh?

[Lili laughs. He's not even feigning innocence, he's just naturally clueless, isn't he?]

[He beams, thoroughly happy to think that he's made her laugh with his kind compliment.]

It looks like we've cleaned these bugs up here. Shall we... run off into the sunset and find some more to exterminate? I could use your legs to cover my back!

Off into the sunset?

Sure! Like in all the good books. It's for dramatic effect.

Doesn't matter that the sun isn't setting. Just go with it.

I would love to, but I think someone might be looking for me.

Aha! Well, you better go find them right away. If I were looking for someone [And he was] I'd be terribly worried them right now. If they see you, they'll be relieved!

I hope so. [He's right, though, she really should get going. Lili gives him a quick peck on the cheek and heads off in the opposite direction.] Be careful, Ling!

[Ling thinks it's an attack, and tries to dodge it instinctively. You aren't raised to defend against assassins by letting people get in your personal space. His hands flash up to defend but... she caught the edge of his cheek anyway it appears.]
